  • Calories in - Calories out! Thank you for simplified way of explanation..I used to try figuring out what composition of macronutritions I should eat: 17.2312 fat ?,% 52.773 carbs?, %32.333 protein ??? :D LOL

I dont think about that anymore..Thank you steve!

  • I'm not giving up eating! I'll just do all my television watching on my little MP3/video player, which I strap to the display of the cardio machines. After 4+ hours of watching all my favorite comedy shows I'm usually up to having exercised away 3,000kcal, not even counting the dumbbell lifting I do while pedaling on the recumbent exercycle.

Net weight loss is not my objective, either, although recently I've lost some. What I really want is lose it on my belly and gain it on my shoulders...

  • Your the man Steve!!! I have been researching this out for many years with my own workouts and diet plan. Everything you have said thus far has confirmed what I have found. Tell let like it is Steve!! Everyone is trying to be polite about things but people can see who holds the truth.

  • Thanks! I wish more people would listen AND believe! They should be glad I'm telling them The Truth and I'm not trying to sell them bull shit products or false information.

  • Steve's years ahead of his time! He's been preaching this for years, when will you people listen? I love you steve!

  • A-MAN!

  • Simple but profound! Thanks!

  • Profoundly simple!!!!

  • food does not cause weight loss, less food cause weight loss... a simple statement but it covers the whole truth! thanks!!!

  • Hey Steve! I love tuna footlongs from subway, and right now Im on a Salmon, Tilapia, tuna diet, and Im doing my best to avoid the tuna @ subway but I get cravings so bad that it tortures me, and I guess if I do get one I won't have to eat the WHOLE thing right, or maybe I could ask for a 6inch sub.

  • ABSOLUTELY! BUT you don't need it to lose weight AND I want people to have success without major changes to their life and eating. Once they've lost weight THEN we can improve their diet. Gradual changes that lead to success. Some of my viewers don't seem to understand this concept. They just want to criticisize.

  • HYE STEVE! isnt a healthy diet important?

  • If you're eating enough probably not. Eating through out the day is more important for VERY heavy and out of shape people because when they eat fewer meals more of their calories are stored as fat. So they need to eat smaller meals more often and exercise. Because you workout out and are receiving enough calories you're fine.

  • I read my post and I'm not sure it's clear. I'll usually do a protein shake in the a.m. and go to the gym. At least an hour of weights and another hour of cardio. I'm guessing at least 1000 cal burned. I'll eat way late in the afternoon, maybe a 700 cal. meal. Then nothing for the rest of the day. Is my body eating lean muscle and then when the meal hits, it stores it as fat?

  • Perhaps I'm splitting hairs here. Help me. Please. I understand calorie deficit. I have a bad habit of eating only one, may two meals a day. The meal can be big (cal rich). I work out hard (weights) and an hour of cardio (700+ cals burned). Is my sporadic eating causing my body to eat lean muscle and then store fat because of 1 meal/body thinks it's starving? I have a hard time eating 3 meals or more, per day. Does my body go into starve mode because of my eating habits (and store fat)? Thanks!

  • One pint of Haagen Dazs ice cream is 1200 calories. Assume for a second that you eat 1300 calories of regular food and one pint of ice cream every day. that's 2500 calories total. do you REALLY think that you won't be fat and retarded in one month? I eat 2500 calories of fat and protein, and very few carbs with NO SUGAR. CALORIES ARE NOT THE SAME YOU FUCKING RETARD.

  • If you would just LISTEN to the video you'd realize that your comments are completely irrelevant, you TRY to sound smart and at the same time you're going around using foul language on everybody. He ( Steve) is talking to the average overweight guy who needs to start loosing weight and and just by eating less is more than enough to START loosing weight, so why don't you just get your head out of your ass and play the video again, maybe this time you'll be able to hear better

  • retard, watch the video

  • One other thing you geniuses: Explain why inuits were healthy eating ZERO carbs and seal meat all day.

