We blew up the houses because the insurgents would infilitrate them from the south, where they could not be seen from our checkpoint 300 m away. Even if the bomb had survived the subsequent blasts, the insurgents would have to dig it out of the rubble right under the noses of the US checkpoint. Not likely to happen, fruit cake.
