The comments posted in this video are some of the dumbest I've ever read. There is obviously no lip synch. She is singing the final note in harmony with her back up, who carry the note on even after she finishes and begins talking. You can clearly hear the layered effect of the harmony, and note how it becomes less robust when Donna stops singing.
I think the probs with editing have caused the lip synching effect, if this was pre-recorded Donna would have done a better job. Not to besmirch her performance which is great but her studio recordings are perfection. Love You Donna
WOW! Donna Summer is truly amazing!! What an excellent gift and talent that GOD Almighty bestowed upon her! I am glad HE did, otherwise WE would NOT have Donna Summer!! BRAVISIMO Donna Summer!
Lip-sync? Doesn't matter in the end, because of one important point; If she was indeed lip-syncing, itr was to her own voice. Hello? And BTW- she was not. I have seen her live 3 or 4 times. Her ability and power are unmatched. She comes from gospel roots and the church. You BETTER be able to sing! LOL
She isn't lip synching...She is lip synching...!...so what...? perhaps it is a problem of the video...No matter...! She´s the Queen...that´s all...!! or what...? ;-))

I love everyone for this is the will of God. I mean no harm with this comment. Donna Summers is a gifted and talented Lady. Whitney Houston is also a talented and lovely Lady. All of us make mistakes over and over. "How many times shall a man forgive man...?" Remember in the music industry, be careful not to compare. Donna Summers has been underrated. Being an interpreter, I must agree with commentator "broke 2471". The song was great, but there was lip syncing during the song.
@siciliansummer - I beg to differ...@3:43 when she's hitting that note and suddenly stops before the note ends, she's lip syncing...and it's okay to Lip sync, we know she has a power house voice so don't get offended, I still give her props.
@broke2471 I worked as part of Donna's tour crew for over 10 years. I can assure you she never, ever had prerecorded tracks while perfoming...ever. I've worked with many singers over the years and she is the best. She is something special, that woman...
@pinayho - That's all good and fine, but I know she's an extraordinary talent, my thing is, I saw her lips on this clip and we can debate all day, but she was lip syncing on that song. Again, I know she's a very talented singer and I don't take anything from her even if she was lip syncing on this song, but u may have worked for her tour crew at some point in your life, but on this particular session, u weren't there and she was indeed lip syncing....Sorry. @broke2471 Nah,not lip synching...she had (and look at the very last note!!) a backing singer provided the note for her!!I was juss SHOCKED when i see that,as i know Donna can actually still sing...but this is RIGHT HERE TO SEE!!!!)
I've always love Donna's gospel filled voice...it's sad that the industry puts these performers in a box and leaves them in one genre of music, because she has one of those voices that could've done so many wonderful genre's that would've brought her even more success. I would have loved to have seen her do a gospel cd, as well as a strictly R&B cd and a pop cd...but breaking out of the disco era was hard for her to do.
I'm really surprised that she can sing like that for i only knew her as the "Disco Queen" like most people know her as, but her version of this classic song is really good and the arrangement is beautiful, and who was her keyboard player.?? they got a great touch, whoever it was they can play..!!
Donna took this song to another level. She is my absolute most favorite female singer of all time. This rendition proves everything. She is simply awesome.

