  • I wonder if anyone has realized that maybe the founding father of the U.S.A. were trying to shape America to say the same thing. So many people use the excuse that they have the right and never go farther. That's the dead end for them because that's what they believe America was all about. You can be free but if there is no purpose to it then there is no point. To be wise is to try to evolve, try to innovate, try to build a better future, through learning and understanding what to do and why

  • Best conversation in this game! Really deep meaning... Nothing is true; Everything is permitted.

or as Ezio says to Rodrigo: "Nulla è reale, tutto è lecito."

  • Honestly if politicians today understood this cutscene from a damn game there wouldn't be so much ignorance and conservatism.

  • Probably the most truly (how ironic) words I have ever heard. This discussion confrims that. Over 30 and more interprations of one phrase. Find your own truth in that. Because nothing is true. Practically, I would say, no matter how you interprate this, it's always true. But remember, this comment is complete lie.

  • To recognize nothing is true and everything is permitted; that laws arise not from divinity but reason.I understand now that our creed does not command us to be free. It commands us to be wise.

    Should be a movie.

  • @Freikson This game is too big to be made into a movie; a TV series, on the other hand... now that's something I'd like to see :)

  • @DonRMB Forgive me for sounding like an arrogant cunt but you sound like a simpleton when you mentioned it's like The Matrix. Anything but my friend this ain't Kantian thinking. If anything it's more in line with the views of the thinker Friedreich Nietzsche and Dostoyevsky. The philosophy is saying we shouldn't accept perceptions that are taken to be set in a stone. It is fabricated, perceptions create a false sense of the world i.e we accept morals, laws as truth, when it's false.

  • @AMICHIO Huh?...

  • Comment removed

  • if this video had 7 billion views, we would live in a better world =)

  • @DonRMB You take the blue pill and the story ends. You wake in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill and you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit-hole goes.

  • Here is what Ezio says: it is an observation of the nature of reality. To say, 'nothing is true', is to realize that the foundations of society are fragile, and that we must be the shepherds of our own civilization. To say, 'everything is permitted', is to understand that we are the architects of our actions, and that we must live with their consequences, whether glorious or tragic.

  • What song in the soundtrack is playing in the background?

  • To truly understand this play sequence 9 of the newest game assassin's creed revelations. Ezio explains what it means.

  • Background music gives me chills....

  • 40 sec real words at the whole game

  • Did they change Altairs voice in the New Assassin's Creed?

  • @SoulWolf2852 Yes, and I prefer the new one with an accent

  • @SoulWolf285 His voice changes a lot its different in all the games he's in. (Assassin's Creed 1, Assassin's Creed Bloodlines etc.) :P

  • @Airstriker2000 I played all of them, but not the ones from the iPads or PSP,etc.

  • it's just like the matrix

  • That's some heavy shit.

    I love it

  • Can someone please explain this to me!

  • @OhJoNoJo I messaged you what you what I think it means :)

  • @OhJoNoJo You should play ALL the AC games to understand this.

  • Ok so i spent like an hour thinking on this and cant seem to understand it fully. Iv allways felt that i view the world differently that others but not how differently. Can someone explain this to me (but dumb it down so that a 8th grader would understand it)

  • ahhhh yeah Philosophical Anti Realism at it's finest

  • "Nothing is True , Everything is Permitted".. This is the foundation code of religions. You will read the opposite in their books however ; "There is Truth , Restricted to Non Believers" ..So you will believe in their lies to find the truth ..impossible. Whilst the grand masters of religions enjoy the only truth since day 1. "Everything is Permitted , to Find the Only Truth, Power".

  • @dante2217 those books are written by templars XD

  • "Nothing is true. Everything is permitted."... Sounds like reality television!

  • i have this tattooed on the back of my arms :), "nothing is true, everything is permitted"

  • Al Mualim:What is the truth?

Altair:We place faith in ourselves. We see the world the way it really is. And hope that all mankind would see the same.

Al Mualim:What is the world then?

Altair:An illusion; one which either we can submit to, as most do, or transcend.

Al Mualim:What is it to transcend?

Altair:To recognize nothing is true and everything is permitted; that laws arise not from divinity but reason.I understand now that our creed does not command us to be free. It commands us to be wise.