  • DIGESTIBLE calories of anything will put wwight on you if you eat enough but I guess those doctors and researchers at the New England Journal of Medicine don't know as much as you.

  • there are two recent studies at the NE Journal of Medicine. The most recent, says that calorie in = calorie out. They setup a straw man for the low carb diet, because that group still ate 35% carbs. everyone knows that is NOT low carb. The previous study from last year showed that LOW CARB dieters without calorie restrictions LOST MORE WEIGHT and ATE MORE.

  • of course, if you're a doctor whos studied this his whole life, then i'm wrong and i'll respectfully bow out. something tells me you arent even close to being a doctor.

  • i eat ALL DAY. i'm eating 2000-2500 calories and STILL losing weight. A few months ago, I used to eat less calories than now, but I kept gaining weight. you can do what you want fatty. what do i care? the only thing that 2000 calories and broccoli have in common is the nomenclature. your body does not treat all calories the same way. my diet is 65% FAT, and I KEEP LOSING WEIGHT. read Gary Taubes' book "Good Calories, Bad Calories" to educate yourself. Or watch his lecture online

  • calorie in/ calorie is only partially correct. 2000 calories of ice cream is the same as 2000 calories of broccoli? PLEASE.

  • the calorie is a measure of ENERGY dipshit. nobody is saying that ice cream is healthier. but 2000 calories of anything is just as hard to burn off as anything else! its like that old joke "What's heavier - a pound of bricks or a pound of feathers?" obviously, theyre the same weight.

which takes more energy to burn? 2000 calories of broccoli or 2000 calories of ice cream? hmmm, i dont know - oh right, they both require 2000 calories (or 8373600 Joules) of work to burn off!

  • wow. your ignorance astounds. let's see what happens when i eat 2000 calories of broccoli per day and you eat 2000 calories of ice cream each day. you will become a fat pig, while i will lose weight. but no, this concept will be lost on you.

  • alright man, lets have this discussion.

first of all, i think it would be impossible to consume 2000 calories of broccoli in one day, but lets ignore that and say we can.

a calorie is a unit of energy. i will of course grant you that broccoli is healthier than ice cream. however, your body can only process so much of the stuff that the broccoli brings into your body. what is your body going to do with the rest of it? store it.

this is where you lose perspective. if you eat fruit all day. . .

  • or if you eat ice cream all day, the fruits fill you up quicker because of whats inside the fruit. it takes more ice cream to make you full than vegetables, hence more calories. you have to stop thinking about what the food is. a calorie is a calorie man.

300 calories of broccoli is very filling. 300 calories of ice cream is like 1 normal serving size. think about it.

  • YW! YW! YW! I'm glad to help. Check out my site when it relaunches in about 10 days. More good info.

  • THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!

    this totally makes sense!!

  • Hey steve I have a problem I have been doing turbo jam(the 40 min workout)

everyday for a whole month and I have lost any weight and Im on a 1200 calore diet

    what am I doing wrong.

  • IF walking at a fast pace burns about 170 calories for 30 mintues, 40 mintues of turbo jam MIGHT burn150 because there's lots of standing. 1) Make sure you're eating 1200 calories 2) Eat 1200 calories consistently 3) Go outside and start walking and jogging for 30 minutes 3-4 times a week. 4) No cheat days OR don't eat to much on cheat days. This will make a big difference.

  • you need to go on a low carb diet and eat more and STILL lose weight.

  • Love your body!!!

  • I am almost certainly heard this a million times already but, you are the best thing that has ever happened to YouTube. I also think its safe to safe we all appreciate what you do for us, more then you can know. And it's all out of the goodness of your heart.

    THANK YOU

  • Yes. All you need to do is lower your calorie in take or increase your calorie utilization.

  • Could you get a 6-pack with regular exercise and calorie counting or do you have to start trying to portion it out at that point to the different percentages of fat/carbs/protein?