If you remember Donna being considered a "Whitney of the Seventies" as per bla2706's original quote vs. a Disco Diva, even toward the end of that decade, then we simply have different memories.
There was Diana Ross, Dionne Warwick, Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight and a host of other R&B/Pop singers who had a much firmer grip on that category.
You're right, i don't remember Donna being the Whitney of the seventies because Whitney wasn't even around then. i just remember her being one of the biggest acts during that era surpassing all you have mentioned regardless of the category.
Everyone has their opinions! If you go back to when Whitney debuted with "You Give Good Love," she was compared by many critics to Donna Summer. The 70's were musically defined by disco. Donna Summer was unquestionably the queen. None of the others mentioned were.
Donna is a first rate Diva with an amazing voice of which she has maintained;I love Whitney;unfortunately her voice has been damaged by the drug use;Donna has never been given her due because of disco;she has a great theatrical voice thats underated accept to her fans;she will be one whom will be rememered for holding it all together and will make an exit with dignity unlike so many others; her talent, beauty and grace endures-go Ms.Summer.
Donna was a lot of people in the 70's, and many of us, even in the 70's knew she was much more than a disco artist.
One key difference between her and Whitney, is that Donna continues today as a power house concert draw thanks in part to her voice, and to the repore Donna has with her audiences. Whitney has a lot of work to do to re-build her concert audiences, and I do wish her well.
Okay, People can compare this one & that one & say oh she's better then her & blah blah blah... When they start that crap tell them to come here, close their eyes & listen very carefully. I rest my case... Donna you are an angel with a voice like no other.
SO TRUE, I could not have said this any better. I get so sick of people comparing one to the other. Summer is in a league of her own. IMHO very FEW vocalists out there could match this on their best day. Anyone that says DS cant compete with any contemporary artist out there, link them here, I promise you, this performance will change that. Funny thing is: She "DS" herself said, singing this was a piece of cake. I'm convinced
a cake left in the rain which she has lost the recipeeis not wht i call good material gfco321! I really think tha she is the greatest female vocalist today, no one can come even close to her , but she hasn't done yet the album that her talent deserves
WOW.....!!!... where were these Summer performances in her hayday and PRIME....!!!????.... this disco diva could truly sing and I remember her saying that too....!!!.... WOW...!!!...under-appreciated but among the top singers in the world for sure....:-)
wow, she mskes me fall in love of her every time i hear her singing. I think we are very lucky to have seen a lady so talented like this and still have her among us.
outstanding!!!!! Donna, live, at the prime of her voice - absolutely - loved - it. I LOVE to hear Donna really belt one out like this - thank s for sharing this!
She is far better than Whitney ever was. And I repeat WAS. Her voice is natural. There has never been any formal training unlike Madonna—who still cannot sing. This has nothing to do with being a fan. It's about having ears.
ok first i'm not a whitney fan i just acknowledge anyone who sings. I like Donna, she can do better than this. But to say whitney has no tempo like greatest love of all...i assume you are talking about her live performances? Its called milking, phrasing, and more technically rubato which means there is no tempo. She DOES go into tempo when its time and her runs can't be more perfectly on tempo/pockets. Yes I don't always like when she milks a song but all singers have a choice.
please look up the greatest love of all by george benson ( thats tempo & thats the way that song should be sung ) sorry but i just dont beleave that whitney has 1/4 the talent donna does but to each there own
what you call tempo is now what's call pocketing, rhythm, phrasing. But yes i knew bensons before hers. Never said whitney was better than donna or worse. And how a song SHOULD be sung is a matter of taste
The best vocal of "The Impossible Dream" ever. If you don't have to look at Donna. "To run where the brave dare not go" complete with silly marathon running gestures. Stand still and sing, Donna.
Vocally, brilliant. Visually, cold and calculating.
maybe its not so easy to sing such a ballard.. and maybe she was very concentrated to sing the right tunes... and it was live...it´s not cold or calculating.... she was just very concentrated... in my opinion...
She might have been one of the biggest disco stars but she was never hailed as a vocalist on the level of Whitney or Aretha, which she deserved to be.
i guess thats true, but you have to remember she did record a duet with another great singer barbara streisand, i dont think she would have recorded it if she was as underrated as you say...there are very few vocalists that can hold their own to barbara, disco or otherwise.
Just shut your eyes and listen. Vocally, this is one of the most beautiful renditions of this old warhorse you will ever hear. Imagine what it could have been had Giorgio Moroder produced it. What Donna Summer lacks in visual sophistication (clenched fists on the line, "To fight the unbeatable foe") she triumphs vocally.
This is the best version of this song that I have heard yet. Unbelieveable vocal performance from Summer. Luther Vandross's version is definately worth checking out, that man can sing his ass off with ease.
The looks thing is just a matter of personal preference. If LoveTheSupremes likes a babydoll type like Diana Ross, I don't imagine he (?) would like a strong woman such as Donna. Diana never did much for me, though.
Donna never gets enough credit for her vocal talents, this woman can sing her ass off. I think she is very attractive, always have been. Whitney and Mariah are great singers but I think Summer is even better though.
Donna...I grew up in the 60's and 70's dancing to your music. This is the first time I have seen you do this number. I am now 60 years old and have fallen in love again. This recording is so clear over U-tube and you are fantastic.
Appearance? Damn, Donna Summer is a lot more attractive than Diana Ross in my opinion. Summer looks like a woman, Ross looks like a skinny boy dressed like a woman...
I can't believe you "its" are arguing over what sex should sing this song. Puhleeez. Diana Ross and the Supremes sang this song on television in the 1860's and did a fantastic job of it, just as Miss Summer is doing here. Not feminine like Diana Ross and looking more like a man in drag than a woman, Donna's voice knocks the socks of today's Diana Ross anytime. What Donna doesn't have in appearance, she makes up for with voice.
What are you talking about Diana at her peak, Donna still at her peak,Diana had a sweet voice. Never could you put her in Donnas league. I also happen to feel Donna was hot
LoveTheSupremes, didn't your mother teach you that if you can't say something good about a person, don't say anything at all? Also, please get your eyes checked!
What an amazing vocal performance - she nails it! Linda Eder also sings the heck out of this song on her Broadway CD. But nothing compares to this. Go Donna!
She is not lip synching at the end of the song. First in the recording there is a time delay with a outside recorder. Second what you heard are her backup singers(her sister Mary) Who during a two hour concert allowes her to pace her self and save her voice
OK First there is a time delay with outside recordings. Second it her backup singer (Mary her sister) you are hearing. During a two hour concert it allows her to pace herself and save her voice for the big notes
Donna Summer does a stunning job with the live vocals on this song. And duh whoever said the arrangement of the song was too Las Vegassy for their tastes. THAT'S THE TYPE OF SONG IT IS, YOU SILLY. Donna Summer got her start in theatre not 70's disco music. so it doesn't seem odd for us "OLD FARTS" that she'd be singing this kind of material.
The arrangement is Vegassy because that's the type of song it is. Summer does a magnificent job with the song. She is a supertalented artist whose flame petered out much too quickly. Lloyd
The arrangement and presentation are a little too Vegas-ey for my taste, but Donna sounds awesome. She should record an album of show music and standards; that's where she started (musical theater), and she clearly enjoys singing this kind of material.

