In John Newton's day a young seaman went to sea very young...maybe 11 or 12...(after losing his Moma at age 7). He was expected to buck up and be a man very young. Life was hard for all but a very few people ...and even those people could be wiped out in a day by a pneumonia or a difficult child birth. Struggle was pretty much the order of the day...especially on the old continent where those with lands and titles may or may not treat the less endowed fairly.

I'm probably as informed of the cultural differences of black and white people as you're going to find. When I was young and still living in the country, people were people, we helped each other, regardless of race. I've had many meals with good friends of both colors at my dinner table. Uninformed? We spent the night back and forth, my childhood baby sitter was old "Ms. Mamie" with sky blue hair and in her 80's when I was a child. Our families helped each other gather hay before the rains, and helped mourn the dead. "Visiting" is what we called going to each other's churches.
