Poor guy looks down right goofy hangin off the side like that, must be a sports bike rider. I don't have any chicken strips on my 91 100/GS and it ain't got any rocks stuck in the tread, fuck off roading. 107,000 milesandsmiles, bust fuckin bike ever produced, gimme an airhead anyday. 50 more hp would be nice through. I passed on a chance to ride a 1200 a couple of times now, I'd like it to much. Actually I do not like the telelever front end on my 1100R, I rarely ride it.
I want a bike like this, the look i mean. does anyone know of any others like this one or the Honda Nighthawk? I want a bike that has an up right ridding position but i do not want a Harley , and i also like where the handle bars are. so does any one know of other bike like this?
If you want to hang off a bike like a circus monkey and put your knee down, the GS may not be the best bike for you. The rider has skills and the bike may be coaxed into it but it really is a mis-application of the design goal.
Why they insist on making this bike faster and faster is beyond me. I feel that much that has been done to it after the 1150 has been not only a waste of time but has brought the touring capabilities down not up. Yes, better on the road but more complex.. and dare I say nearly TOO complex. I for one would like to see them focus more on simplicity for this model rather then trying to turn it into a street bike that can only be worked on in a shop environment.
Are you nuts , riding the GS like a racer? These bikes really can stick a corner but eventually, you'll loose it and unlike your 200 pound racers , you'll get catapulted off this bike really really hard and then you'll realize these are heavy bikes. Adopting a racer style position on heavy bikes is just wrong This bike will not forgive if the rear wheel looses traction in a position like that.Oh you'll pull it off many many times but it will only take that one time for you to learn the hard way.
The GS is the best bike ever designed if you're a rider, if yer a poser then it's not the bike for you. I have a 91GS with half the hp the new one does and I woujldn't trade it for anything, me and that baby have 99 thousand miles on and we still dance the light fantastic. I just bought a 2000 R/1100/R with 4800 miles on it, it can't hold a candle to the GS, They can keep their telelever front end, forks feel way better to me and they don't hike the ass off the ground like the lever fron end.
@505197 That's fine if you like making excuses, it's called evolution, I suggest you don't try out the 2010 because you will want one, I just ordered a new one despite trying to convince myself of all the negative things you mentioned.. it's a completely different ball game these days and that 2010 torque curve is nothing short of addictive!! Front end is stable, nose diving is a thing of the past, my 2008 Transalp was like a rocking horse in comparison. Enjoy your bike but please don't slag off
People Dis BMW for nothing - they are the most stable, comfortable and confidence inspiring rides ever - I rode an F650GS across the Pyrenees in France - it was my first long ride and i totally nailed it - not because of me so much as because of the bike - stable, power on tap, comfortable and 600 KM later I was as fresh as the morning
The GS has been my weapon of choice for touring for the last 300,000 miles starting with the R100. They are just fantastic for it. Right away you realize you have left something behind when you tour. left behind is the wonder where you will get gas, left behind is carrying capacity, or the worry that you will be measuring the distance down gravel roads in dollar signs. It falls over in the mud at a camp sight.. and you say.. "I'll get it in a minute".. and finish your eggs.
For those people who like to lay crapp on BMW bikes should just take one for a ride. There are plenty of different models to pick from. There is no perfect bike for everyone. There is only a perfect bike for yourself and it may be difficult to find. To me the R1200GS does everything that I want out of a bike. Expensive? Maybe, but the extra cash is well worth it. It was the first bike marque with ABS and traction control etc. Most brands have great bikes. If you like Japanese, then buy Japanese.
I have r1200gs not A and covered 43,000km in 18 months so far. Fantastic bike. I have really short legs and got the lowered seat and its fine for me. I don't ride with my feet on the ground anyway!! It handles really bad roads and bush tracks very well. It is not a complete off-roader and was not designed for that. It is the perfect all-rounder. Touring and tight handling is great. It is not a Ducati! But manages well. KTM is better off road but seat uncomfortable and too high for short asses
@jasonsitu I am 5'7" and have dropped the GS a few times but only in my back yard and a couple of times parking. Just some scratches. I just had the 60,000 km service after riding for 2.5 years on it. I have the full set of options including traction control and dampening etc. I have a 820mm seat which allows me to place one foot firmly on the ground with a full load and passenger without a problem. I rarely ride with my feet on the ground. It is so well balanced. Just gain some confidence.
@twodozeneggs standard seat on my KTM adv 2009 is shallower in padding than my x-2006 GSA. Nevertheless, I 've done 700 km a day and could go much more on the KTM than on BMW's seat. It seems that the contours of the KTM fit me better than the flat-and-fat BMW design. Don't ask me how or why it's a personal fact....
BTW my GSA blew itself up with only 24k KM on the clock, then after the fix under warranty the dif bearings went out. That was it for me, traded it in for the KTM and for the hooligan riding I'm doing it's the perfect bike all-around...and I mean all-around not just paved or well set gravel...Story's on ADVrider....
BMW GSA is for rider who enjoy long distance touring and add in some offroading along the journey. Have said why not KTM 400 for offroading.? Isn't that lighter, better control and not so costly toy. Cheers
I used own a GS but I have gone orange (KTM Adv). If it is off-roading you want but KTM Adv beats the GS everytime. However, the GS or GS Adv is a good touring bike, but have said that why not a RT?
@TheRealRiderbob The big GS and GSA handle the unpaved roads much better than the RT does. Sure the GS and GSA are not trail bikes, but work well in adventure touring where you will be on both paved and non-paved roads. Can you take an RT on dirt roads? Sure you can, but you stand a better chance of damaging it. The GS products are the tour any road bikes. The RT is the tour the paved world bike.
guys Bmw is using the same engine (inline 4)as the japanese companies because it fucking works. you want then to make inferior bikes just so you can say "ohh its original?"

why do the BMW touring motorcycles are damn ugly? The only right motorcycle they produced is the 2010 BMW S1000RR which they copied from the JAPANESE.
@rheaMDC21 Surely you cannot claim that a motorcycle company that has been around since 1916 copied the Japanese when they didn't start making motors let alone motorcycles until the late 1950's.
@number1Schumacherfan --- i am not talking about the motorrad. I am talking about the LITER bike design they copied from the Japanese. INLINE4 cylinder used by the JAPS. Now, BMW put one onto their S1000rr.
@rheaMDC21 By your theory then, the Japanese auto industry copied the Germans because they use fuel injection and ABS on their cars which is technology the Germans invented. It makes no sense.
@watanabehefuml Maybe so visuallly but the motorcycle itself is built almost 100% in house by BMW. And from what early reports say, it beats the Japanese bikes at their own game. Even watch the MCN report on youtube.
Being the owner of a 2009 GSA I am very interested to read this report. I know MP had an 09 as a long term bike so he should be able to give an expert opinion on the old and the new bikes.
Why would you have a tester ride that BMW like it was a sportsbike (check his seating position/ cornering lean)?

GS riders don't hanging off on their GS because of weight location which is located very much center of the bottom.