  • This isn't about life in itself, even though you can interpret it that way. Before moving on to the other interpretation:"Nothing is true"means that the"truth",is constantly changing,as it is something of relative nature, and changes throughout perception."Everything is permitted"means our actions aren't and shouldn't be limited. However the second interpretation deals with the manipulating aspect of religion(today's politics).Do not believe what is said to you blindly, and do not act in fear of it.

  • @Vomuseind Religion is Politics.

  • I'd like to know why is it one of your favorite parts?

  • in assassin's creed revelations, at the end when your going to the libary door, Ezio tells what he thinks of "Nothing is True. Everything is Permitted.

  • God I miss this game, Altair is the best.

  • Spoiler for those who havn't played revelations! Altair dies at 92. :D

  • I wonder if you could compare this statement to state of being and state of becoming.

  • guys, the quote isn't some other worldly axiom that must be broken down into glorified meanings, i think that to a lot of people find its meaning confusing, therefor, strongly profound. It's actually quite simple. Just look at it. All its saying is that simply if you value truth, you will find it. Whats true for you is true for you, the universe or spiritual divinity does not create absolutes, you do, as a maker of your own life. Belief in something, alters the reality for you, thus the truth

  • This quote is from a Slovenian book and the storyline of the game is also from a Slovenian book. Proud to be Slovenian. =D

  • actually, the whole assassins creed franchise is based on a book called alamut by vladmir bartol. The book alamut is based off the historic figure named Hassan-i Sabbāh, who in this game, is represented as Al Mualim. The saying "nothing is true everything is permitted" is a well known maxim and has been for many centuries. Please do not base your assumptions or sources off a video game as it sorta makes you look stupid: /

  • To say that nothing is true,is to realize that the foundations of society is fragile, and that we must be the sheperds of our own civilazation.

To say that everything is permitted,is to understand that we are the architects of our actions, and that we must live with their consequences, whether glorious or tragic.

This words are said from Ezio in AC:Revelations

  • @dissasembledriot que someone saying, "famous last words" (fuck you trolls, not you)

  • How many of you in here actually wrote these quotes and others in the series to share with people or to remind you the words of wisdom to support you in the future.AC series really changed the way i view life. Many get inspired by books, some get inspired by a song, some with a film. But for some a video game. But AC is more than just a game or for the sake of art.....its a way of life.

  • @jcamadeus94 Couldn't agree more. I actually live base don that quote now. I found knowledge in it and a way to see life so differently. It's nice to know I'm not alone :)

  • @jcamadeus94 We work in the dark, to serve the light. We are assassins.

  • "Nothing is true, everything is permitted" - In my view, its a statement which defeats itself in order to give a supporting purpose. If nothing is true, then everything we do is permitted since no matter what we do, that which we are permitted to do, in the end, will be nothing. So basically, we are allowed to do anything, but in the end, what we do means nothing. This is why Assassins do what they must, for in the end, all that they've done will mean nothing (I think)

  • “Before you go, I have a question for you.”

    “Of course”

    “What is the truth?”

“We place faith in ourself, we see the world the way it really is and hope that on day all mankind might see the same”

  • “what is the world then?”

“An illusion, one that we can either submit to, as most do, or transcend”

    “What is it to transcend?”

“To recognizance that nothing is true and everything is permitted, that laws arise not for divinity but from reason. I understand now that our creed does not command us to be free, it commands us to be wise”

  • @RexDogma Congrats new subscriber and friend

  • all these calls for freedom and anarchy and realising the "truth" is bullshit..live your life, do good things, die happy. fuck everything else. don't over complicate our existence.

  • @toonde101 Yea the statement kinda means that.. There is no point in fighting over which law is perfect.. everyone thinks their law rocks according to their religion.. Hassan taught that True law is made from Discipline and Logic not from faith..

  • If someone write what they said word for word I will subscribe

  • I think we should all first look at the life of Hassan Sabah before liking this video and doing thumbs ups.

Strange, the way they turn villains into ultimate heroes.

  • First time I heard that I'm like

Okay, everything we hear is a lie. But everything is permitted, so.... we believe all those lies? Or is it just a lie until we prove it true? Or maybe it's not permitted if it is a lie or....

    FUCK

  • Its a self defeating statement. Simply what Hassan-i Sabbāh meant was that there was no such thing as right or wrong. Absolute, Truth exists only within our perceptions, and when removed from said perceptions it falls completely apart. Why is this? Because that's what gets you what you want. In our society, assertion is necessary, or you go unfulfilled. In a nutshell: Its a maxim of simplistic reason and logicity in denouncement of faith and divinity. There:)

  • @Markymarkymark100 why wasnt this comment raised to the top?

