Karl Rove put the lipstick reference in the speech they wrote for Palin to read. In Iowa last October, McCain drew comparisons between Hillary Clinton's current health care plan and the one she championed in 1993: "I think they put some lipstick on the pig, but it's still a pig." He used roughly the same line in May, after effectively claiming the Republican nomination. No one called it sexist then.

I'd like to say I'm not an Obama fan. I believe McCain/Palin is most qualified to lead this country & will be my pick. I can't read Obama's mind, but by what he was saying before his dumb comment, I think he had hoped to use a phrase that pulled Gov Palin some kudos. I hesitant to believe he's so stupid as to call Gov Palin a pig, knowing it would be used against him. (I could be wrong!) If you want to win you make the others look less desirable than yourself. It's politics!

actually he was talking about mccain not palin, since mccain was pretending that he is change when his polices are exactly the same as bush. When you say youll change change but your policies disagree, its safe to make that reference of "lipstick on a pig" in other words mccain is attempting to disguise himself.
If you are truly a hillary supporter then surely you will agree with her women's rights and education policies which obama supports.

I put the saying in the context of the remarks about McCain's policies. In context the Pig = McCain. As a double entendre Lipstick = Palin. A dismissive, misogynistic insult to Palin, insulting McCain too. Two pigs with one stone. What if a Republican during Clinton's campain said you can put a pantsuit on a pig but it is still a pig? What then? Macacca! Obama flipped Clinton the bird so the audience could see but she couldn't during a debate. The audience laughed. Presidential? NO.

He paused and prepared to deliver the punch line. He reached up and subconsciously touched himself while delivering the line. He paused after the first line, waiting for the crowd response to build. The crowd came unglued as he finished the jab. It seems obvious to me that the crowd absolutely 'got it' and knew it was a reference to Palin.
It looks like to me that the 'old fish' comment was a follow-on jab at McCain.

The double entendre meaning of this 'lipstick' comment is blatantly obvious. Yeah, it's a comment that politicians use. But everyone knows about Palin's lipstick comment and it would require the "willing suspension of disbelief" to think that Obama did not intend this line to be a dig at Palin. How could he not know of the effect of this line? I just cannot believe this was not deliberately thought out.
