I saw one of these at a swap meet in Myrtle Beach for $50. If I'd had the money, some way to get it home, and a place to put it, I would have gotten it.
my dad had one when i was a kid remember it well i was like 5 dad was standing on the top of the bike in the rafters of the garage and the bike fell on top of me lol. wish he kept it was a 175cc not sure on the year though.
I had one when I was a kid. I it bought for five bucks in the early seventies. It wasn't running. Was going to fix it up, but lost interest as a kid. My father ended selling it at the swap meet years latter, and didn't even give me any money.
Where do you live? USA? Never heard of a Breitwand. I've got all kinds of mopeds..Sachs, Motobecane,Moto Guzzi, Derbi, Whizzer, Honda, General, every Puch there is including 2 of the 50CC Sabre's sold by Sears. Some do 55MPH but aren't stock. Puchs are my favorite.
@fuxgood Breitwand is the cylinders they put on the Euro models. Extra long cooling fins, which made the cylinder look much bigger, also kept it nice and cool. Look up Puch M50Sport or Puch JPS or Puch Grand Prix on youtube. M50 Sport had twin exhausts, the Grand Prix was the fastest one available in the UK, it did a hair under 60mph. I now live in the USA
ALL the good stuff is across the pond...I use athenas mainly but found I can tune a 50cc cylinder to do 50. And i know the Grand prix. Seen pix but not in person. Puch JPS? Nope..never heard of that one. Will look up. M50 have seen here on youtube. Breitwand...CC's? 50? What size carb? 21MM? I gotta get to UK one day and go to junk yards to search.
@fuxgood The JPS was a really deluxe version of the Grand Prix with mag wheels and other nice stuff. They were all 49.9cc. When I was a kid moped law in England said no more than 50cc and must have pedals, didn't need a license (least not a real one) went to the post office filed out a form and they gave you a prov license with no test or anything.
Most people rode Yamaha FS1E, good for around 50 or Suzi AP50 good for about 60.
The fastest were the Fantics from Italy at 65 to 70mph 12hp 50cc
@fuxgood carb was usually 16mm. The Fantics, Gileras and Garelli Tiger Cross had 19 or20mm carbs. Almost everyone would take the cylinder off the 80cc version and they would hit over 70mph. The Honda SS50, people would put the C70 cylinder on it and the C90 carb, that would blow away 125 Suzuki TS and DT125 Yamahas. Back then there was no such thing as 30mph mopeds in England, at least not that a 16 year old would ride. Almost 100% of kids bought sports mopeds. Only grandads rode maxis etc
I'm an aging motorcycle racer and know all too well about the Fantics. Gileras too were from my day. Garelli tiger Cross...know that you mention it I have heard of it but will have to look it up.&0 on a ped at 16 years old. LOL..not in this country! We rode modded maxis doing 50. My goal is to one day own a pre WWII Zundapp 600...not a ped but certainly a work of art.
@fuxgood The mopeds that were in the USA were traditional mopeds, in EU they were sleeved down motorcycles with pedals to get around the law (from the factory) Look at M50's you can see that both the pedals hang down for footpegs There was a ratchet like arrangement on the left side pedal flick a lock switch and then you had one pedal up and one down, so you could pedal it. You had to put it into 5 gear hold the clutch in and pedal like mad for 1 mph. It was just to get around the law.
Like I said...ALL the good stuff in EU! So thats the set up on the M50's! We never got anything near that good here but in my day I had my motorcycle license at 14 in the state of Md. Thats as cool as we had in this country. We would port the 50cc jugs because in the early days no such thing as a kit or anything that would work on Eu bikes. At least not until the 80's when 70CC kits became available and then very expensive. Many, many thanks for all your info! :) Most interesting...
@fuxgood All of the "Sports Mopeds" from the 70ies in the Eu had the pedals set up. Some even still had the kickstart in addition to the pedals. If they didn't have a kickstart you would lift the right hand pedal up and kick forwards to start. Now they don't have to have pedals any more, but they are restricted to 30mph. However they are still real motorcycles and it takes about 20 minutes to take the restictors off. They go from 30 to 65mph on 50cc and 70 to 80 on a 70cc Athena, Polini etc
I've talked to the Dutch guys on Moped Army and they're amazing! What they do with 50CC's is incredible. They have ot down to a science and can give you the formula for how much porting you can do before you start losing certain aspects such as low end torque. Truly amazing. And have seen some of the kick start motors on EU ebay.I bought a Puch Magnum X just to get the kicker motor for one of my custom builds. Only 50CC puch kicker motor available here.
