Nice job repeating a talking point. Obama has engaged in more deficit spending than all other Presidents and Congresses combined. He has engaged in the largest corporate welfare package in history.
Obama is for subsidizing health care companies making them the middle man (corporate welfare). Obama bailed out banks and corporations (corporate welfare). Obama and those with influence in the state are still bombing Pakistan, Iraq is still being occupied, and he wants to expand the troop levels in Afghanistan. Obama is not for gay marriage and I believe he is for hate speech laws.
I'm not an atheist (or a theist either, I'm a non-theist who doesn't care if God exists or not) but my favorite atheist was Carl Sagan. He was kind but rational and skeptical but also open-minded. He was also a citizen of the universe. He, to me, embodied what an atheist humanist should be. But when it comes to dealing with Fundies I prefer Dawkins to go to work over Hitchens.
if anyone watched i love money 2 on vh1, doesn't mos def remind you of It in this episode?? He might have smoked some of Bill's weed before this episode.
Why do most of u think either hitchens or mos def have to be wrong i happen 2 both of them had very insightful opinions that rang true 2 differnt motivations people have for religion & what we can describe as religion. Just bcuz some1 is a rapper does not mean they are uneducated even if u dont agree w/ def he is obviously intellegent. & I dont think hitchens was a rude asshole bcuz of his beliefs either. Every1 hereis playing n2 ssterio types when these things only take away from each argument
I disagree. I wouldn't characterize Mos Def's opinions as "insightful". I felt they were purely emotionally rooted and driven by complete ignorance. He supported his asinine conclusions with fairy tail fiction based on his preconceived bias.
Fuck Mos Def. Everything in the world is not politically and anti black motivated. He should be worrying about how no one listens to his music, not how everything is a shot at blacks.
Soo Right Man, I wont even tell you my skin color cause the shit dont matter. Mos Def, man the guy is just a dishonor to rational thought. What pisses me off is his attitude toward our military by takin the sides of our enemies that ARE in Iraq Were in Iraq before us, and they are Al Qaeda and Iranian supported Muslim Fanatics that are placing IED's and killing those that I love, those that are ther in peace. Islam has a tenet, a core belief: Convert or Kill the Infidel...Mos Def is a Coward!!!
at least an intellectual coward. He might be "hard" on the street, but so are idiots and the prisons are full of them. Plus a Lion or Tiger is pretty "hard" too! How much do you respect their opinions though?
And fuck YOU, because the twat's entire persona is being 'politically aware,' which in rap translates to race. Just because he knows how to use flowery words it doesn't mean he fools everyone. Maybe you.
Hitchens rightly called Mos Def on his bullshit. MD should have just backed off and admitted that he didn't have all the answers all the time. And just because someone has a posh English accent doesn't mean he is an asshole.
Mos Def is childish, narcissistic, and a boring blowhard! He was rude to Hitchins and Rushdie because he was embarrassed at being less informed than they on certain subjects. And because they felt sorry for him, they were, for the most part quite gracious to him, in spite of his rudeness. It was embarrassing -- but he had no idea people were embarrassed for him. A little humility and honest desire to learn something would have earned him more respect.
Those of you accusing Maher of being overly-partisan obviously do not regularly watch him. He has lambasted all parties involved and that's why I prefer him over almost all other commentators. The questions need to be asked and Maher isn't afraid to ask them.
The Bush Administration sold the line about owning your own home? Uh, that's been a part of the "American Dream" since the fifties, bud. I really like Mos Def, but he really should've done some research before trying to sit alongside Rushdie and Hitchens.
Mos Def illustrates the problems with entertainers in general voicing political opinions. I'm all for freedom of speech, but these entertainers often have no college education and generally get most of their information from tv news and inaccurate internet sources. They perpetuate a cycle of ignorance because they have influence with their fans and other people think if someone is famous they must be all-knowing.
ok most entertainers who have been in the hollywood buisness since childhood may not have much of a focus on educatio but mos def is most certainly educated. He actually gives reasons why he believes the way he does & he is not only on the show because he is famous. I can see if you dont agree with his point of view but he represents what a lot of educated black americans think which is the point of having a panel in the 1st place. I happen 2 like mos def & he is very informed on his history
Mos Def is absolutely right, in my opinion, so many lower income people don't have internet, and even if they do..they don't know where to start to get educated, self cultivated, aware..etc...I think Internet access should be part of the benefits people receive if they get welfare, ore if they are low income and can't afford it, not having internet puts people at an extreme disadvantage...
