Walla's jump at 3:45 gives me goosebumps every time. For a man who's always so well reserved, seeing him that worked up over a track really stands out.
i mean, i like to listen to the song, it sounds good to me, but when i pay attention to the lyrics i always think: "WTF?"
but i don't think the same thing applies to soul meets body... i love this song... maybe i don't understand it in the way ben was thinking when he wrote it, but at least i can think of some meaning, its lot like bend to squares
I personally love all of death cabs albums i really think that every album is as good as the last. I think narrow stairs was a daring step for them and it was not typical death cab but it was still fantastic. I really listen to the words that death cab sings and they have drastically improved over the years and narrow stairs is just a cd of PURE poetry so i absolutely love it. just my opinion. Love this song too!
That's all I'm trying to say: they've improved. I mean, they're one of my favorite bands on the planet, but Ben has even said that he doesn't like his older songs as much because he doesn't even know what they're about. He's says it's just a bunch of rambling, abstract junk.
Either that or you completely misinterpreted what he said.
The Photo Album is a complete masterpiece, a true story from beginning to end, it's not rambling abstract junk.
And no, They have not improved. You can't say "Meet me on the Equinox" is a good song. It sucks. So does No Sunlight. If you want an example of a song that doesn't make any sense, That would be soul meets body.
These were his exact words: "I'd like to think that I'm a far better writer now than I was ten years ago. When we started this band, I was convined that my writing was wildly descriptive and interesting. But now I play a song like 'Bend to Squares', and it's like 'What the fuck am I talking about here? This song makes absolutely no sense. I would write what i thought were very profound lyrics, but they don't translate into being about anything anyone can understand just listening."
And I'm not talking about The Photo Album. I'm talking about shit like "Amputations" and "Sleep Tight".
And yeah, I'm not a fan of "Equinox". But "Grapevine Fires" communicates something that people can understand. "Title and Registration" is about something concrete. Gibbard isn't Bob Dylan. He can't vomit on a piece of paper and have people call it genius.
I love Death Cab For Cutie, and because of Ben's writing, but I'm sick of stupid people being so "touched" by songs about nothing.
Sorry after reading my comment, It sounded like I was being an A-Hole. Not trying to give you that vibe, just an opinion which all of us are entitled too.
I do stand by my statement though.
And I do think Narrow Stairs was a daring step, unfortunately I took at as a step in the wrong direction.
Chris Walla wants to do something else in the next album, maybe about as much production as the Photo Album, but not as Live as Narrow Stairs. And he wants Ben to spend more time writing the next one.
jesus, every version of this song is amazing, live and on cd. they should take out some of the more dull songs from narrow stairs from the setlists and start playing this again, it'd be good to pair this up with bixby.
Ya i Agree with you... But there new E.P. Is better than the Narrow Stairs album i think - Of course i understand what many bands have to do to stay alive... it means evolving and the fact that they kept themselves and still made a decent album despite it being so experimental was awesome. I do hope that they make such extraordinary art again though, as they did with the "You Can Play these songs with Chords" album
I agree completely. I LOVED the Chords album, from Chords to The Photo Album are amazing, my favorite Death Cab era. Transatlantisism rocks, Plans is my least favorite, and I like Narrow Stairs. I still love the old sound to most though. Hope they go back to that.
You know why I love DCFC? They are the garage band's dream come true, and I say that with total respect. They are the ideal American band. They went from just two poor guys in a dorm room to having the #1 album in the country, and they did it just by loving what they do and working hard at it. It took a long time, but they found success. If that's not enough, they're still able to make great music while being the best of friends. They live the life every musician wants. It's totally inspiring.
lol it does seem like nick is drunk lol at the end he stumlbes off stage.. and chris like trashed his guitar lol... i never thought i would see DCFC trashing their instruments lol! awesome song though!
I love how they can be flailing all over the place and then sit back and just chill. There is no other band that can even compare to death cab for cutie- nothing that you find in a long time. period.

about a year ago when i first watched Drive Well Sleep Carefully this was my favorite song from the video and after watching it again i realized it still is, one of my favorite death cab and ben gibbard live moments after underwater and his cover of palmcorder yajna

The songs suck, the production sucks, and it's not "them". It's all Gibbard not knowing what he's doing. Their later stuff is so much better.
