If I may seek your counsel on something, I have been trying to make sense of the Rifts rules for ages. I absolutely love the setting and the potential, I don't care that the OCCs are, perhaps, too detailed, I just want to play the damn game.
I get stuck about where the base to-hit roll for anything is 5+ on a D20. I suspect I'm Doing It Wrong. Because otherwise it is virtually impossible for any character to miss any target, thereby making the rolling of the dice invalid...?
Nothing wrong with playing RIFTS and enjoying it. The setting is one of the best in Role-playing, but to ever dare say the game mechanics are not broken is pure insanity. Sure, its playable, but generally only with house ruling. I'm a huge fan of Palladium, but mostly for their settings and ideas. I'd prefer a more streamlined, updated game system, but the setting just can't be beat.
I'm about to start up a Rifts campaign with two newbies and two veterans. Should be a great time! Once this quarter is over, character generation shall begin! Anyway, I first started playing Rifts in the late 90's, and I've never had an issue with MDC. Rifts isn't about balance, it's about awesome. And rock. And metal!! It's like a Death-Thrash metal band playing their hearts out on a speeding demon-train careening through an apocalyptic wasteland...and all of that is on fire! RIFTS!!
@fean77 miniatures could be really hard to use in some instances especially with things like the glitter-boy's haveing a 2 mile attack range lol
out of any game i played rifts is by far my fav i like the idea of starting as the skills are being transcribbed except people might be more prone to take a skill that they need as the easy way out instead of working with the skills they have
i have EVERY occ in my books wrote in alphabetical order and stats required makes picking a bit faster
@6661313 most ranges are past boards. they just like a real feel to ranges in this system. i agree rifts was in my top list too. the group i have now is d&D wait more D&D 3.5 wait more d&D 3.75 arg. i'm so D&D out that even the Conan remark look of less interest. lol i'm good at fast chr cause played most of there systems yet it the cheaters and rolling dice i kinda dislike to play with my current group.
@McMahonHater Not formally, we played around with the time of Joseph Prosek the First, and made the MDC weapons pretty well not existant. The Coaltion were very much adorned and equipped like the trooper from the underwhelming action flick SOLDIER starring Kurt Russell.
Respond to this video... Good video about the game, with info for it. You can also mix it up by adding super heros, magic, and aliens. That's the way I like to play it. I also like to mess with people using hypnotic suggestion to make a CS grunt wet his pants.
RIFTS was what introduced me role playing games back in 97 (I live in Southeastern Michigan, less than 15 minutes from Palladium's offices), so I am definitely a fan of Palladium Books. But RIFTS absolutely does have balance issues. The setting is awesome, but to be honest it has sort of gotten out of control with each new World book released. Not to mention the Palladium game system is severly outdated. I wouldn't say its broken, but its a system that benefits heavily from houseruling.
I love the idea behind Rifts, but for some reason I just can't get my head around the rules. I am hoping to start my players off as NEMA "Silver Eagles", in Chaos Earth, and at some point have them go through a Rift and travel 300 years into the future.
@StrifeTriggerDude: Don't worry about the sit-down group, game via Skype or similar chat program. You could form a group yourself as the GM and then draw interested folks you know, even if they have never gamed before. In fact I prefer noobs, veterans tend to be a little snobbish for no good reason when it comes to new games.
My favorite game that I played in was a group of Ferrel Dog Boys. Our whole group played them, best game ever. I do agree that people have a lot of issues coming from D&D. There is no ECL and challenge rating for a GM to use, he/she needs to really understand what the monster is capable of and what can the party handle. The sad thing is I'm out of gamers. They've either moved or graduated. Looking for a new group now.
@JRCOBRA2001 Sorry for late reply, the best option I would say would be the Palladium Books website, between the forums and their own chat based Rifts games they run, it's a nice diversion when you cannot set up a sit down group.
plz help me i want to kno how i can get people into role playing games rifts and d and d imma noob but i played like 2 campaigns and their really fun any advice?
@tbirdtman mostly with rifts to make a good campaign you must learn of the world of rifts and the different groups within it, even i dont know everything about it msg if you wanna know more
@fean77 miniatures can be used. In some instances we preferred to use them for large gang fights so we could figure out things like cover, groups of npcs or PC's. Explosion and how damage is to be distributed

I have been waiting for a workable version of Rifts for some time.
I can't see it forthcoming.

@RagingDemonsRPG Chaos Earth is almost 300 years before the Prosek era, but the idea sounds cool.

Have you tried mixing the RCC and OCC? I made a Kreeghor Samurai.

Not yet but it has pre-rifts equipment that I would like to use in rifts.