Hitchens is always an asshole, that's part of his thing. That's part of why many people think he should never speak on behalf of atheists, it makes us look like arrogant know-it-alls. On the otherhand this attitude is why many think he should speak for atheists, because the faithful deserve to be treated with distain, condescension and the arrogance of someone who knows they are better than you. Personally I like Dawkins for his passive-aggressive arguing style over Hitchens Bulldog style.
I believe in God and I prefer Hitchens' style because he's interesting and informative in his stance on atheism. Dawkins has a smarter than thou attitude and he seems arrogant.
Dawkins only has that arrogant attitude on topics were he IS smarter than thou. For example when a creationist starts saying 'There's no missing link', which is false and has been for over 50 years, he tends to get a bit snarky. But isn't that the right of those who are educated on a topic? If for example I were to stand up and say 'the bible claims Jesus was a pedophile' (which it obviously false) people who were educated in the bible would probably get snarky and arrogant with me.
And Bill Maher is a pretty smart guy... but his show isn't interesting unless he puts someone with a gd brain at the other end of the table. Why is he always inviting these rappers on?
Like I said, Clearly a setup, and sorry guys but Bill Maher is ???? I don't even know what to say about him. He used to date Karrine Steffans "Superhead". Enough Said.
Mos def didn't do the greatest job but at the same time, clearly this was a setup. I watched the whole thing the other night and I felt like they were ganging up on him and when he did talk he was interuppted or talked over. Also you have to understand that he has to censor himself period on things that he says because of his "celebrity". If they were really serious about getting the "black" perspective, why not invite someone that is more qualified to speak on these subjects.
You can make that assumption from one comment I made. He comes off as uninformed and cliched. Especially in the next video. It's embarrassing to watch. I love his music, but don't care for his attempt at talking intelligently about politics and policy.
Mos Def has a few loose screws, but he's right about people not having access to information. It's not that computers aren't available, it's just that there's so much false info that it's hard to sift through it and get the quality accurate info. Society functions to profit, and to profit it's easier for the media to provide low quality biased info. So, in fact, he's right that society encourages ignorance.
But Americans should be blamed for being more interested in Google-ing Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, American Idol coverage and whatever big media scandal/gossip is going on. Look at the top 10 or 20 searches per week.
I agree that the consumers who buy into the garbage the mainstream media feeds them are partly to blame. I for one, am an American who can't stand Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, or American Idol.
iwillskinyoualive-I think that the person giving examples of available information was trying to name some of the many sources, including Fox, we don't just pick the news that reports what we want and burn the rest. Try to read the entire statement and not fixate on the word Fox, maybe you will gain some understanding. It was a valid point.
Honestly, Mos Def doesnt know what he's talking about. It's paranoid irrational shit. I respect his work but it's silly to have him on discussing politics and policy.
That black idiot is on national T.V. talkin about issues YOU would never be able to do...sooo.. your comment sound a little contradicting to what your sayin, he is a joke...?? HUH ???
PLZ !!! have some respect for people that don't wear suits and ties...LOL. I don't even think you have a clue why you hating on Mos Def ,, fuckin hoody and a cap.. why not.. lol..
Keep those pathetic comments to yourself... Peace..
I understand that, it was used as military communications since 70s. But what Def said was that the internet as a mass communication instrument had been around for 2 generations, that's where my confusion was stemming. Cheers.
he raised good points that's all I'm saying (the whole interview not just this clip). You can bash my opinions all you want I don't give a fuck, but maher has had more ridiculous guests than mos def.
Mos Def a great guest?? Are you retarded? Or are you one of those minorities who mindlessly supports one another no matter how stupid they act or talk?
Most Def is a great guest. You are very ignorant. Take the time to learn what the word "retarded" acutally means. Your cognition may in question or maybe blinded by racism. "One of those minorities"..bow to your African American President; the most inelligent one you ever had!
Kennedy was smooth, I dont necessarily know about more intelligent per se.
Reagan...absolutely not. Movie star turned actor...I'd love to see how fast the GOP would attack any celebrity who tried to become a Democrat contender.