  • @Markymarkymark100 Soooo I should run naked down Wallstreet?

  • @stgmilleralive haha, no you should use your mind. Anarchy is the true nature of all things. Monarchy democracy, communism. all useless form to control the human mind but your mind cannot be controlled it cannot Be restrained it has no boundaries it has its will anarchy is the nature of all things. Judaism, Christianity, and Islam all formed from Abraham also believe in the same monotheistic god. For centuries they have fought for what? power, to control man instead of spreading the truth.

  • @Markymarkymark100 in revelations ezio will say the assassins definition of the saying

  • @Markymarkymark100 Actually, it's explained by Ezio at the end of Assassin's Creed: Revelations and it's not that.

  • @Markymarkymark100

But this statement in itself lacks wisdom. It is defining an absolute - one side or the other. It acknowledges the wisdom of the individual but not of the whole.

The illusion is perfected by the connection and interaction between the individual perspective and the overall perspective - Reason and Logos.

To say everything is permitted is to say one is allowed to do everything. In truth nothing is permitted. Everything just IS.

Everything is true, nothing is permitted.

  • @Markymarkymark100

Everything is true for every possibility has equal chance to be true. One possibility cannot truly will over another. No possibility is permitted to be greater than another.

Everything is true, but nothing is permitted.

Everything just IS. Reason may be used to interfere with Logos but Logos can just as well interfere with reason. The ancient debates of Fate and Will tie in.

Wisdom is not limited to Reason. And to denounce faith, neither is Wisdom limited to Logos.

  • @Epikossumnis how do you interpret the word "logos"?

i always understood it to be a synonym for reason, knowledge, order...

i also disagree with your interpretation of the creed

it defines a relation, not an absolute.

what it says is in essence that the overall, the objective perspective takes priority over the individual, subjective perspective .

that the only truth is that nothing is true, and that individuals must accomodate themselves and their actions to that fact

  • @AlexRider001

The idea that Logos represents reason and knowledge has been misinterpreted throughout the ages. Order fits better as the definition. The ones that first created the concept were the Stoics. They defined it as the Natural Order of which reason and knowledge are aligned with. In truth, Logos represents Fate - contrary to free will. Hitsuzen as opposed to Guzen. I take that a bit futher. You see, Fate and its natural laws - the Natural Order - exist to keep the universe stable.

  • @AlexRider001

By saying everything is true, I mean that everything is possible. I believe that Fate has a "base truth". It accounts for every possibility - every action. To say that everything is permitted is to say that one's own will - if their will is strong enough - may fully go against the natural order. In actuality, Fate would have already prepared for that action of will and made something occur which would balance it out and allow the possible path to continue.

  • @AlexRider001

This way, no act of will may disrupt the natural order. Logos itself will still have the greater control. Ths is another interpretation of "predetermination". Everything is permitted - this is false for Fate will not allow total free will. Nothing is true - false, for everything is true even in merit that everything is possible. Think about it: He had so much power from the Apple yet a lowly assassin was able to rid him. In the end, Logos did not permit his actions.

  • @Epikossumnis Old-fashioned philosophy.

Will itself also falls under the "Nothing is true" statement.

You treat it as though it were a separate instance, but isn't it just another example of cold matter going through complex electrochemical reactions in a basically predetermined fashion?

And if Will itself is an illusion, why are infinite possibilites for Fate even necessary?

Or do you believe that the mind/Will transcends matter?

Because in that case, I'd have to call you crazy :)

  • @AlexRider001

    Then pickle me crazy! :D

  • @Markymarkymark100 With that said I doubt anyone could call Hassan-i Sabbāh a muslim after the fact when he made his conclusions.

  • @Markymarkymark100 I don't think thats necessarily true. To suggest that truth only exist in ones own perceptions equally invalidates those perceptions themselves. You cannot have truthful perceptions of something illusory. Therefore, the only true one can know is the Cartesian, cogito ergo sum. I think that what the video states is the best extrapolation, Spinoza, Nietzsche all said it but the fact is that all law and reason is based in trust and understanding.

  • Requescat in pace.

  • I want this quote tattoed across my chest :)

  • @QuibbyFailed as aswesome as this quote is, you would look like a twat.