  • I used to doubt the calories in/out thing but I lost about 10 pounds in two weeks when I got sick. I wasn't even exercising that much, I just was living off of a few cheez its and pieces of chicken everyday. lol It was like 1200 calories a day

  • Thanks. I'm glad to do it.

  • Steve you're the best man! what you say seems so much more true than all this complicated diet stuff. Thanks (=

  • Comment removed

  • Thank you!

  • you look younger without your glasses ;)

  • question 2

    2. i use a small trick to create a calorie deficit and keep myself satisfied, tell me whether it is right or wrong, i start my day by eating fruits (any fruit, i just eat one or two), then i stay like that to 8 or 9 at night, then i prepare for my meal, this helps me to eat as i wish (but of course within my calories limit, about 1500), and i eat a variety of food which is something that keeps me very satisfied, am i wrong in piling up all my meals into one only or this is OK

  • Total calroeis is still the most important thing. BUT if somebody is REALLY overweight it's better to spread the meals out over the day. This is because fewer calories will be saved as fat and it will also help curb your hunger and keep your energy constant.

  • hi steve

    1. do i have to be out of breath all the time when i am doing cardio in order to burn calories, because i do a daily workouts where i take the stairs of the building i live in (9 floors) for about 2 or 3 time without stopping, and i get so out of breath that i really feel tired and stop. same thing i do with running, that my kidney starts to ache me alot and i get so out of breath, and i start to feel guilty that i slowed down my speed because i am exhausted

    thanks .

  • A slower pace (not out of breath) would be better. You could do it longer and you would be burning more fat calories.

  • thanks, that's a relieve :)

  • The problem with just eating less is that it's easier said than done. Most people remain hungry. I instruct my clients to add vegetables to their diet as they eat less of other things so that they still stay full.

  • sorry for posting 2 times

  • i have a question..i didnt know in wich video should i post my comment but stil..hope u'll answer..i've been working out for about..7 months..and i gained some muscle..but i still have some fat on my belly (i dont have a six pack). im afrraid if i keep a very strict diet and i might loose my body fat, but i will loose the muscle that i've gained too. is this true? what should i eat/do? by the way, i always eat natural, fruits, legums, i dont eat fast food, sweets so my diet is pretty natural).

  • Only when somebody has MAXIMIZED their muscularity AND lowered their body fat to very low levels do they have to worry about losing muscle when losing body fat. You haven't been training long enough to worry about this. You can certaily still gain muscle & lose fat. The most important thing to do is workout consistently & intensely. That will cause your muscles to grow. Don't worry about eating specific foods. Keep eating healthy, continue doing cardio (if you're doing it) and keep lifting.

  • thank you very much for your answer. your advices are great. thx :-)

  • You're welcome!

  • Nope.

  • Thanks!

  • steve, pleease answer this..does staying up all night and sleeping all day have any effect at all on weight loss or weight gain goals?

  • You are CORRECT sir !!!!

  • EXTREME calorie restriction. 8-10 Hours of training and exercise. AND the motivation of money!!!

  • Hi Steve, I've been watching the biggest loser, how can those people loose 8-10 lbs every week in a healthy manner?

  • why will alcohol effect your cardio if you drink to much? and also is drinking 1 time a week about 12 beers is that ok?

  • hey steve i have 2 questions

i ate 3 hotdogs with little cheese balls

already in the hotdog is that a lot of food

and with no bread for breakfast.

and why when i workout i only sweat on my head and not the rest of my body.

    is this good.

  • It doesn't matter when you eat or drink and when you do cardio. The calories you eat and drink are NOT the calories you're using to do cardio. It's the total calories eaten and burned in a 24 hour period. that determine weight loss.

  • thanks sweetie..that makes a lot of sense :)

    You're the BEST!

  • steve, does that mean that I can lose incredibly if I do 45-60min cardio without eating? maybe drink a energy drink before i work out. I know u have to eat but i'm talking about ..is it just plain bad if i don't eat nothing at all when i do cardio in da morning or in the afternoon?