I think Mos Def was a great guest. Half the time this show gets too serious almost bordering on boring. Mos Def may not be an educated intellectual like the other two, but it doesn't matter. He makes the most sense to me, by just speaking the truth and not giving some over the top bullshit answer that only three people in america would understand.
the fact that only 3 people would understand underlines the point that americans are fucking mentally retarded and we need to get educated. you just pointed out that you like this guy because he is an average fuck face. i like mos defs music but dude needs to stay in the studio cuz he is one dumb mutherfucker when it comes to public policy and government
Mos Def is right on - it's only been a short while that Obama has been in office. If anything I'm right proud of the man (Obama) for what he has accomplished so far, and especially the whole reasonable tone of his administration.
what cracks me up with u people is wait till the hyper inflation kicks in fro all these bailout handouts that everybody sees to think doesnt affect the .. just wait
Fantastic luck? Rushdie is human bleeds and breaths air like everybody else and rushdie and mos agree on alot of the same things except for the approach on how to disarm islamic radicals what are you talking about?whats up with the unneccessary insults
Salman Rushdie summed it up pretty well-every country is doing the same thing, because it`s the only sensible thing to do- end of discussion Mr. Maher. Bringing Mohammed younis into the conversation by suggesting he might know something that haven`t been thought of, seems to point to the fact that the musician guy don´t really understand what he is talking about although he was right to point out that Obama need more time to solve a problem of this magnitude.Maher is okay but no Jon Stewart.
No, the sensible thing to do is allow bad companies to fail, and let the market sort it out. Our country (USA) and others, if they just left it alone, and did NOT print money like there is no tomorrow, they could expect a mild recession. What these nations are doing now if emulating ZIMBABWE. NO JOKE. Zimbabwe, where the inflation is so bad, merchants only accept GOLD.
LOL bin laden vids AREN'T REAL AT LEAST NOT ALL OF THEM!!!! SO YR SAYN RESEARCHERS IN COLLEGES PEOPLE FOM THE GOVT. SAY THERE ARE FAKE VIDEOS DONE N WELL RESEARCHD ALSO BY ALEX JONES
do yr research, seriously i bet u think bin laden did 9/11, i bet u think obama will 'fix" economy i bet u dont know squat what fema camps and new world order would bring nuff said.
Salmon Rushdi "Nobody is offering anything better than this"
Wrong, All the Keynesian economists (the ones who got us in this mess) think we can print and spend our way out of this, but the Austrian economists, the ones who TOLD everyone we were in for this, correctly maintain that all this spending will do, is take us from a deflationary recession into a inflationary DEPRESSION.
What we are going through NOW is NOT the problem, it is the RESULT of the problem. The problem is the Fed and government intervention in the economy. The Free Market wants to rid itself of bad companies, which were allowed to exist in the first place because of lax lending standards, and the inflationary practices of the Fed. Now that those artificial conditions no longer exists, the market wants to efficiently get rid of the dead weight.
Now if the Fed didnt not have control over interest rates, normally, naturally, the market forces would raise interest rates, which would curtail borrowing, and stimulate saving. Bad companies and banks would go under, and the pieces would be bought up for a deal by competitors or investors.. The nation would experience a recession of a year or two, in which prices would FALL on most goods and services.
Now what the gov and Fed are doing is trying to control the market (which is how we got in this mess), and rather than let the market clean out the dead wood, it (the gov/Fed) wants to pick winners and losers by bailing out some, and not others. The gov wants to avoid this deflationary recession, so they are keeping interest rates super low, and printing new money like it is going out of style. We tried this during the thirties, and it got us the Great Depression.
Jesus Motherfucking Christ... I am so sick of all the conservative retards in this country posing as economists... you want to debate economics? Do you? Can you draw me an IS/LM diagram? How about an AD/SRAS? Do you know what a marginal propensity to consume is? You don't? Then shut the fuck up. We'll call you if we need you to change our tires.
Congrats, you're taking, or have taken, some basic Econ courses. Have a cookie. Now try to refute Von Mises, and all the other Austrian economists who correctly called the path our economy has taken over the last century. What? You can't? Then shut the fuck up. We'll call you if we need another Keynesian cockface to tell us how we can print, borrow, tax and spend our way out of a recession.
Right, because everyone knows that when we're in a crippling economic disaster fucking AUSTRIA is where we should turn to for guidance. Are you really this fucking stupid? Can I buy your handicapped parking permit off you?
You have GOT to be trolling. You PRETEND to know something about economics but you havent heard of the Austrian School of Economics?!?!? Austrian Economics (named as such because of the Austrian Economists who began the branch, the most famous of which is Ludwig Von Mises, noted as conservatism's GREATEST economist in the 20th century) IS FREE MARKET ECONOMICS. Holy Christ, if you really are an Econ student and they dont even MENTION Austrian Economics you're being ripped off.
