The whole concept of meaning, significance, is not tangible. It is fully interpretation. Religion requires faith, but everything we engage in requires a sort of faith on some levels. Believing in science requires faith (I've found, especially the more that's discovered, the more is realized how little we do know in the scope of things)...
Action is necessary. So is prayer. It's necessary that they come hand in hand. Only praying is futile, and only action is wayward.

Religions absolutely do sell. They sell: eternal life for those frightened of death, rules and rituals for those lacking self direction and independence, a sense of purpose for those without direction, answers for the uneducated and naive.
Religions sell all of these things in return for compliance and submission. They do all of this without a factual basis for the gods they supposedly represent.

It's a shame how one of the most advanced nations in the Near East is controlled by zealots.
I's a shame that the alternative which the Iranians are backing at the moment is not not much better. On the other hand, maybe it's the only way to get rid of the current ones. Hopefully they'll succeed, and then overthrow the entire clan of zealots to the garbage bin of history.