  • @RollAnotherJ lol

  • @KyuuMayCry Yes, true. It can help us, but the ACTUAL beliefs of a human is up to himself, as he THINKS for himself. We are unlike other animals not only granted the gift to open our eyes, but the gift to understand WHY we are here, once u grasp into those parts of science and philosophy understanding human consciousness and society is an easy matter :)

  • My favorite quote in the game.

  • 6 people are templars and there is 421 assassin's hmm wonder who wins

  • Jeffreygebbin yes u just got to look hard enough :)

  • Aren't there any people out there ever wanted to make an assasins order?.

  • @jeffreygebbin i do

  • the meaning of life, is live live

  • Only when you lose everything, you have nothing to lose and know what is true and what is permitted.

  • There is such a thing as objective morality.

  • wouldnt that make "everything is permitted" not true or even "nothing is true" not true O.o

  • @idonotwastenames No, you misunderstood. The "world" here is society. Of course there are truths about the "universe" etc, but as to nothing (they say) is true, and laws arise from REASON.

  • @jananmatt2 Actually, the motto is real. The real assassin's guild back in the 12th century really did have that motto. The vast majority of historical events in the game series actually happened, though the facts have been embellished to a large degree to tie it all into a cohesive story. But outside of Altair and his descendants, Ezio and his family, etc, everybody was real and they really were where they were in the game and did what they did in the game.

  • I've included this video in an article about some of the philosophy behind the Assassin's Creed series. bit.ly / mvYwdz

  • This also goes with the U.S. constitutional 1st amendment. Although we have the freedom to say whatever we want, there should be a duty to use wisdom behind that. If a person throws a stone and (intentionally) breaks an arm, should he not pay pay for that. If a person throws words that psychologicallly hurt another, shouldnt they pay for that as well?

  • @vraiman16 no, words are words. If you're feelings are hurt by words then you should stop being a little pussy.

  • I long for the day when men turn away from invisible monsters and once more embrace a more rational view of the world. But these new religions are so convenient and promise such terrible punishment should one reject themI worry that fear shall keep us stuck to what is surely the greatest lie ever told.

    -Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad

  • would playstation ourselves =)) 0:12

  • @jananmatt2 It's not. Are you blind? It's much older than that. For one, the top rated comment mentions a Nietszche quote. Without challenging your intellect I can inform you that he lived in the -other- part of the 20th century.

  • Hashishin-Hassasin, the follower of Hassan, were an order of Nizari Ismailis, particularly those of Syria and Persia that existed from around 1092 to 1265.

In 1265, they dissapear somehow. The words "Nothing is true and everything is permitted" were last words of Hassan-i Sabbah, founder of Hassasin order.

Why were they called Hassasin's? They used Hashish(Marijuana) to numb their emotions and senses, in order to become ruthless.

  • @jananmatt2 Actually the phrase" Nothing is True, Every Thing is Permitted is taken from the book Alamut by Vladimir Bartol. The book was a source of inspiration for the first Assassin's Creed. The Phrase is the highest truth of the Ismaili, the sect of Islam that gave rise to the historical Hashashin( The real Order of the Assassins). Check it out on Wikipedia or the Assassin's Creed Wiki.

  • "I understand now that our creed does not command us to be free, it commands us to be wise."

  • @jananmatt2 It's kinda crazy how they turned it into something so ominous in a video game

  • love this game...n can't agree more....

  • i like AC1 and Altaïr more.... it feels more like an assassins life... AC2 is more just kill, run and collect....

  • @00SilverWing and yet that was the complaint about ac1...

  • @xx2RAHxx mhm?

  • @00SilverWing yep

  • @xx2RAHxx ur saying that mine was a spam?

  • @00SilverWing i dont see how you deducted that from my statement, i was pretty much saying i disagree with your statement

  • @xx2RAHxx u just woke up that how... lol of course... u know u can keep ur opinions to urself and thank u for ruining my morning

  • @00SilverWing but i can also reply to your comment, and thanks for acting like a cry baby

  • @xx2RAHxx :) loool how mature this is again xD ok lets just stop this will we

  • @00SilverWing very well

  • ac 1 is so much deeper and darker then 2. i seriously hope revelations isn't also as disappointing.

  • @blackfire053 ha um yea not really

  • We can't definitively prove that the world exists, but that does not make it an illusion. Either I'm missing something or the step from "what is truth" to "what is the world" doesn't make sense.

