Actually, now that I think about it, sort of a subtle poke at the fear-factor of religion. People have used fear forever to make it so they feel like they are in control. That's why people are stuck with believing in religion. Fear of burning in some shameful hell.

If you're not willing to do a bit of creative thinking on what the words mean/could mean than maybe you should stick to all of the other music out there that has obvious (boring) lyrics. Arcade Fire doesn't write music thinking ok this is exactly what it means and nothing else. They right it in an abstract way on purpose so it can mean something to the individual listener. There is no right or wrong interpretation. This way more people can genuinely identify with it.

I mean, "Free Bird" by Lynyrd Skynyrd could be considered overrated, but no one who has a real taste in music can say truly say that that song is awesome. Best solo ever.

Unlike November Rain by GnR, that is what you would call overrated, GnR being the most overrated band EVER and Slash being the most overrated guitarist EVER.

as far as the overrated thing goes, things only become "overrated" because they were merited greatly to begin with.

personally, I think they're excellent. I just bought Funeral yesterday (i know a bit late in the game haha). I knew they were good but i never really bothered to look in on them, upon closer inspection, i've realized that they're fucking great!!
