It was definitely a cottonmouth. I killed one in my front yard tonight and one in my pool. All within an hour. I have a 2 1/2 year old daughter who plays outside and I can't risk catching and letting these things go not knowing if they're going to show back up.
There's a pond out behind my neighbor's backyard and apparently it slithered into our pool during the night before? We have an in-ground pool and I run the pump at night. The waterfall attracts a lot of frogs, etc. When we moved into the house 3 years ago there was a large turtle with flippers swimming around. Eventually he got stuck in the skimmer and I had to use a recycle bin to get him out and set him free. There's also nature preserve behind our home.

I was letting the dog out when I walked by it. It was laying on top of the water coiled up with it's mouth gaping wide open at me. I used the pool net and extension to get him out. I smacked it on the pool deck a few times inside the net before using a roofing shovel to finish it off. I had one today slither towards me in my driveway and it tried to get in my garage as the door was closing. They are very deadly snakes and unfortunately, we've got a huge problem with them here. Had one in my pool too.

Thats a really interesting observation, since I've dealt with vipers in south Texas and in the swamps of Florida, and I've certainly had a lot of experience with "all varieties of pitvipers". I don't recall a single one of them coming after me or being "extremely aggressive". And clarify this for me, when you say "attack" you mean bit a child or dog out of defense right? That's what I thought. People who get bit are too close- snakes don't come bite people who are sitting on the couch.
