  • Oh by the way for all you folks looking for FREE virtualization...go download Citrix Xen right now...it's totally free and unlike VMWare it will install on IDE drives so you can play with it at home. VMware offers a free version but it's not the full blown thing AND it will only run on scsi disks.

  • I think citrix charge too , forgive me if i am wrong :D

  • it isn't free... at least not legally

  • There is a free version youtube wont let me post a link so you will have to goto the VMware homepage and tag products/esxi/ to the end of it. It is a cut down version IIRC it doesn't support vmotion or any advanced features but if you just want a free hypervisior to support vms then that is your product.

  • @leeroyjenkinsii I have ESXi 4 running on two servers that are in IDE legacy mode. I haven't had any issues with the hypervisior.

Now the client, well, thats a whole other story <_<

  • thinstall is goofy. Why load a whole dekstop for just app. With Citrix I get all this plus just apps if I want them so where you gotta "spend" 512 MB or Ram for just one app I can get by with like 60 or 70 MB...whatever the footprint of the app is. Oh yeah what about one to many disks...you gotta use emc or netapp or some hugely expensive san vendor. Citrix comes with provisioning server so I don'h have to waste disk space per vm and I can stream to physical boxes too.

  • Hey guyes can we install this ESXI in Virutal machine. If yes can you please tell that what the resources which will be used. As in other videos they say that there is specific HCL which this version of Vmware supports.

    Please reply soon.

  • Not bad. I must admit I have been playing around with it at work for a few months now. Its growing on me. But I prefer XEN!!! Nothing wrong in knowing both :-)!!!

I think its better to set a static IP address initially for the NIC set aside for the ESX, DHCP can take sometime not alk about trying to remember the IP address. Anyway good post.

  • ESX 3i 3.5.0 does fail to DHCP for me. In this video it also ends up on 169.254.0.1 (see video position 4:00). I read that this could be due to ESX not waiting long enough for the DHCP response. There are examples of how to increase the wait for older ESX versions but they use a console command line which does not function in this version.

After ESX boots using "Restart Management Network" causes it to retry DHCP and then it works but needing that every time prevents unattended reboots.

  • I've had problems with software not waiting long enough for dhcp to respond, but it has rarely been an issue with the dhcp server. While a longer timeout would solve the problem, for the most part it has been a switch issue. Where the machine boots and requests dhcp before the switch has fully configured the port. If this happens with a cisco switch you can enable port fast on it. Just thought it might be something to look into.

  • definitely turn on port fast, that is the most common cause of this problem. The previous poster "digitalloving" was right on.

  • Yes, I fixed it by turning on "spanningtree portfast" on the switch some time ago. Now that ESX 3i is free I have to run out and buy something to run it on.

  • hey Fuccking XEN!! its crape

  • yes xen is hard ass there is also an oracle vm and this the 3 kings

  • I have used Xen, I have used vmware, I have used RedHat, nothing is close to VMware esx feature set.

  • Amazing product

  • Really impressive! But i still prefer Xen!