Kind of missed her lipsync at the end.

She has a natural gift, Donna started singing gospel at 10 yrs old. Has she had training of course they all have voice treachers even Aretha.

jdee7300 3 years ago 3
She is far better than Whitney ever was. And I repeat WAS. Her voice is natural. There has never been any formal training unlike Madonna—who still cannot sing. This has nothing to do with being a fan. It's about having ears.
badpappy 3 years ago 2
hey brother they are twins you are not the man whatta you know they are both divs bromista
jokerlately 3 years ago
I wouldn't say that she is better than Whitney. BUT: I do think that they are both very good at singing!

whitney ruins everything she sings.. she has no tempo. look up greatest love of all by George Benson if u think im kidding
worm60 3 years ago
I agree.
richardskerr 3 years ago
ok first i'm not a whitney fan i just acknowledge anyone who sings.
JoelPopcountertenor 3 years ago
please look up the greatest love of all by george benson ( thats tempo & thats the way that song should be sung ) sorry but i just dont beleave that whitney has 1/4 the talent donna does but to each there own
worm60 3 years ago
what you call tempo is now what's call pocketing, rhythm, phrasing. But yes i knew bensons before hers. Never said whitney was better than donna or worse. And how a song SHOULD be sung is a matter of taste

great song

That one-and-only VOICE is still there. Wish Donna could find a contemporary producer to harness it and deliver it to us big-time.
Close your eyes and LISTEN! This is as fine as it gets.
Please, Donna: One more kick-it-out-of-the-ballpark drop-dead album before you "retire."

The best vocal of "The Impossible Dream" ever. If you don't have to look at Donna. "To run where the brave dare not go" complete with silly marathon running gestures. Stand still and sing, Donna.
Vocally, brilliant. Visually, cold and calculating.
No wonder her career's gone where it's gone.
But, my God, incomparable vocals!
Forever and always.
Robertogee 3 years ago
maybe its not so easy to sing such a ballard.. and maybe she was very concentrated to sing the right tunes... and it was live...it´s not cold or calculating.... she was just very concentrated... in my opinion...
she is one of the greatest....

