The question at hand is, where did the original substance come from? It had to come from somewhere. It couldn't just be. I very much enjoyed this video. While I disagree with what Red's point is, he is very well spoken and eloquent. His national pride is moving, and even though he offers nothing beyond the pathos of his speech as an argument, it is still effective. Still, though, speaking as someone who is agnostic, I felt personally offended and uncomfortable in school when I was required to say the Pledge, and wish someone would consider views like mine when thinking about this.

The USA has democratic elections, it passes laws by majority vote. Even the constitution has been ammended by majority vote. The form of government in the USA is called a representative democracy, get used to it. I'd like to see what kind of rule you would expect if you stopped being a democracy.

For the most part this is lovely, but I must disagree with Mr. Skelton. Mr. Skelton thinks it would be a shame if 'under God' were removed because some might consider it a prayer -- what if it said "Under Buddha" ? I suspect that many people would demand that phrase be removed. The purpose of the Constitution is to protect the rights of the minority from the tyranny of the majority. Just because the majority may believe in god does not mean it should be forced on the rest of us.

The Declaration of Independence, while an important document in our nation's history, does not govern the United States. There are no laws in the Declaration, it's a statement of why we broke away from England. No one checks to see if a law is Declarational.
They do, check laws to see if they are constitutional. The Constitution is what we use to govern these United States. The words god, creator and Jesus appear nowhere in that document. What the Constitution does do, is limit government involvement in religion. The 1st amendment says: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof. Simply put: Congress has to keep it's nose out of religion.
Article IV limits religious involvement in the government: no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States

One could argue quite the opposite. If they were so willing to mention god in the Declaration, why did they conspicuously leave god out of the constitution if it was not intentional ?

I very much enjoyed this video. While I disagree with what Red's point is, he is very well spoken and eloquent. His national pride is moving, and even though he offers nothing beyond the pathos of his speech as an argument, it is still effective. Still, though, speaking as someone who is agnostic, I felt personally offended and uncomfortable in school when I was required to say the Pledge, and wish someone would consider views like mine when thinking about this.

@texcaldel What type of country are you talking about? The UK is a constitutional monarchy, but its just as democratic and free as the US. Most European countries are in fact republics, so I'm not sure what you mean by "democracies" where " the ruling class can do what ever they want regardless of the outcome".
The only places this would be that I can think of are places like Iran and China - but we all know these are not democracies in any practical sense of the word.

I live in the Czech Republic, and we are also a democratic republic, like the US - with free elections and a pretty well functioning democratic system all round (freedom of press/speach, market capitalism, civic action). We didn't use to be - we used to be part of the USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics) i.e. *non* democratic - My point is that being a republic or not has nothing to do with how democratic a country is or how free.

Pres James Madision may have best pointed out the difference when he said the difference between a democracy and a republic is that a democracy becomes weaker as it get's larger because of violent factions. The USA has democratic elections, it passes laws by majority vote. Even the constitution has been ammended by majority vote. The form of government in the USA is called a representative democracy, get used to it. I'd like to see what kind of rule you would expect if you stopped being a democracy.

And HOW would taking a handful of words out of a pledge and off of currency be worse for us??? Religious people love to say it'd have bad consequences, but never say HOW. I'm not exactly a religious man, never have been, never will. I once told a woman who told me that I'm going to hell due to my agnostic beliefs, 'only those who wish others to hell go to hell.'
Still, I believe that we should keep Under God, in the Pledge of Allegiance. It's a part of our national history, they were added when Alaska and Hawaii were added to our great USA. Somethings... need a little reminder every now and then, this is one of those times.

For the most part this is lovely, but I must disagree with Mr. Skelton. Mr. Skelton thinks it would be a shame if 'under God' were removed because some might consider it a prayer -- what if it said "Under Buddha" ? I suspect that many people would demand that phrase be removed. The purpose of the Constitution is to protect the rights of the minority from the tyranny of the majority. Just because the majority may believe in god does not mean it should be forced on the rest of us.

And all our fore fathers believed in a greater power and put God into our constitution as "our creator". Some were Deists, but they still believed in a higher power. Political correctness is overrated and it infringes on our right to free speech. If the majority votes on something it should be so.

The Declaration of Independence, while an important document in our nation's history, does not govern the United States. There are no laws in the Declaration, it's a statement of why we broke away from England. No one checks to see if a law is Declarational.

They do, check laws to see if they are constitutional. The Constitution is what we use to govern these United States. The words god, creator and Jesus appear nowhere in that document. What the Constitution does do, is limit government involvement in religion. The 1st amendment says: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof. Simply put: Congress has to keep it's nose out of religion.

So, while your quote from the Declaration of Independence may lend credence to your statement that the founders believed in a higher power, it does nothing to bolster the idea that the founders wanted religion involved in the government. One could argue quite the opposite. If they were so willing to mention god in the Declaration, why did they conspicuously leave god out of the constitution if it was not intentional ?

I see no harm in removing "under god" from our pledge or "in god we trust" from our money. Everything in this world is subject to change with the times, hopefully change for the better. I see religion is at the center of so much hatred so I see the removal of god from our government as a good thing.There are many Atheist & Agnostics who feel the same loyality to America as those who believe in god.

Except that I have read the Bible and I haven't seen Communism in it once. The Bible teaches of a perfect triumvirate monarchy that is God. Next, the universe is deterministic according to scientist that do not believe in a creator. We know that a creator of something (lets say a game designer) can go in and edit things to their own liking so events go the way they are supposed to.

Insults shut people off, like you have do to me. Now on the case of miracles, you can not prove them since they are a once in a lifetime event in history (try putting George Washington in a test tube).
There is evidence for creation. Try human language, natural selection would have cut it off as useless in it's beginning development due to the need for intelligent thoughts to use it.

You require proof that cannot be given. What you want is to see God himself since everything I can tell you, you will disregard. I am not "strongly delusional". Last I heard that was from a certain book called the "God Delusion" which was criticized by atheist because it practiced strong rationalism. I cannot put God in a test tube, you cannot give me irrefutable proof of evolution. I can give you strong evidence, but that is all. The rest is up to you.

Yes the KKK may do that, but that does not negate the truth of the statement. Also, last I checked, the KKK threatened my Great-Grandmother, a devout Christian woman, for helping blacks based on her belief in God. The also burned crosses, ignored what the bible teaches about modern day slavery, and supported murder of others based on the color of their skin. They hardly sound like bible believing Christians.

Do you not know history? Christians have always opposed modern day slavery! The founders did all they could to set the country up so slavery could be abolished.