    HELP ME! thanks :)

  • I'm relaunching my site in a few weeks so I'll let everybody know how to sign up. Smoking anything will affect cardio performance. Your body runs best on clean air. Once you start contaminating that air with things (smoke, smog, etc.) it will affect your performance. Now, it will also depend on how much you smoke, how often, your age, your condtion, etc. Same with alcohol.

  • hi steve nice video i got a question for you how do i sign up for your website and also does weed effect your cardio? like i drink alcohol once in a while but ive been doing some research and i watch alot of ufc and nick diaz said he smokes weed and got busted for weed by the ufc and hes in good cardio shape and i did some research that said weed was better than alcohol so im wondering if you smoke weed will if effect your cardio thanks

  • GREAT job!

  • I lost 100lbs last year. If I had not started by eating less, I probably would have given up. As I lost more weight, it became easier and easier to switch to more healthy foods. 5 stars.

  • hey steve, I recently have been dieting and exercising heavily and am beginning to see my bench press weight decline...is there a more effective way to get cut and keep the muscle i have?

Also, I can't wait for your new site to come out... i'm looking forward to it

    thanks for everything.

  • Yeah if you could please address the cutting while maintaining as summer will be rolling around soon and this will be my first time cutting. Thanks.

  • Keep the cardio and the slight calorie decrease and 1) Always Bench & Incline Bench using a bar each chest workout. These are the 2 main exercises for chest. 2) Once warmed-up lower your reps to save energy and kick up the weight. 3) 3-4WORKING sets of each exercise once warmed-up. 4) 3 sets of either dumbell flies or DB bench as a 3rd exercise if needed.

  • Steve, if i may i would like to say that you are a brilliant man, because in 95% of your videos you try to talk to those people who want to lose weight in a very realistic and practical manner, not those ways of (torturing) the fat persons

love you really and thanks very much

  • Thank you. It just takes the right knowledge and some consistent effort.

  • idk if i explained myself right but basically i agree with you, lose weight first =motivation to eat healthier in the future

  • omg from the first video i saw of yours ive listened to you, and that changed my view on "dieting" ive offically lost 40 pounds and now eating healthy rather than just looking to cut calories is alot easier. i think people forget we get overweight because we dont know how to eat right, if you go on a diet and worry about fats, proteins and sugars it becomes overwhelming and makes you just want to go back to your old ways

  • Keep up the good work!

  • Thanks thats what I thought! Great advise in your clips! I'll be tuning in more. I'm looking to hit my goal of 11% body fat. I'm at 14.9% right now at 5 8.5" 184lbs.

    Thanks, again...

  • Large quick changes in weight up or down is usually fluids. Remember, salts and sugars cause our bodies to retain fluids.

  • Hi Steve,

How do you gain 4 pound in two days? I went down from 202 to 184 using your tips of eating less keeping my calories around 1500 -1800 a day and exercising everyday and it worked great. Friday I was 184lbs weighed in this morning at 188lbs is it possible to gain 4 pounds over the weekend or could this be a result of fluid retention? I'm a male BTW...

  • Thank you!

  • ROCK ON STEVE! ;)

  • YES! YES! YOU ARE SOOOO RIGHT! ;)

  • Thank you!

  • Great video Steve! By the way, you look thinner.

  • Thank you! After surgery on my elbow I can't quite lift as heavy so I'm not eating as much. I'm down about 10 pounds. Good observation!

  • i saw the same report on yahoo news....its true all it is is calorie deficiency, but eating 2000 calories in sugar will provide a different type of energy "feel" than say from say 2000 calories in protein. So while you can eat "whatever" you want and lose weight, you wont be able to sustain high levels of energy throughout the day if your eating nothing but junk food.

  • what about loosing body fat and gaining (or maintaining) muscle?

