  • she sings like the angel

  • She's voice very beautiful!!! brava

  • i love her clear high notes and sound of her voice is beautiful when she doesnt produce vibrato with her mouth and tongue. But scales are not very good imho.

  • It's beautiful, but isn't it the same way she ended Sepmre Libera too?

  • She is very good--brava!

  • Breath taking.. very beautiful

  • Oh man... she is GORGEOUS!!!!!!! BRAVA!

  • I like her voice very much, but I don´t like that she don´t have a good diction and she change her mouth in the same sound (note)

  • @Schollistico SHE is a WOMAN thank you very much

  • @dj12120 Yes and the sky is blue...and i think she is singing opera, do you know what does it mean?opera?anyway, i do like Sumi Jo and i only refered to his acting, i find it quite unbelievable. Thank you too (i feel better now that i know that she is "she" and not "he"...;-)

  • @Schollistico well then maybe you can use the right words next time you comment

  • @dj12120 i am sorry but i do not get you at all. I apologize if i made you feel bad, i did not want to. I only wanted to express my point about his singing/acting. I do not like here, the Eb is horrible and his acting not convincing. And i repeat, this is opera sir.

  • @Schollistico sigh dude u keep saying HIS VOICE HIS ACTING its HER VOICE HER ACTING. and she reaches that e flat better than a lot of singers. I know what opera is thank you very much.

  • @dj12120 Omg. I am so sorry, and i am so so ashamed...so yes, i am sorry i make mistakes. Thanks for teaching, i will not forget :-)

  • Fantastica!!!! Enorme control del fiato, timbre bellisimo, una gran cantante de nuestro tiempo!!!

  • awkward orchestration... it's not the original. it was mostly noticeable on the vien diletto... weird.

  • a-ma-zing! this woman is friekin amazing!

  • I thought this was beautifully sung by Sumi. She has a pretty voice and this is suited to her light-coloratura voice. Her Lucia is equally as good. I also love that orange gown! Very few gals can look good in orange!

  • No kidding she's asian....Asians can sing beautifully once they take control of their voice and direct it. She must be very talented.

  • You must be a completely inbred troglodyte.

  • wt do u mean by asian can sing beautifully.... -_-" ofcz we can, u knw wt coz there are pitches in most asian languages so we are kinda 'born to' sing -_-" research shows that most asians have perfect pitch, duh

  • sick ending!

  • ya, if that minor6 could b continued it would be much better

  • Have you ever seen Elvira staged? The only person who goes a mad at all is Netrebko. Beverly Sills herself said that Elvira's mad scene is a scene to "put your hands by your side", stand still, and sing. Besides, this is a concert setting.

  • Netrebko ... is.. really BAD.

  • I couldn't agree more, Lucia, Manon, excerpts from Norma (Casta Diva + Ah Bello, Deh Conte), Elvira. Her Traviata was ok, but others were really, as you say it BAD.

  • oh!

    breathtaking and fantastic!!!!!!

  • OMG! i've seen her here in Belgium performing in BOZAR! Since then i fell in love over and over again....

  • wonderful ending!!! gosh!!! what a voice that she has!!! belssed

  • Far out what amazing breath control! Love her!

  • I do agree with howebridge.................and if is not asking to much i would like for sombody to show me why is it a bad interpretation.Thank you

  • I think she's excellent - and people who can sing this kind of music well are rare. Thanks for sharing.

  • That dress is fabulous!

  • BRAVISIMA!!!!

  • Hers is the best voice of all time

  • I m not sure if this is the BEST but one of the best 4 sure

  • Does anyone else think this clip is wound up too fast? This is no comment on the singing itself, just the speed of the recording.

  • go mammasan!

  • Espectacular! belcanto como debe hacerse. Brava Sumi !

  • Her voice is not that small.

  • Anyway you guys can't deny that she is one of the most respected choloratura singers.

  • I wish I could go mad like this. Great posting. Thanks.

  • Technically excellent.I wonder why she does not sing in the very big houses ( voice too small ??? ) I mean Vienna, Milan, London, Buenos Aires.

  • That was just for a TV show, and her perf schedule has been already done for next 5 years.

  • i dont doubt that , but does include a major Opera House like the ones I mentioned before also ?

  • Yes, it does include all of them..