Listen to the two big notes at the end. Donna loses her pitch during "un-reach-ABLE." Then her backup singer steals the note on the word "STARS."
Donna is amazing, but she doesn't hit the notes at the end of the song. I hope she fired that backup singer for showing her up like that.
phenomenal34 4 years ago
During a two hour concert you voice can get break; the backup singer is her sister Mary. HELLO
jgg59 4 years ago
Nope. The video is not in synch. That is clearly her voice.

Donna Summer must be one of the most underrated singers of all time. This is awesome!
radiance65 4 years ago 2
shes really not underrated. her star shined very bright in the 70s, everyone knew she could sing.
discoguy79 3 years ago
She might have been one of the biggest disco stars but she was never hailed as a vocalist on the level of Whitney or Aretha, which she deserved to be.
radiance65 3 years ago
i guess thats true, but you have to remember she did record a duet with another great singer barbara streisand, i dont think she would have recorded it if she was as underrated as you say...there are very few vocalists that can hold their own to barbara, disco or otherwise.
discoguy79 3 years ago
We are basically on the same side here. We both think she is AWESOME!

Robertogee 4 years ago
This is the best version of this song that I have heard yet. Unbelieveable vocal performance from Summer. Luther Vandross's version is definately worth checking out, that man can sing his ass off with ease.

And yes, you are so sexy!
Thanks for posting this.

The looks thing is just a matter of personal preference. If LoveTheSupremes likes a babydoll type like Diana Ross, I don't imagine he (?) would like a strong woman such as Donna. Diana never did much for me, though.
wcotton 4 years ago
Donna never gets enough credit for her vocal talents, this woman can sing her ass off. I think she is very attractive, always have been. Whitney and Mariah are great singers but I think Summer is even better though.
SupermanFLL 4 years ago
Such a resonance in her voice. Never got enough credit for her vocal skills.

One of the best versions ever of this powerhouse song. Vocally, Miss Summer's remarkable.
Robertogee 4 years ago
Donna...I grew up in the 60's and 70's dancing to your music. This is the first time I have seen you do this number. I am now 60 years old and have fallen in love again. This recording is so clear over U-tube and you are fantastic.
LooCroozer2 5 years ago
Appearance? Damn, Donna Summer is a lot more attractive than Diana Ross in my opinion. Summer looks like a woman, Ross looks like a skinny boy dressed like a woman...
Waldo99 5 years ago
I can't believe you "its" are arguing over what sex should sing this song. Puhleeez. Diana Ross and the Supremes sang this song on television in the 1860's and did a fantastic job of it, just as Miss Summer is doing here. Not feminine like Diana Ross and looking more like a man in drag than a woman, Donna's voice knocks the socks of today's Diana Ross anytime. What Donna doesn't have in appearance, she makes up for with voice.
LoveTheSupremes 5 years ago
What are you talking about Diana at her peak, Donna still at her peak,Diana had a sweet voice. Never could you put her in Donnas league. I also happen to feel Donna was hot
jgg59 4 years ago
LoveTheSupremes, didn't your mother teach you that if you can't say something good about a person, don't say anything at all? Also, please get your eyes checked!

You must be blind. Both women are very attractive. Donna Summer has such a beautiful aura unlike anyone else...

What an amazing vocal performance - she nails it! Linda Eder also sings the heck out of this song on her Broadway CD. But nothing compares to this. Go Donna!

She was not lip synching, one of her background singers was singing with her in the end. Donna stopped and the background continued.

drayisgreat 5 years ago
She is not lip synching at the end of the song. First in the recording there is a time delay with a outside recorder. Second what you heard are her backup singers(her sister Mary) Who during a two hour concert allowes her to pace her self and save her voice
jgg59 5 years ago

LoveTheSupremes 5 years ago
I like Luther Vandross' version. Also Connie Francis does a good version.

Donna does a Beautiful version of this powerful song.
musicmaze 5 years ago
The arrangement is Vegassy because that's the type of song it is. Summer does a magnificent job with the song. She is a supertalented artist whose flame petered out much too quickly. Lloyd
Greyliner 5 years ago
When did it peterout she has been touring and selling out all over the country. She has a new CD in the spring. She has never sounded better.
jgg59 5 years ago
The arrangement and presentation are a little too Vegas-ey for my taste, but Donna sounds awesome. She should record an album of show music and standards; that's where she started (musical theater), and she clearly enjoys singing this kind of material.
