Symbols are the most powerful form of expression humans have. They influence and manipulate, they can do great harm to those who don't understand them properly.
Merely looking at symbols can cause unwarranted psychological reactions. The reactions formed are of course directly linked to conditioning through either repeated exposure or simple misunderstanding. Take for example the McDonald's 'M'.... If you see the 'M' you know it means Mcdonalds. THAT is power my friends, much power.

But symbols don't have the luxury of meaning different things. A symbol is created for a reason, a purpose, and that purpose seldom changes. A tiger can't change it's stripes.