  • @ViennaWaltz If you read her career on wiki you will find she has sung in many big opera houses. and her voice is not small . you need to find a video of her singing with audio that does her voice justice. watch her sing delibes lakme bell son

  • i love the cadenzas she has chosen in the cabaletta, and she is so gentle with the notes. great performance.

  • Brava Sumi!!! Cosi si canta Bellini!

  • Oh my Lord, so sensitive at the beginning. Tears down my cheeks!

  • Gosh, how the violinist behind her feels the music while playing!... Sorry, just a little professional detail.. :-)

About her, she's simply wonderful...perfect in the virtuosistic part...bravo!!

  • Are you saying that the donna Netrebko is a lousy singer????!!!!!

  • She hit the final note, and that's all Bellini requires. That's why Bellini is the greatest ever.

  • Mehr geht nicht. Punkt.

  • OMG! I almost peed my pants! Go Sumi! I love you!

  • i love sumi jo, dearly, because her voice is SOOOOO powerful, it's ridiculous. but someone seriously needs to fix her italian, i mean she's been popular for like, 15-ish years now, can she get a coach from SOMEWHERE? and she needs to work on coming into the high notes (like the e-flat at the end) because she hesitated. she went: f,g *small breath* g, e-flat, a-flat. which i guess is fine, but just doing a g, e-flat, a-flat would have been cleaner. and why do orchestras never play the full end?

  • Her Italian seems fine to me. She has been living in Italy for nearly her whole adult lives (over 20 years). She thinks like Italian and eats like Italian and lives like Italian.

  • I think you lost just about everyone there.

  • i LOVE sumi jo... but why compare her to netrebko when they have totally different vocal styles? this performance is brilliant as always by sumi jo!!

  • Sumi Jo, Netrebko? Is this a joke comparing them in the same breath? Sumi Jo is a vocal phenomena with an innate understanding of how to place the voice and move tone in anyway that she wants. Netrebko? Some one trying to push their voice with little execution of coloratura. if she is prettier or a better actress than she belongs in the movies. When I listen to opera I want to hear someone who knows what they are doing, all the attention on netrebko is just ridiculous

  • ...you should never doubt the abilities of other singers.. at this level most of these singers can do everything the other can technically, mostly only the color of their voice varries and acting skills choose the arias for them. dont put down someone whose been claimed to play the best elvira ever.

  • i agree, and whoever the loser is that put a thumbs down on this is a little crybaby. netrebko haters need to wake up.

  • Most, yes, except Netrebko, who gets by with pouting, yelling, and vogueing her way through arias she can't, well, sing.

  • wow, how plainly ignorant.

  • Hardly. As you learn more about vocal technique, perhaps you will learn that Netrebko's is disastrous, which explains her lack of facility, her approximate coloratura, and her out-of-tuneness. Jo is far, far superior.

  • I agree that Jo has better technique, but Netrebko is like the Janis Joplin of the opera world. What she lacks in technique she definitely makes up for in entertainment value. While Jo's voice and music are the show case of the performance, Netrebko's humor and style are hers.

  • Art and entertainment, while not mutually exclusive, and not synonymous, either.

  • What a silly comment to write. You may not like Netrebko, but to say that she is disastrous is just plan ridiculous

  • Netrebko's technique IS disastrous. Try to make a notation of the vocal part from anything she sings: in terms of pitch and rhythm, she is horribly approximate in all the wrong ways. In addition, the decline of her voice (which, while never much to my ears, was a ton better eight years ago) can be attributed to her failed technique: no facility, too far back, and out of tune. She is bad on so many levels, it is exasperating.

  • Well, I guess that explains her great success. Everyone is deaf, except you:-)

  • Her "great success" is just a fad, much like how people think that Sarah Brightman is an "opera singer." Which she is not. Or how people think they can lose weight by popping pills. I have probably never seen a soprano more disastrous than Netrebko. Exhibit A: watch?v=Lj5siBaxICE People are deaf to real real talent and lack basic knowledge of musicianship, because they haven't heard true talent. Just the fads that people advertise to try to make money off of the inexperienced listener.

  • hey, now i am not a huge fan of netrebko, but please don't even bring sarah brightman into this. yuck. netrebko is a beautiful actress with an adequate lyric soprano voice, who is quite capable when she stays within her fach. she is certainly over-publicized, and she attempts roles that she should never even consider, but she is NOT on par with sarah brightman.