The Austrian School (also known as the Vienna School or the Psychological School) is a heterodox school of economics[1][2] that emphasizes the spontaneous organizing power of the price mechanism, holds that the complexity of subjective human choices makes mathematical modeling of the evolving market extremely difficult (or impossible) and therefore advocates a laissez faire approach to the economy.
I would love Obama to even mention about auditing those bastards. You can trace back all the problems where in to them. As for Mr. Rushdie calling for a one world currency, dose he mention who would be in charge of it. As for Bill Mahaer what a joke dose he even question the fed and printing money out of thin air and charging intrest on it.
Who would be in charge? The assumption is those who are already in charge of the various central banks, World Bank, and IMO. That would be, private bankers. The money trust.
Mos Def is a loudmouth, ignorant, idiotic airhead. Period.
Is this guy supposed to be the voice of his generation or something?
If that's the case, then his generation is in BIG BIG trouble!
What a joke!
I'm all in favour of having a "contrasting viewpoint" on the show. But that would require being able to think and speak above the level of someone who has sustained a serious brain injury.
Being from the "hood" is no excuse for being a twit - it's a cop-out.
You must be the moron who goes around and votes 'thumbs up' for everything that's pro-Mos Def and 'thumbs down' for everything that calls him out for what he really is - a know-nothing fucking fool who has the brains of a table leg and the wisdom of a smelly old sock.
The question is whether or not Mos Def is a know-nothing, loudmouth fool - who resorts to raising his voice when confronted with his own ignorance, inadequacy, rudeness, and stupidity.
The answer is YES. If this wasn't obvious to you during the interview then you must be smoking the same rat-poison as this Mos Def asshole.
The tell-tale signs of brain damage are usually pretty easy to see.
What a shame that on a panel which featured true intellectual heavyweights like Salman Rushdie and Christopher Hitchens that we were forced to listen to the incoherent ramblings of a common bum like Mos Def.
Bill, by all means, dedicate an entire panel to incoherent common bums - then you can have Mos Def on again!
I'm still feeding everything Mos Def said through a translating machine and -- hopefully by sometime next week -- I'll know what the hell he was saying.
IN 2005 THE U.S.A. WAS RANKED 48th IN EDUCATION JUST BEHIND POLAND AT 47th. It's only gotten worse in the past five years. When I was growing up we had dumb Pollock jokes going around, I guess we can now substitute Pollock with American.
i'm sorry but mos def completely ruined this episode, he just shouted nonsense throughout the entire show, said nothing relevant to the discussions or anything intelligent...from information isn't out there to bin laden doesn't matter...are you serious, crackhead
i love maher but what the fuck, can;t he get three panel members anymore. Mos Def seems like a good guy but come on......get some people who have a clue and an education.
Hardly. Watch the after show and see how truly stupid he is when he says he doesn't trust the translations of Bin Laden speaches but has done nothing to get his own translation. I guess ignorance is bliss.
I was thinking that they would have to make a new currency to fix the problem. I bet that is the plan of the globalists is to destroy the dollar and force people to use a new currency a world currency.
Oh, only if Mos could control his stutter. Brilliant man. Some one tell him to check with Kirian Chettry of CNN how she managed to get rid of her stutter.
I hate 2 be against maher on this but even he has 2 admit that only a little while ago no1 was against owning a home and that was all any1 could talk about. It felt like everywhere you turned you were being encouraged to become a home owner and stop waisting money on rent. Its crazy that now every1 has amnesia about this and of course bills echelant of company never had that as a problem, seeing that money was not too much of a concern 4 them. & all the bankers can conveniently hide their hands
I think people were encouraged to own homes not to waste money on rent, but rather to keep up with the Jones' and it's the 'American Dream'. Housing prices have skyrocketed to levels to where nobody can afford a home and people are living beyond their means. Housing prices have been ridiculous for awhile now so it sucks that it took a failing economy to bring it to everyone's attention that we're being screwed. In the end, the renters were smarter unless you bought your house before 2000.
What Mr Rushdi is missing that the majority of the people can not live withing their means. How can you live within your means when the real wages have been stagnant for three decades and the cost of health care and education and living has gone up? Drive people poor, give them credit, and benefit from their life long debt. That how the financial system works.
People that still support Obama are delusional. They are just like Bush zoombies except there is more of them.

Try to read the entire statement and not fixate on the word Fox, maybe you will gain some understanding. It was a valid point.

