  • Does this dude read books at the local library? because i would pay just to listen to him read a book

  • IMO, this game has amazing gameplay, so-so music, and a rather cliche story. 7.5/10.

  • shitty buggy game

  • I WANT THIS GAME DESPITE THIE REVIEW!!!! ahhh!!! Star Ocean the remake or renew version?! with new story line?! have u guys even play Star ocean the second story!? I still play it! and i love it and now i want to play this one too! cuzz im freaking into it! dang...but first need a PSP~~!!!.......drools~

  • Is there a japanese audio change option?? Cause i like to play this kind of games with japanese sound and english letters.

  • I'll stick to the Super Famicom version for this one.

  • @zedo0

The psp version pretty much improves on it in every way.

  • @TheGravitationist I just bought 2nd Evolution y'day and looks and plays great. The thing is that i've played the translated Super Famicom rom of Star Ocean and there's something about those old school graphics that I love. I may give 1st Departure a go one of these days though. I do so love my psp.

  • suscribed for havign reviewed this game. :)

  • sorry, my english isnt fluently. i would like to know if the story of the PSP version is the same as the snes version? thank you

  • heheh...rod dick.. THERE I SAID IT

  • @UltraPenguinx3 lol. i always thought the same thing

  • Im playing this right now and I finish star ocean the last hope.

  • i like his voice... its soo soooo british... thats great.

  • 'You take stuff from their chest without them even minding' >.>

  • this is the same story like star ocean 4, on the planet roak. and people got stone sickness just like reimi got it and then they went to astral to get the cure and blah blah

  • don't ever say the word roak again...

  • @Jay20023 What does roak mean? :/

  • what is the deal about the accent?

  • Why the hell did they have to change Ratix into Roddick?

The original Japanese version (yeah, you know, that one for the SNES from 1996, nothing else) say "Ratikusu", not "Rodikku", and Ratix is a perfectly fine name and looks good as well.

  • Star ocean is a game that recycles names, some characters and some times a part of the story. You should know that Star ocean: First departure is the first star ocean that came out and Star ocean: The last hope is prequel. The story isn't exactly the same though. All RPG's start with 'Let's go on a adventure!' and afterwards 'F*CK! WE HAVE TO SAVE THE WORLD!!'. The place you go to when you go back in time is the last dungeon in star ocean the last hope if you didn't know that xD

  • @Hamstergeval that's definitely true lol

  • @Hamstergeval

You don't know about the Wondering Dungeon?

  • @sharinganspog

A post game dungeon doesn't count when you're talking about a game. The last dungeon of the main story is always the last dungeon. The other dungeons like Cave of the seven stars or the wandering dungeon, isn't really considered as the last 2 dungeons.

  • @Hamstergeval

I would like to know what dungeon you are referring to exactly.

  • @sharinganspog The Palace of creation in SO4 is the start of every star ocean game, and in so3 you get their midgame for a bit. In the first star ocean they use it to send people back in time. In SO2 it teleports the main character and in SO3 they use the place to go to the 'real world' where they find out they're a 3D program.

  • @Hamstergeval

*spoilers* The Palace of Creation and the whole "planet" in SO4 got destroyed once u beat the last boss. The planet you're thinking of with the Time Gate in the planet Styx and the place where Claude gets teleported to Expel is something like Mirokemia (don't have enough time to check 'cause I need to sleep)

  • @Hamstergeval Are all SO games connected (sequels)? I heared that SO4 was a prequel to all SO games :/

Are the PSP versions the same as the old ones? (story and all)

  • hmmmm. so this is kinda like tales of eternia, only in the future

  • the story line is just like starocean 4... why is that?

  • @Genesis2099 yeah roak and the calnuis hmmm

  • @Genesis2099

*spoiler alert?* Should also mention that Lady Elayna in SO4 mentions that the Asmodeus will return and a group of heroes will fight him and that's most of the story for SO1.

  • @sharinganspog so basiclly SO just recycles story line over and over...

  • @Genesis2099

*Spoiler alert?* Well...in terms of JRPGs and such there really is only 1 story line but on the topic of SO recycling i don't believe that to be entirely true, Roak is only 1 planet that you visit and in a way ties in 1 and 4. SO2 is mainly about Ronyxs son and that's pretty much the only connection that I can really think of. SO3 is like 300-400 years after 2 with almost nothing to do with the previous ones (I think they mention Roak a few times...Oh and the "Time Gate" from 1)

  • @Genesis2099 no SO4 is a prequel, Lady Eleyna looks into the future, Roak is the main place you're at in SO1. They do use some stuff of every game though. The best star ocean will always be the first one on the snes xD

  • I love this game. My favourite characters are Iliya and Ronyx

  • Comment removed

  • This game is about a 1/3rd of the length of second evolution, but to me it seems like a hell of a lot more was put in it. Same with the 3rd game being good and and the fourth one being good if you were to strip away everything but the gameplay. So hopefully five is also going to be awesome if we go off the pattern

  • I fucking loved this game it breaks my heart that I beat it then sold my psp

  • I've only got the money for one psp game for awhile should I get star ocean 1 or 2?

