Actually a lot of real life engineers were inspired by Star Trek. Trek created ideas and Engineers saw them and through how to really do them. The guy who created QuickTime was one of them, inspired by Mr. Data's computer-based music collection. WIlliam Shtner did a documentary on this. Also Cell Phone designers were inspired by Original Series communicators, Motorola's "Star Tac" flip phones were close in profile to them.

Dislike. handheld computers with just a screen for control have been concived of much longer than apple's concept, and even TNG, all the way back to the original star trek and forbidden planet.