  • I'm not comparing Anna to Sarah; I was only trying to create an analogy similar to Anna being a fad.

  • I agree Netrebko is just insane to be touching the Bel Canto repertoire, nevertheless being hailed a goddess for doing it., but Sarah Brightman has nothing to do with Bellini or bel canto, the closest she's got to an aria are these: O Mio Babbino Caro, Regnava Nel Silenzio, Ah! Non Credea Mirarti, Ebben Neandro Lontana, Lascia Chi'o Pianga, and Signore Ascolta. She has never sang, publicly, any other arias. Is Netrebko better than Brightman? That's debatable, Brightman was awesome in her prime.

  • @xgianpatrick She's an artist, and while you are comparing her to other great singers she is a phenomenal actress. She sings because she needs music, not because music needs her. We need more people like that. Her voice makes others appreciate voices like Sumi more, but there is no reason to bash her.

  • @xgianpatrick wow man, you really hate that bitch

  • @xgianpatrick I have never heard it better said. However, she is beautiful, and I do think that is what has gotten her as far as she has come. The voice is beautiful, but the faulty technique is so blatant.

  • She isnt totally disastrous...

like to say that is like saying half a block of chocolate is really crap, but its still better than none...

LOL that is such a bad simile but anyway.

Jo is an amazing singer, her technique is better than Netrebko but netrebko isnt really shit or anything.

  • Netrebko can't sing in tune, and perhaps can't even hear what 'in tune' is. It's like nails on a chalkboard to me.

  • Comment removed

  • netrebko just doesnt have the same timbre

its like comparing josh groban to andrea bocelli

    you can hear the difference

  • That is really wonderful and unique

  • Netrebko has better phrasing, coloring, acting. I suppose acting could be excused as this is only a concert. Jo of course has a much more agile voice. But this isn't a mad scene. It's a see-how-well-I-can-sing, one-woman show.

  • I would have prefered to see Sumi Jo instead of Netrebko in that Puritani/Met Debacle. Oh well, cant change the past.

  • either her or swenson real coloratura netrebko is better with verismo

  • what was the debacle?

  • Hey people !

never compare Sumi Jo with netrebko...Sumi is far far better - maybe 10 times better - than her artistically...

Onlt Netrebko is taller and more beautiful -- that's it ! No better side I can see..

  • netrebko sounds like a man

  • To that, of course I agree with you ...

  • has she lost her voice here? what is all that wobble?

  • its called a VIRBRATO

obviously you dont know how to use yours

  • she plays too much portamento... but she is my favorite soprano. I respect her.

  • haha i have to sing that song with my music teacher

  • It was pretty, good. Anna Netrebko has better phrasing I think.

  • dont compare netrebko with her

sumi jo has technique and a voice wayyyyyyyyy above anything netrebko can accomplish

  • i love the aria at 5:10

    =D

  • Sumi Jo is without a doubt my favorite soprano. i love her technique, her crystal clear voice, and her delivery of the aria. in my opinion there is no one in comparison. unless you would like to contradict me, give me names of sopranos who are better than Sumi Jo

  • look at Anna Netrebko , she is equally as good

  • Sorry...not in the same league as Sumi.

  • i have to agree with that.

I really hate how Netrebko sings.

For some reason she sounds like a man to me

  • can anyone tell me the title of this aria

    and the lyrics please?

    sumi jo is love!

  • She is amazing and I did just listen to Gutierrez's version. I prefer this one. It is just effortless and beautiful.

  • She is great!

  • Her high note are SUBLIME!

  • bless you that was awesome

  • She is good that lady, but not in belcanto!

  • Anthony I ca see that you are korean . To much.... She is ok in bell canto I like her more in german , special in mOzart .I lake for bell canto more full voice like Callas , Monserrat, Gencer, Suderland , Scotto . Im sorry she is not bell canto voice

  • you just mad my day...has any bell canto awarded 7 major contest as the 1st prize? can u answer? Simple..it's no....has any bell canto received all major awards such as grand palmier and others in a year??

Come on..she's genius...you got 2 acknowledge it....your evaluation doesnt seem appropriate for skills and talent i'm afraid.

