Went up to churchill in 04 when they still had the combined VIA/Amtrack 30 day pass. Saw tundra, the northern lights some whales a polar bear and ate some Arctic charr . I guess it was money worth spent. Next time I'll do it in January and really get my money's worth
I belive that Amtrak used a few FL9 units up until 2003 on Empire Service. Not sure if they were as old as the VIA FP9s but probably around the same age. I think VIA has 1 or 2 operating FP9s for switching cars. I don't know why though an F unit isn't the best choice for yard work. Also I think Metro North used FL9s very recently and may still use some.
During a stop at Thompson I talked to the engineer on the FP-9. He said they all liked the old-style controls on these units because they were ideal for switching. He didn't like the idea to have to switch to modern, desk-type controls one day.
Ah I see. Some F40s are old style controls which I like much better. and I don't like buttons for horns. I'm not an engineer but I just like the look of old style controls better.

Its to bad they dont have the Fs in regular service anymore. VIA refurbished a few of them back in the 90's for HEP and eventually sold them off.
VIA still has one left, sitting at VIAs Vancouver Mantinence Center as a shop switcher.