  • "When the Christian crusaders in the Orient came across that invincible order of Assassins – that order of free spirits par excellence whose lowest order received, through some channel or other, a hint about that symbol and spell reserved for the uppermost echelons alone, as their secret: "nothing is true, everything is permitted". Now that was freedom of the spirit, with that, belief in truth itself was renounced."

    - Friedrich Nietzsche

  • @Lordofcookiejars Is this quote... Real? The line is older than this game? Unbelievable.

  • @vgman94 Nothing is true everything is permitted is a quote given by an assassin leader apparently on his death bed, I think that's where they got the idea from.

  • @SirRecluse I meant, did this exist in real life. An assassin in real life, or what?

  • @vgman94 The saying nothing is true everything is permitted did exist, the order of assassins did exist, whether their beliefs were the same as the games it is unknown, not much is actually known about the order of assassins. An order of assassins did however fight for power in the crusades against Muslim and christian crusaders according to the historical documents of their enemies.

  • @SirRecluse Are you talking about the Templars and/or Freemasons? Or... The Hashasin? Not sure if I spelled that right, but I heard there was an order of Assassins that went by a similar name.

  • @vgman94 Yes the Assassins that's right The Hashishin

  • @SirRecluse The way it sounds, it seems that Assassin as a word came from Hashishin.

  • @Lordofcookiejars When I'm alone i Like to lay on the ground and pretend im a carrot

    -Santa Claus

  • @XKellonX Lol, the Friedrich Nietzsche quote is actually legit though. Its from "On the Genealogy of Morality" Section 24. In a nutshell the book is pretty much Nietzsche's reasoning of why he believed religion has no value and that mankind should go beyond the simple ideas of good and evil.

  • @Lordofcookiejars YES, It'sfrom Geneology of Ethics.

  • Why do christians always comment stupid things on videos here in youtube? I am not against any religion, but people can keep it to themselves, you know.

  • I don't believe Altaïr actually gave an answer to the question of "What is the truth?", he just spoke about something related to the question. He could be a politician.

  • @Marspilot8 as philosophical as it was you know the we have over 20 senses including equilibrioception (balance), thermoception (heat) and nociception (pain) these are all senses in there own way and should be expressed as much

  • @trigolopio More importantly, "knowledge" isn't a sense nor close to it.

  • Nothing is true, everything is permitted.

  • Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ <---- YAY FOR THE BUTTERFLY!!!!

  • As said in Assassins Creed II, We were born with only 5 senses, Sight, Smell, Hearing, touch and taste, the sixth one was locked away, Knowledge.

  • @Marspilot8 Was that ever explicitly stated in II?

  • @ThatNateGuy At the end of the game, Juno is talking to you, Juno being another being like Minerva. And she states that when your trying to get to the Platform where the Apple of Eden is, its said with alot of other interesting things, so.

  • Help me reveal the new Assassin's Creed #ACReveal

  • nulla e reale, tutto e lecito

  • i think that this phrase came from God and who doesn't understand it he will never see clearly

  • @ShockinglyRelaxing Hahaha nice troll

  • @ThatNateGuy i see you dont understand it friend :( jm so sorry for you

  • ahh a refreshing part of my philosophy :D

  • I've got his diary in the Brotherhood collector's edition.

  • I find it amazing and awesome that a 40 second snippet of a cutscene from a video game is cause for the level of debate and conversation going on in the comments here.

  • Some David Icke shit right there.

  • @Nytemere haha

  • @Nytemere It seems you never read Vladimir Bartol's "Alamut". Icke is a joke.

  • @Nytemere More like some Nagarjuna shit right there.

  • Nihilism ftw.

  • reason derives from ones will. we create reason to our actions. our actions are always good in intent but often will create negatives however we do not allow ourselves to see this. truth is indoctrination a set planning of good and bad and through it condemnation of others. understanding of each others truth toward a harmonious conclusion however.. that is the reality we must strive for, this is a mountain that i doubt will ever be overcome.

  • the statement is clearly self delusive. Nothing is true? You dont exist? eh? ..then what is your identity? nothing?

  • @solobirds It's not. Specifically, in the context of the game it's meant to be an acknowledgement of the state of current world thinking. As he says in the video the world is an illusion, people being guided by faith in the insubstantial rather than reason or any kind of intelligent thought.