Having said that, she's the most talented one estimated by all, particularly her skills and control of clear high note like water

  • You know that actually in Bel Canto voices like Maria Callas were not the ideal ;) Maria is the ideal for Verismo and a great bel canto artist, but the lyrical agile voices were prefered in bel canto.

  • The best soprano..in 21ct century...no one can manage such that high note without any effort like that...unbelivably clear and accurate.....great technique...unique....splendid... I respect other artists such as Natalie, Damirau and Sunderland..but Sumi jo is the most talented one and full of technique / knows how to utilise her skills and knowledge..the best ever~~~~~~proud of you KOREA

  • What about: Anna Netrebko

  • Might you be "slightly" prejudice?

  • Truly beautiful. My favorite live performance of this aria on you tube.

  • WOW! I am always impresse dby sopranos who cam hit super high notes quietly. It is SOOOO hard!

  • the best. Nada mas que decir.

  • i dont know anyone else that hits high notes as effortlessly as she does

  • i just listened to Gutierrez's version and am blown away. you can't even compare.

  • she's amazing, but I still like Ruth Ann Swenson's version better.

  • Amen. Also check out Eglise Gutierrez's version. Beautiful.

  • their lives are music, and thats one of earth's blessings

  • I am going to her concert in Belgium tomorrow, also I Puritani! I'm looking forward!!

  • Yes! I saw her yesterday and she was everything that I expectes: beautiful and amazing! Bravo, Sumi Jo! You really blew me away with your amaaaazing voice!!BRAVO

  • beautiful, and nice rendition..!

I've never heard any others in theirs real recitals breathing as long as Sumi Jo - well.. to be honest, partly because I have limited concert & opera experiences.. However, in general, I am sure that Sumi Jo has never showed any "noticeable" shortage of breath... Rather, I sometimes think her breath is too long to be believed. IMO, differences in rendition shouldn't be confused with long or short breathing.

  • highest note of this aria " Qui la voce.." is High Eb

and Eb & D# are in the same note... ioi

  • Yes. Eb and D# are the same pitch; my question was to ascertain the key in which 'vien diletto in ciel la luna' is composed. As someone has informed me the key is Ab major it follows that the finshing dominant to tonic (cadence?) is Eb to Ab. Not D# to Ab

  • lord you people have no lives!

  • does anybody know the key of this aria? Is the top note a D# or an Eb?

  • She's marvelous & what legato singing!

  • just a little note.... why does it says at the beggining, at the low right corner G.BELLINI...wasn't his name VINCENZO?,,,

  • Yes it was. That is a bit odd.

  • speechless....

  • The shaping of her mouth is delicious... her voice is just... hot. So full, like a shimmering silver-blue... love IT!

  • She has a marvelous sounding voice. She has a faster vibrato than I am used to, and that is kind of a "turn-off" if you will, but the first person I heard to sing this song is Ruth Ann Swenson, and as far as I am concerned no one I have heard yet has even come close to comparing...though Sumi is outstanding here.

  • You are right... Ruth is incredible. I think it is the way she sings it. The "tenutos" and "alargandos" is what makes a difference and more italian style. Though I love Sumi... I like fast vibratos. For some reason I can´t explain, makes me think of a young fresh voice. Very beutiful singing.

  • AMAZINGGGGG!!!

  • she is the absolute definition of a true opera diva.

    I LOVE IT.

  • I am mad for Sumi Jo!! Just beautiful!! BRAVA!!

  • I'm in love with Sumi Jo's voice :-)

  • Fantastica...

  • damn...terrific

  • This is probably the most technically impressive and convincing versions of this I have heard/seen.

  • OH DAYUM!! Her voice HAS really darkened! I love it-I wonder if this will change her rep much.

  • BRAAVAAAAA!!

  • well, you can push, or you can project. Pushing will only make you heard in a small space. The really great singers, even those with a "small" voice (like Peters or Battle) learn how to use the orchestra as support and project their voice into the very back row of the house.

  • yeah she isn't pushing her voice like most sopranos do her size

  • Jo sounds more mature here the weight of the voice more suitably applied. Her tempi are perfect not to slow and the italian lovely. The high notes were full on and one could see her getting right into the body to support them at the cabalettas ending. Not bad for a little coloratura eh?
