yeah the shan, lao and thai langauges are all quite similar. they belong to the tai language group. but shan is maybe even closer to lao than it is to thai.
Yes, because modern Thai(and Lao) has drawn a lot of words from Pali and Sanskrit. By listening to other Tai languages:Shan, Tai-lue, Tai-dam, Tai-lanna(chiang mai), I have come to conclude that Thai has changed a lot more because those Tai languages sound a lot closer to Lao. Well, of course my conclusion is just a theory. :)
I agree. Lao (Tai noi) and Shan (Tai yai) are more closer than to Thai in many ways especially the languages. Most Thai probably consider Shan are "Ban nork" or rural country people as well as Lao.

I know "Sai" is pronounced Jai and it means "Thao" in Lao.
