Any guys who has a haircut like Morrissey, I would marry them straight up. the Smiths are one of my favorite bands and I am disappointed that the youth of today enjoy such rubbish music that involves sounds only mad buy machines and voices made by auto tune. Bands like The Smiths, Roxy Music, Talking Heads etc should be appreciated more :) I'm fourteen and I was raised with this music and will definitely be raising my children with bands like The Smiths. Johnny Marr is a god, Morrissey is a god
This is Newcastle, it's cold, it's the 1980s and most music is artifical, corporate, copyist, shit or all of the above. Suddenly the Smiths arrived and the audience starts to thaw in a slow glacial way - within weeks the ripples from this performance had influenced just about every wanabee indie band in the country. There was a spark of life yet in pop music following disco, the Police, Duran Duran, music colleges, jazz funk and other attrocities of the era (not least Maggie Thatcher).
I think its fun to note in this vid how the audience are not entirely sure how to react to the Smiths performance at this stage in thier career. I was 14 when they formed and if you watch any live performance about a few months after this one, they are going nuts. Oscillating wildly for those in the know :D
Normally I don't like the Smiths, but this song and This Charming Man is pure win. I play this song on the bass, but do it using Slapping and popping. It sounds gloriously funky.
@oldpunkster which is exactly why morrissey is a complete idiot for saying andy rourke and mike joyce weren't important. its the same with nirvana, you dont realise it but its actually the bass line that musically seperates them from other bands
Many people believe Marr wrote the basslines, but it's just rumours. Rourke wrote all the basslines to compliment Marrs riffs. Marr stated at one point that Rourkes work on the Queen is Dead album couldn't be matched by any other bassist.

Thank You , Billy ( William Clemet ) Oliver the 3rd for bringing this music into my life in the late 1980s. When we were both in high school and just trying to get by in the Bronx, NYC...I miss you and I hope LIFE has treated you well. The Smiths were are bond and I hope they bring us back together someday.
@Dangunner19 Andy wrote his bass lines. He was friends with Johnny for so long he wrote in a way that would suit his style. He did, apparently, write the drum patterns. It's likely to be a rumour though, as Mike's drum patterns fit his inspirations very closely.
I'm fascinated with this Johnny Marr "riff!". Im listening to all the other musicians having a go at recreating it on YouTube, and no one can. The last half of a 4 bar riff, has completely stumped a generation.
@theylllosecontrol Because all of music is borrowed...most things have been "done" in some way or another...just look back to classical music and lots was happening then that has carried over..

Andy Rourke deserved so much more than he got in his settlement, i think it was like 80 grand? disgrace.
Mike Joyce got about what he deserved, his drumming was solid. 10% is fair i think.