  • How hard was it to understand that calorie deficit = "weight loss". There are no shortcuts to long term success.

  • Steve, what does a person have to do when he is on a plateau? I've had a calorie deficit in my diet for quite a while and have been doing exercises but the weight loss has stopped. I just want to lose the last 5-10 lbs and it seems so difficult!

  • Most people lose focus (meaning they stop exercising or start eating poorly) and call it a plateau. Keep watching what you eat and be consistent with your cardio. It will happen just refocus on what you're doing.

  • your 100% right. I have eaten bugers and sodas plus junk food. I just cut back a little on sodas and fries also working at the hospital (all that walking) 229-224lbs eating my favorite foods give this a try just keep under a certain amt of calories

  • how come i won loose any weight. my weight stay the same 220, i go to the gym for 2 hours and 30 minute each day but my weight stay the same :(..

  • If I ever get paid half as much as Tiger I'd be happy!

  • LOL! I WISH! I WISH! I WISH! I WISH!

  • How much you getting payed to wear that nike shirt during the video Steve? :P

  • I think the idea of healthy eating to lose weight is more in terms of eating more healthy foods to the point that you feel satisfied (not hungry) and intake less calories vs eating less (perhaps feeling hungry or unsatisfied) but continuing to eat the foods you "love" in order to produce the caloric deficit.

I think the best approach would be a combination of the two. Eat healthier to create a deficit while satisfying your appetite but treat yourself to small portions of what you like as well.

  • And doing the right things! My pleasure and keep up the good work! ~Steve

  • i love your videos man...u have motivated me to finally take control over my weight...i still eat whatever i want for the most part but the amount of it is much less...sorta like the weight watchers point system...im now also lifting weights...im still in the initial sore phase...its painful but im happy because i know those muscles are finally getting worked the way they should be...the famous saying of "no pain no gain" is so true...its all about sacrifice and dedication...thanks Steve!

  • YES! Small changes adding up to big changes.

  • "I always like Steves input, it's useful info, but I have heard a couple conflicting arguments. It does matter what you eat."

If you listen more carefully, Steve also says it matters WHAT you eat, but his point is that changing a diet is changing a lifestyle, so you have to start small and simple and that is with eating a bit less of what you currently eat. It's the most simple way to start improving your diet.

  • its totally possible. Ever wonder how anerxic people lose weight so fast? they stop eating completely.

  • lol

  • I always like Steves input, it's useful info, but I have heard a couple conflicting arguments. It does matter what you eat. My Mom can't tell you the lesson she learned, because she died of Diabetes. My Dad can tell you the lesson he learned though he's dieing of heart disease. They both ate the wrong things all their lives. Steve is correct though calorie deficiency, and stop paying attention to "Gimmicks'. There is no secret to bought. Thanks Steve.

  • Thank you!

  • I definitely have to know what you think about metabolic typing

  • Garbage. Want to speed up your metalism, just exercise, improve your cardio and increase your muscle mass. But metabolic typing is just one more gimmick.

  • I was a sprinter. In my club the best athletes was eat KFC, McD and other junk foods. And they were ripped with 6 packs. But it's true, we trained more and harder than an average man.

  • lol saw it on the news and just laughed. you have been saying it but calorie deficit has been around long before you brought it up 2 yrs ago ;)

  • Great vid, no nonsense and to the point. Makes a lot of sense, great job!

  • Thanks. That's what I try to do will all my videos.

  • awesome.

  • Thanks steve!

  • Yo're welcome!

  • Okay i need help please help me i want to gain weight and get buff yet be really fast is this possible and if so how do i do it

  • Not possible.

  • My Pleasure. Thank you!!!

  • STEVE!!

i cant express how much i love you!!!

    your videos are very helpful

    thank you so much!!!

  • Ive been watching steves videos for a while now. he seems genuine about helping people and doesnt judge anyone

  • That's right. I simply want to tell people the truth so they can lose weight and improve their health.

