If this was the UK, if that car was uninsured and parked on Her Majesty's Highway, you as the owner would be in breach of the law and the vehicle would be removed and impounded. If you park it on a public road and it gets destroyed by a tree, that serves you right.
The car's registration was up to date thereby making it legal to sit on a public road in California. If it was driven uninsured there would be a problem. Fortunately, the good law abiding citizen my friend is, that never happened. I'm glad you shared though... I always like to learn things about other parts of the world.
