"Oh no I'm mistaken" hahaha I don't know what it is but I find humor in that line! Excellent video, I definitely need to add one of these to my arsenal now!
Is there really such a low risk of being bitten/attacked by big Pike in lakes like that? I would think that swimming in a lake full of large, toothy predators would be a little risky.
@Graceclaw I have to say, if there's any genuine record of a person being attacked by a pike when swimming, I'd certainly like to hear about it. To my knowledge this has never happened, hence the statement that the risk is low, but ignorance is bliss, I suppose!
how much water could i cover in a float tube and how long would it take? theres a lake i plan to float tube in its fairly big but i dont plan to go far.
Nice Vid. Ireland is such a beautiful country. While in the Military I flew back and forth over it going from the US to England and back many times, and it is so pretty green and I love the fields defined by the rock walls. I just bought myself a Tube today at a yard sale and will have to try it out on some of our local lakes here in New Mexico. Boats with other than electric motors aren't allowed, so it should be just about perfect. I'll go catch and realease some rainbows. Happy Fishing to you
I have done this fishing for steelhead and larger trout. The thrill is when you get a 5 pounder, on the fish will make runs just below your fins, and you get to do some quick manuevering with your tube as you spin a 180.
ive just ordered a cat-4 float tube from the states for less than two hundred euro an i cant wait till it arrives lol every lough in ireland is goin to be fished by me ive just started flyfishing for pike two weeks ago and wouldnt fish any other way now if your thinking of trying it do its unreal my first on the fly was 2 lbs and when i hooked it i thought i was fighting a monster till i got it up to the boat all i could do was laugh! what lough is he fishing in the video?
it looks a great way to fish but the only couple of questions that come to mind are what happens if you get a really big fish on the line how do u get it in ? and where do you keep it if your not putting it back ?
There is just something about slipping silently into a small body of water in a tube slightly before dawn. I've watched deer come in and drink, ducks land on the water, and even bobcats come in for a drink and a look see. There is NOTHING like it!
From Canada!... I like your tactics. I got a float tube, or belly boat as we sometimes call them, for christmas. Looks like fun, ive never done it and this video didnt make the wait for the ice to disappear any easier. Thanks guys, Cheers.
Ps. Thanks for the tip on what flippers to get, little added bits like that can be more helpful then you guys might first think.
trout traps inc. made in U.S.A. not china from experience I Have mine since 1988 And it is functioning. the higher the back the better in any kind of wind as your back keeps dry .velcro fasteners & good zip quality are also to watch out for again the more compartments the better some even carry fins most have two tubes .
These float tubes are awesome I just purchased one this summer and I spent almost everyday in it on small ponds and lakes. It's funny to see people's reactions because a lot of people have never seen them before. I had one person tell me it looked like i was fishing from a life raft haha, but then they stopped laughing when I landed a nice pike similar to the size he catches in this video!!
You deserve a more sophisticated audience! At least the ones that are commenting. Excellent video and great inspiration. Do you use a special "toothy-safe" pike leader?
I appreciate your sensible comment. Alan sometimes uses a Kevlar trace, which is light and fairly flexible. Other times, he doesn't use a trace - in practice, the relatively large lure means a pike's teeth rarely come into contact with the leader.

How did you make a high quality 14+ minute video in under 100 MB? Seen the new, pontoon-style belly boats with their own pack, oars (you can use fins, too) and inflator? Pontoon will keep you higher (and thus warmer). Be sure to put "belly boat" on your tag line; that's what we call 'em. I can't imagine a face-full of pike in a belly boat! Awesome.
I use the H.264 codec for compression - that comes wrapped in Quicktime, or you can use it direct from the timeline in FCP. That's the codec to use for your video iPod. Thanks for the tip ref. "Belly boat" - I shall promptly abide!
Float Tubing is a very nice way to fish. I've enjoyed doing it for bigmouth (bass) in smaller ponds. If you haven't already, try it, fellow fisherman. It's almost therapeutic, it's so comfortable.
I'll tell ya...I catch some good fish on my nightcrawler, then my arm doesn't get tired beating the water. Esp. ice fishing put two worms on and I caught a 10 lb brookie (wall hanger)

How come your float tube plus flippers plus bodymass doesnt scare the fish!! Most fishermen aim to avoid noise and movement altogether!!! Great vid though
That's a good question! I suppose it has to do with the range, ie Alan is covering fish that are 20 or 30 metres away. Fish generally seem to spook only once you are almost on top of them. I don't really know!