I will look you up when i get the chance. Am not a scooter guy but any fast small bore is OK with me. Hmm...maybe you could tune a Puch motor for me? I'm sure you're better than I. My kicker Magnum X motor could use a proper tuning.I just bolted up the athena reed kit, 17MM Amal and Estoril.Ran into a very weird problem too. Will have to email you bout that. Not nuff letters here...
@fuxgood Sounds good, send me an e-mail. Usually the problem with big bore kits is carbs that aren't big enough or people forget to jet up to allow for the greater cylinder filling needed. I usually use a Del Orto 21mm with manual choke.
I like anything with two wheels and an engine. See my GT380 video and my home made moped, an 80cc 2 stroke engine stuck into a Huffy beach cruiser frame. Believe it or not it does 52mph revving so hard that I think my fingers are going to fall off
They sell em at Northern tool and equipment. It goes on where the centrifugal clutch is now bolted on.
Drive face variator is in the place where the clutch used to be and then the centrifugal clutch is at the back of the transmission, and drives a sprocket for the chain to the rear wheel. Going from a single speed to CVT. 2 horsepower should get you to about 40 maybe 45 and then tune with a big DelOrto and you should see 50 or more with 50cc
@hotrodZack1948 Yes you can, look it up. It is a twingle. It had one cylinder with a seperating wall and oblong pistons with connecting rods to the same big end. They both went up and down at the same time. One cylinder two oblong pistons hence twingle. Look up up.
well its not really in the same cylinder, just the same combustion chamber. still fucking wierd though! i never seen or heard of that before in my life! crazy, thanks for the mind fuck.
@hotrodZack1948 Copy and paste the following into your browser. Of course you will need to push it all back together. It an explanation of how a twingle works along with diagrams etc. ( U Rl L is below) h t t p : / /puch 250 .wordpress. c o m/
I have myself a 1954 Puch 250 SGS like this one on the vid but with Puchs own labels. I've just restored it and it runs well I'd say. One bad thing I've heard about them around here is that it has got serious heat problems when you drive it too hard.. though I've never had problems with that myself.
Then Corvairwild was right, it is the luggage compartment on the left side which he pointed at, the battery's on the other side, though the SGA, SGSA and also the MCH models had two batteries in the "luggage" because they needed extra power for the electric start (why you now needed that on a 250).
First since I am a Steyr Daimler Puch fan, so no offense 1949kf but what you forgot to tell was that this model came 53 and by then there were no japanese models in this class who stood a chance I'd say.. but I don't know why they made it until 1970 which they did..
My brother owned a nice red Sears Allstate cycle in the 50's. Left handlebar 3 gear shift. Single cylinder but don't know what cc it was. Sears sold a lot of cycles and I think....."Monkey Wards" did too...maybe not.
The Sears Allstate 250(Puch) is a "Twingle" A 2 cylinder piston port 2 stroke with one combustion chamber. Puts out 16.5 hp at 5800 rpm. Top speed about 68 mph. I had one for a few years back in the early 70's. They were good reliable commuter bikes but were about as exciting as a cold cup of coffee. It couldn't compete with the sporty Japanese bikes which were more appropriate to the American market that wants motorcycles for sporting fun rather than economical transportation.
This bike is originaly a Puch 250 SG, SGS or SGA produced in Autria by Steyr-Daimler-Puch. It was sold in US under the name of Sears-AllState with some little changes. I have a Puch 250 SG from 1966.
Original Puch 250 SG is much more beautifull that the model sold in US.
BTW it's not the luggage compartment, it's the battery compartment.
very good find! ain't many of those around anymore. it's no wonder, how many guys wanted a Sears motorcycle? back in the day, there were some great Allstate scooters too. I wonder if they made a later version for the girls ...lady Kenmore???

It is a 250cc twingle. It has oblomg pistons one combustution chamber with a wall inbetween the two piston. Both pistons fire at the same time.
Very odd engine configuration. That is a 1968 model.
Scootertuner1000 2 years ago
Not a '68. '68's had the bread box tank. Looks like a '66.
fuxgood 2 years ago
That's right, you know your Puches. I used to have a twingle.
Scootertuner1000 2 years ago
LOL...never owned a Twingle myself. Have every other Puch you can think of though.
fuxgood 2 years ago
@fuxgood I had a VZ50 Breitwand 50cc moped with 3 gears that looked like a 200cc motorcycle
and a M50 Sport that was even bigger physically.
You could ride those with no license or anything when I was a kid (15) The VZ did about 40mph and the M50 Sport did 55mph. Not bad for a moped.

@fuxgood See my videos. Lambretta scooter with 25mm carb and 82cc Polini cylinder.
I tune scooters as a side job. 2 strokes Zuma etc, get about 65-70mph and the 4 strokes normally about 50-55, but if you go nuts then also 65 plus.