  • @workingclassbum I have only played star ocean 2 and from what I can see the stories aren't exactly the same... well Ronyx J. Kenny is Claudes father from star ocean 2 and I think you should try both of them :)

  • I love this game, I liked it alot better than second story/evolution, who most ppl says s the best. This game got more enjoyavle characters!

  • its roak not ro-ak

  • @KuromametchiDUDE Yeah I checked the Japanese script and it hints towards a "roke" pronunciation - "rôku".

  • heh heh hes sounds like british naruto but good review

  • seeming like final fantasy

  • i like the games original battle system >.<

  • The game looks like a great improvement over the original, the only gripes I have with both this remake & the 2nd game remake though, are the new names of the special attacks, they completely suck.

  • I've always pronounced it "Roke".

  • Wait, the Calnus?

Is this the very same ship from Star Ocean: The Last Hope?

  • Sprites are ftw bitches!

  • If you like Japanese style RPG's then I would recommend both Star Ocean: First Encounter and the sequel game: Star Ocean: Second Evolution.

Why did the reviewer in this clip pronounce Planet Roak as RO-AK ?

I am English but even I know it's pronounced ROAK as all one word not with a pause between RO and AK.

  • it's really... really... a great game for an old-modern JRPG these days

    (i'd still prefer a 2D than a 3D JRPG nowadays)

  • Just got this today - it's a pretty weird mix of gameplay styles. Menu surfing and realtime battles (pounding the X button)...

  • What is Ro-ack? I know of the Planet Roak, but no Ro-ack.

  • @royalkingmatt I'd say it was Ro-ack too. What do you think it is "ROKE"?

  • Sprites are so fucking gay.

  • "Row Ack"? WTF? Its "Row-k"

  • British speaking sounds so gay ^^

  • mar in car er

  • is this game worth buying

  • @MrDoomydude Try the original for the SNES instead.

  • @Laurelindo The original is severely lame

  • @ExplodingCarebear I don't know... I know the original is unfinished (I think they left out an entire new world before Revorse Tower because of deadline issues) and probably a bit claustrophobic in some places (restricted world map with poor overview etc), but not exactly "lame".

  • @Laurelindo I say it's lame because it looks exactly like Tales of Phantasia, only with very dull design and soundtrack. Every town looks exactly the same, and has the same music, with exception to maybe one or two places. I'm playing it now, and it's very boring and repetitive. If I had a PSP, I'd check this remake out.

  • @ExplodingCarebear Well I do agree that it's kind of repetitive, especially in the beginning when you basically run between those first villages all the time.

  • It was almost Perfect, but the only hap was the undecorated 3D overworld.

  • I applaud Tri-Ace for integrating an innuendo in the game. "Rod-dick" LOL

  • I'm trying the Super Famicom version right now...and I like what I see. I'm definitely interested in this one for my PSP!

  • Should I get this or second story?

  • Both, but this one first.

  • @Justsmoke42O Second Story DEFINITELY ^^

  • it's not a new form of battle, in fact it's using the exact same game engine they used to make second story

  • This reminds me of Second Story. :)

  • wtf are you talking about ? its an Jrpg, its AWESOME for people who love them ( me), its beautyful and really well done, it doesnt need to be 3d to have good graphics u know ? the 2d-3d art on this game is awesome and thank god they made a sequel.

  • Whatever dude, if you think that Star Ocean sux I don't what to tell you. PSP needs more games like this so it can keep up with the DS.

  • i got this for x-mas i hope its good :P

  • I just hate the fact that they changed the names of places and even the characters,"Roddick"?Honestly!"Ratix" was a much better name!

  • I'v got to get this game!

It's where Starocean 2 came from!

  • so the diffucultly of this game..... lets say one through ten.???????? how hard this game gets because i want to play a hard rpg game.

  • play xenogears, i found that pretty hard, in all aspects

  • i just downloaded it : )

  • I love this game, but I'd definitly throw it in the Easy category.

  • just bought it todaty.

  • Till the end of time made me a fan of the series :P

I knew last hope was the first when I played it since they are just leaving Earth for the first time.

  • hes british...

  • @Stag15Carbine nooo....

  • Hey, i'm kinda wondering if you have to play the Star Ocean games in a certain order to get the story right? Or can i play them in a random order?

As a example, would it be good or would it not matter if i start with this one?

    thanks~ :D

  • It doesn't matter. The story-lines are largely separate.

  • story goes in this order...

    SO:Last Hope

    SO:First Departure

    SO:Second Evolution

    SO:blue sphere

    SO:till end of time

  • Well, the SNES one is going to bore you if you are used to newer games. SO2 was the game that got me interested in RPGs, it has a lot of elements that have been copied (or maybe it shares) such as item creation, all kinds of leveling, etc. A very complete JRPG. SO3 is kind of a mixed bag, almost a ripoff of Skies Of Arcadia without ship battles. Kind of annoyed me. I would check out the second one first. Then the first. Then SO3 and newer ones last.

