I always wonder how much overlap there is between Mark Knopfler the man, and some of the characters he creates, the "narrator"s singing the song.

But at the same time, I can't bring myself to listen to any interviews or read too much biographical material about him.

I get the feeling I don't really want to know -- that some of the magic might get lost if I knew too much of the reality.

Can someone pls tell me I'm not the only nutcase who feels this way about his work?

I hear - and see - a lot of Mark's musical Americana in that piece. It's a wonderful journey, like Mark's work!

Love MK's singing and playing, but what I like most about his songs is that they are all narrative gems - Mark is telling a story in all of them, and they all have different characters in different situations - Mark never resorts to simplistic old "I love you/you love me" "I don't love you any more / you don't love me any more" clichés. Each song has its own narrative and musical atmosphere. Great musician, great storyteller, and a great guy. Makes me proud that he grew up in Newcastle:-)

Knopfler is one of the "geat" gtr players, who can play in any genre that he chooses. This song puts me in mind of Gordon Lightfoot. I love the Celtic flutes here, as well.
