i love her clear high notes and sound of her voice is beautiful when she doesnt produce vibrato with her mouth and tongue. But scales are not very good imho.
@dj12120 Yes and the sky is blue...and i think she is singing opera, do you know what does it mean?opera?anyway, i do like Sumi Jo and i only refered to his acting, i find it quite unbelievable. Thank you too (i feel better now that i know that she is "she" and not "he"...;-)

Have you ever seen Elvira staged? The only person who goes a mad at all is Netrebko. Beverly Sills herself said that Elvira's mad scene is a scene to "put your hands by your side", stand still, and sing. Besides, this is a concert setting.
I couldn't agree more, Lucia, Manon, excerpts from Norma (Casta Diva + Ah Bello, Deh Conte), Elvira. Her Traviata was ok, but others were really, as you say it BAD.
@ViennaWaltz If you read her career on wiki you will find she has sung in many big opera houses. and her voice is not small . you need to find a video of her singing with audio that does her voice justice. watch her sing delibes lakme bell son
Los dos musicos idiotas de la ultima fila de la orquesta se rieron de ella todo el maldito concierto...la verdad causa mas risa que estén sentaditos ahi en ultimo plano tocando sus instrumentitos de vez en cuando con ese aire de suficiencia...
i love sumi jo, dearly, because her voice is SOOOOO powerful, it's ridiculous. but someone seriously needs to fix her italian, i mean she's been popular for like, 15-ish years now, can she get a coach from SOMEWHERE? and she needs to work on coming into the high notes (like the e-flat at the end) because she hesitated. she went: f,g *small breath* g, e-flat, a-flat. which i guess is fine, but just doing a g, e-flat, a-flat would have been cleaner. and why do orchestras never play the full end?
Her Italian seems fine to me. She has been living in Italy for nearly her whole adult lives (over 20 years). She thinks like Italian and eats like Italian and lives like Italian.
Sumi Jo, Netrebko? Is this a joke comparing them in the same breath? Sumi Jo is a vocal phenomena with an innate understanding of how to place the voice and move tone in anyway that she wants. Netrebko? Some one trying to push their voice with little execution of coloratura. if she is prettier or a better actress than she belongs in the movies. When I listen to opera I want to hear someone who knows what they are doing, all the attention on netrebko is just ridiculous
...you should never doubt the abilities of other singers.. at this level most of these singers can do everything the other can technically, mostly only the color of their voice varries and acting skills choose the arias for them. dont put down someone whose been claimed to play the best elvira ever.
Hardly. As you learn more about vocal technique, perhaps you will learn that Netrebko's is disastrous, which explains her lack of facility, her approximate coloratura, and her out-of-tuneness. Jo is far, far superior.
I agree that Jo has better technique, but Netrebko is like the Janis Joplin of the opera world. What she lacks in technique she definitely makes up for in entertainment value. While Jo's voice and music are the show case of the performance, Netrebko's humor and style are hers.
Netrebko's technique IS disastrous. Try to make a notation of the vocal part from anything she sings: in terms of pitch and rhythm, she is horribly approximate in all the wrong ways. In addition, the decline of her voice (which, while never much to my ears, was a ton better eight years ago) can be attributed to her failed technique: no facility, too far back, and out of tune. She is bad on so many levels, it is exasperating.
Her "great success" is just a fad, much like how people think that Sarah Brightman is an "opera singer." Which she is not. Or how people think they can lose weight by popping pills. I have probably never seen a soprano more disastrous than Netrebko. Exhibit A: watch?v=Lj5siBaxICE People are deaf to real real talent and lack basic knowledge of musicianship, because they haven't heard true talent. Just the fads that people advertise to try to make money off of the inexperienced listener.
hey, now i am not a huge fan of netrebko, but please don't even bring sarah brightman into this. yuck. netrebko is a beautiful actress with an adequate lyric soprano voice, who is quite capable when she stays within her fach. she is certainly over-publicized, and she attempts roles that she should never even consider, but she is NOT on par with sarah brightman.
I agree Netrebko is just insane to be touching the Bel Canto repertoire, nevertheless being hailed a goddess for doing it., but Sarah Brightman has nothing to do with Bellini or bel canto, the closest she's got to an aria are these: O Mio Babbino Caro, Regnava Nel Silenzio, Ah! Non Credea Mirarti, Ebben Neandro Lontana, Lascia Chi'o Pianga, and Signore Ascolta. She has never sang, publicly, any other arias. Is Netrebko better than Brightman? That's debatable, Brightman was awesome in her prime.
@xgianpatrick She's an artist, and while you are comparing her to other great singers she is a phenomenal actress. She sings because she needs music, not because music needs her. We need more people like that. Her voice makes others appreciate voices like Sumi more, but there is no reason to bash her.
@xgianpatrick I have never heard it better said. However, she is beautiful, and I do think that is what has gotten her as far as she has come. The voice is beautiful, but the faulty technique is so blatant.
Netrebko has better phrasing, coloring, acting. I suppose acting could be excused as this is only a concert. Jo of course has a much more agile voice. But this isn't a mad scene. It's a see-how-well-I-can-sing, one-woman show.
Sumi Jo is without a doubt my favorite soprano. i love her technique, her crystal clear voice, and her delivery of the aria. in my opinion there is no one in comparison. unless you would like to contradict me, give me names of sopranos who are better than Sumi Jo

wow!!! eso se llama cantar!! y algunos pensamos que sabemos , mis respetos para esta mujer que ha pagado el precio para llegar adonde está. En una sola palabra ¡Excelente!
She has a marvelous sounding voice. She has a faster vibrato than I am used to, and that is kind of a "turn-off" if you will, but the first person I heard to sing this song is Ruth Ann Swenson, and as far as I am concerned no one I have heard yet has even come close to comparing...though Sumi is outstanding here.
You are right... Ruth is incredible. I think it is the way she sings it. The "tenutos" and "alargandos" is what makes a difference and more italian style. Though I love Sumi... I like fast vibratos. For some reason I can´t explain, makes me think of a young fresh voice. Very beutiful singing.
well, you can push, or you can project. Pushing will only make you heard in a small space. The really great singers, even those with a "small" voice (like Peters or Battle) learn how to use the orchestra as support and project their voice into the very back row of the house.
Jo sounds more mature here the weight of the voice more suitably applied. Her tempi are perfect not to slow and the italian lovely. The high notes were full on and one could see her getting right into the body to support them at the cabalettas ending. Not bad for a little coloratura eh?
she sings like the angel

The shaping of her mouth is delicious... her voice is just... hot. So full, like a shimmering silver-blue... love IT!

The really great singers, even those with a "small" voice (like Peters or Battle) learn how to use the orchestra as support and project their voice into the very back row of the house.

yeah she isn't pushing her voice like most sopranos do her size

Jo sounds more mature here the weight of the voice more suitably applied. Her tempi are perfect not to slow and the italian lovely. The high notes were full on and one could see her getting right into the body to support them at the cabalettas ending. Not bad for a little coloratura eh?