  • So is this like just an Graphically enhacnced version of the NES game or is there a change in plot/worlds/envirorments

  • SNES

  • lmfao 0:57

  • I love this review its funny

  • omg love it its like a completely new star ocean 2 the second story i gota get it!! one of my fav combat systems ever

  • I just picked this up yesterday. I never played a Star Ocean game before.

  • this has been my fave game until crisis core went out...

  • agreed, loved both :)

So cool to play RPGs this well done ANYWHERE i want to play. *-*

  • this is a direct remake of the first star ocean for super nintendo

  • Do I have to play this one to understand what is happening in second evolution?

  • nah.. i played a little of first departure and go on with second evolution.. nothing to worry about..

  • Actually at first it was bit of a letdown, coz of the graphics and shit, can't hardly stomach it, but later on I found the gameplay, story and dialogues kinda fun & interesting. 2nd Evo is much better.

  • So its basically flawless, and it gets a 7/10?

    Good one

  • It's not flawless.

The combat is boring (like he said)

And it's all been seen before.

  • Just becuase it's been seen before doesn't make it bad. People still line up for the latest turn based snooze fest Final Dragon Fantasy Quest whatever turds they keep popping out month after month.

  • I think it deserves a 8-9/10 ...combat is not perfect but its better than turned base, its all about the story and itens/lvling up/skills not combat self, its not a fighting game u know ?

    for a RPG 8.5/10.

  • Your acsent is what made me watch the video :D

  • I love this game, I'm on my second play through, I never do that with games that don't feature the game plus feature

  • i jux barely got this game.

its alright so far but i kinda dont like the battle thing.

kinda overwhelmin when u got like 3 ppl in your party and u gotta fight like 6 monsters

  • what you do is you go into the abandoned mine as soon as it becomes available at the begining of the game and you do the trick of opening the disk door so no enemies appear (make sure to close it when changing screens) and pick up the armor in the mine, you end up super powerfull from the get go

  • hey have you ever thought that maybe some people like the challenge? I find games extrememly boring if u get super powerfull right away and it makes the game way to easy

  • this game could have been better if it had better graphics. the star ocean game on PS2 is one of the best games i've played

  • The graphics are fine... Nothing wrong with sprites.

  • @DilutedDreams i love lemon lime SPRITE!

  • i got star oecean till the end of time and star ocean the last hope

  • this one and the sequel play a little different since they are 2d, but I love them, those two games and valkyre profile are the best rpgs for the psp

  • lol @ 1:06 they got owned haha

  • Thanks for the spoil ;)

  • ok should i get star ocean second evolution or Star Ocean First Departure??

    plz tell me

  • my opinion get both but since you don't have to play the first SO game to get the second one then i suggest getting second evolution but on the other hand if you play second evolution and then play first departure you will feel disappointed (second evolution is better) which is why i got first departure first.

  • First Departure then get 2nd evolution. Both are great :)

  • so is this game worth buying becuae the last one for ps2 wasent all that good

  • I thought it's pronounced as Row-k, not Row-ak.

  • NO WAY!! 7 out of 10 my ass. More like 9 out of 10, this game is just that good and i not even a fanboy like many of u guys.

  • i agree, with all the praises in the review i was astonished that he gave it a 7.

  • My Score:

    9.9/10

  • I like the review, but the guys voice sounds the same the whole time.

  • Irritating?

  • I think he meant monotone but neither of you are exactly wrong.

  • No Japanese dub, not happy!

  • Well in my opinion the voices are done quite well, so I'm not disappointed.

  • Then go play the Japanese game.

  • Iv been playin this game a lot, it is really good I think, kinda like a rpg game

  • "Three" characters? You can have 4 battle members at one time.

  • How long is it?

  • It's not that long of a game. It's Like Crisis Core or God of War: COO.

But what make it worth the money is that the Psp Dosen't have that many good Games!

And the Good News is that this RPG Isn't turn Based nor heavy on the Learning curve.

  • im not one for animated games like this but would i like it, my parents got it for me for christmas??

  • I played this a little bit (borrowed from a friend) and I can say it's an amazing remake, looks beautiful and lots of other things have been fixed from the original game!

  • Looks great quite an upgrade.

  • played it, firstly i was biased to the fact its 2d and looks like something you play off from the traditional gameboy lol but with the gameplay makes up for it. very decent game.

  • Nice, concise and intelligent review there. I'm rather impressed.

  • Its a remake of Starocean 1 o.O

  • why r the people rendered in 2d?

    lol 32 bit any one?

  • Because 3D =/= better than 2D

  • You couldn't have grown up in the 90's if you did you'd respect a game like this...90's had the best RPG's ever. Look at Chrono Trigger.

  • I don't know where you got the idea that I said that I didn't respect this game. I agree with you that Chrono Trigger is an awesome game though.

  • what wrong wit sprites if it wasnt for that there be no 3d game looks fine to me

  • Star Ocean 3 was in 3d, and it looked *ugly*. (Look at Sophia trying to be sad and tell me I'm wrong.) They're returning to form, and doing a damn fine job of it too. Advanced does not always mean better.

  • because its a remake?

    idiot

  • i think he has hurt his voice

  • Got a chest cold.

  • ya i agree you do sound differnt in this review!

  • You sound different in this one.
