I agree free cards are ALWAYS good no matter what TCG you play. Particularly, in MTG where draw engines are very hard to start and keeping them going is even harder.

The manacost becomes 8 because you paid 8 for it if I'm not mistaken. The converted mana cost is 8. Alternatively, if you were to cascade INTO a banefire, the cost would be 1 because x is automatically zero unless you make it something else.

Just for the record: Converted Mana is the grey symbol in the mana cost with a number in it, right?

nope its the whole casting cost

for example:

elspeth has 2WW

so its converted mana cost is 4.

but for some cards like spectral, flamejavelin, etc. they are 6

No, it is played as the cascade triggered ability resolves, not as an instant.
