I've had public option health insurance in Japan, a very conservative country with a socialized health care system. They maintain the system by requiring that everyone join the system and pay a minimum of $150.00 per month in order to be covered under it. Even then, the public option only picks up 70% of your total doctor's office bill. It is generally advisable to also pick up private insurance to cover the rest of the tab.