I'd say Kennedy, Reagan and Bush the First were all more intelligent than Obama.
NapaSales150 2 years ago
Good point. My memory only goes as far back as Nixon, so I can't speak about Kennedy
Ford? Subpar intellect.
Carter? Sub-subpar intellect, despite his reputation.
Reagan? A simple mind with a simpler worldview. Which is not exactly a bad thing if you're president--but a great thinker, Ronnie was not.
Bush the First? Perhaps, his mangled delivery notwithstanding. I could never get a read on the guy.
Clinton? Extremely smart, for a redneck.
Bush the Second? Could tie his own shoelaces.

Zarathustrasbrother 2 years ago
No, the sensible thing to do is allow bad companies to fail, and let the market sort it out. Our country (USA) and others, if they just left it alone, and did NOT print money like there is no tomorrow, they could expect a mild recession. What these nations are doing now if emulating ZIMBABWE. NO JOKE. Zimbabwe, where the inflation is so bad, merchants only accept GOLD.

mavsfan2k4 2 years ago
Salmon Rushdi "Nobody is offering anything better than this"
Wrong, All the Keynesian economists (the ones who got us in this mess) think we can print and spend our way out of this, but the Austrian economists, the ones who TOLD everyone we were in for this, correctly maintain that all this spending will do, is take us from a deflationary recession into a inflationary DEPRESSION.
NapaSales150 2 years ago
we are in a depression. recession was 2 years ago
Azzaiel 2 years ago
Yeah dunno why he said that :|
wackid89 2 years ago
what solution are austrian economists offering?
avalsonline 2 years ago
DO NOTHING! (its hard, I know).
NapaSales150 2 years ago
continued...
NapaSales150 2 years ago
continued...
NapaSales150 2 years ago
Jesus Motherfucking Christ... I am so sick of all the conservative retards in this country posing as economists... you want to debate economics? Do you? Can you draw me an IS/LM diagram? How about an AD/SRAS? Do you know what a marginal propensity to consume is? You don't? Then shut the fuck up. We'll call you if we need you to change our tires.
GENERICCEREAL67 2 years ago
Not a conservative, asshole.
NapaSales150 2 years ago
I like your response Napa. I have cookie for Econ student as well.
msjah1 2 years ago
Right, because everyone knows that when we're in a crippling economic disaster fucking AUSTRIA is where we should turn to for guidance. Are you really this fucking stupid? Can I buy your handicapped parking permit off you?
GENERICCEREAL67 2 years ago
You have GOT to be trolling. You PRETEND to know something about economics but you havent heard of the Austrian School of Economics?!?!? Austrian Economics (named as such because of the Austrian Economists who began the branch, the most famous of which is Ludwig Von Mises, noted as conservatism's GREATEST economist in the 20th century) IS FREE MARKET ECONOMICS. Holy Christ, if you really are an Econ student and they dont even MENTION Austrian Economics you're being ripped off.
Mises(dot)org
NapaSales150 2 years ago
The Austrian School (also known as the Vienna School or the Psychological School) is a heterodox school of economics[1][2] that emphasizes the spontaneous organizing power of the price mechanism, holds that the complexity of subjective human choices makes mathematical modeling of the evolving market extremely difficult (or impossible) and therefore advocates a laissez faire approach to the economy.

I would love Obama to even mention about auditing those bastards. You can trace back all the problems where in to them. As for Mr. Rushdie calling for a one world currency, dose he mention who would be in charge of it. As for Bill Mahaer what a joke dose he even question the fed and printing money out of thin air and charging intrest on it.
trexx32 2 years ago
Who would be in charge? The assumption is those who are already in charge of the various central banks, World Bank, and IMO. That would be, private bankers. The money trust.

& all the bankers can conveniently hide their hands
allenanb 2 years ago
I think people were encouraged to own homes not to waste money on rent, but rather to keep up with the Jones' and it's the 'American Dream'. Housing prices have skyrocketed to levels to where nobody can afford a home and people are living beyond their means. Housing prices have been ridiculous for awhile now so it sucks that it took a failing economy to bring it to everyone's attention that we're being screwed. In the end, the renters were smarter unless you bought your house before 2000.
princess11222 2 years ago
What Mr Rushdi is missing that the majority of the people can not live withing their means. How can you live within your means when the real wages have been stagnant for three decades and the cost of health care and education and living has gone up? Drive people poor, give them credit, and benefit from their life long debt. That how the financial system works.