  • people on diets usually tend to eat lower calorie foods because that gives them the freedom to eat more than if they were eating their normal food and having to cut it in half

  • thx steve ur videos always help me out man =DD

  • Always glad to help!

  • this is a smart man i going to try this myself

  • i like your simple concept. It really helps. I started control the portion i eat without eliminating any food group. As long as I eat less calories than I use everyday, I lose weight.

  • Yes you will. Just be consistent with your eating. A bit of exercise each day will also speed the process.

  • Steve i love your vids! They are simple and very informative! Please make a video for the lower abs fat loss pls

  • Thanks. You can't lose lower ab fat specifically. But as somebody's total body fat gets lower their lower ab fat will disappear.

  • I would change one word and that's "diet." You want to lose weight, change your lifestyle and don't call it a diet. You want to keep the weight off, you have to change your activity level and what you are eating forever. Go back to what made you gain weight in the first place, you're just gonna gain it back.

  • I DID see that on the Today show...

Giving success and approaching weight loss on a gradient makes so much sense!

  • Thank you!

  • Aah Steve. You're a great inspiration! Keep up the great work with your videos you're doing here. I'm sure you're helping a lot of people. :)

  • Fantastic video as usual. Very refreshing to hear a logical and a highly reasoned approach to fitness and health.

Thank you for posting this collection of videos. You are an inspiration.

  • Thank you!

  • and the nthey'll get depressed

  • legend

  • Word!

  • the most real guru on youtube.

  • Thank you!

  • When I saw the articles on this in the news I was thinking, "Steve is going to love this stuff" he's been laying the common sense down all along.

  • awesome

  • Thank you!

  • you may think your eating more, but the calories are probably less.

  • no way! i wouldnt eat anything all day during work, then i would eat 1 meal of burger king and thats it for all day. I GOT FAT AS HELL listening to this diet! Switched it up and started eating complex carbs and healthy meals, and now i lost that fat. this guy is 100% wrong sry.

  • protein shakes have no calories so you are still starving yourself effectively

  • the same thing happens to me ,when i eat 1 meal a day i am always a bit tubby ,but when i eat 3 meals a day i loose the weight ,i think when you eat reguarly it speeds up your metabolism.

  • basic bio in school actually will back up what steve is saying if a body burns normaly say 2000 calories a day and you say you only at burger king once a day and thats it a burger king meal depending on what your eating can actually add up to 2000 calories more or less a whopper alone has like 600 or 700 calories plus were you working out when you were eating less or are you working out now that is a big factor

  • You shouldn't starve all day and then eat something. Eat regurlarly* but eat LESS.

You didnt starve yourself all day and then ate/drank your protein shakes and bread, did you?

  • Na i lift weights and eat all day long (only healthy food) and i got in great shape. I still use my diet and its been about four months. Eat more, Lift more, Eat healthy. Do Not: Eat less and Eat whatever.

  • Well, dude...it's because you slowed your metabolism by only eating once a day...slower metabolism means you'll gain body fat much easier. I had Burger King today, actually. I don't see my 6 pack abs and obliques going away anytime soon from it. I eat fast food at least once a week. But, eating healthy is important, too. But...what made you have bad results was starving yourself. Your metabolism slows down when you eat less so it can store body fat easier...thus making you survive longer.

  • very true man but i stick to my principle that are in disagreance to this video: Eat more, Lift more, Eat healthy. Do Not: Eat less and Eat whatever.

  • Apparently, you didn't understand $hit bro! He said eat less meaning to get less calories. Eat more if you would like, but just don't forget to work out EXTRA hard after that. And also he was talking to average FAT people, not to any bodybuilder or teenager who is naturally eats more and works out better. If average people unable/can't/don't want to work out hard then they eat less. But that doesn't mean to starve or something just to get a little less calories than they used to. Thanks Steve!

  • i think normal fat people do better on diets when they eat more and exercise.

  • you my nigga steve

  • great!
