@Iksbrown Exactly! I actually find it sad how everybody has heard of TSO, but not many people have heard of Savatage (which is made of few of the TSO founders). If anybody hasn't heard of Savatage until now, then they should check out all of the work they have down. They will be shocked by how such a talented band never became mainstream (not much anyways) until TSO was formed.
@keiyakins TSO are members of Savatage. Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24 is originally a Savatage song, but TSO is technically Savatage too.....confused yet? lol
@keiyakins The TSO version is identical to the original Savatage version...they just re-released the original recording. It was this song that led to the idea of the TSO Christmas concerts.
Savatage's "break" has lasted over a decade now. Basically all the members have solo projects(Jon Oliva's Pain, Chris Caffery has a self-named solo band, Zak sings for Circle II Circle), while they make their money off TSO. Savatage themselves are for all intents and purposes, gone, so TSO and the solo projects are as close as you'll get.
@fr33bird7891 You are wrong. TSO started as a side project by members of Savatage. But saying TSO IS Savatage is like saying Paul McCartney and Wings was The Beatles. I have nothing against TSO. They make beautiful music. But something that started as a side project did indeed lead to the demise of a great metal band.
@BackAlleySwingYT They've been "on a break" for over 10 years now. Rumors swirl around about them doing something new and then they are squashed by Jon. I hope you're right but I'm not getting my hopes up at this point.
@HeliasValenti I mean the beginning of TSO and its growing popularity, in my opinion, has taken away one of my favorite bands, Savatage. This song was the beginning of one group and ultimately the end of another. I love TSO's music, don't get me wrong. But I love Savatage's music so much more.
@jtmarten1 Do MY reaseach?? Cris died in '93. The band went on. Edge of Thorns, Handful of Rain, Dead Winter Dead and The Wake of Magellan were all recorded AFTER Cris's death.
@CowboyBill22 In 1995,Savatage released their second rock opera Dead Winter Dead,an even more ambitious undertaking than its predecessor,Streets. They also achieved cross-over success with Christmas Eve Sarajevo 12/24 which received heavy rotation on multiple radio formats during the Christmas season.Jon Oliva has since admitted that he was annoyed to see the success of TSO with what was originally a Savatage song, leading him to believe that the biggest barrier to success as Savatage was the name
@CowboyBill22 Yep....of course never the same without Criss...even so...
I went to a TSO show last month with a SAVATAGE shirt on(I'm a 50 year old metal head) anywayz...I was about 20 feet from the stage and I was screaming SAVATAGE and JOHNNY LEE all night...people thought I was a nut...ha..and at the end when Johnny was introduced..I stood up yelling SAVATAGE! he looked.....and when he saw the shirt pointed me out to Angus and smiled and waved. It made my night..and I think it made his too.
@MrNerd314159 If TSO doesn't have Jon Oliva in its lineup then there is no way they're Savatage. I understand what you're saying but I respectfully disagree. Saying former members os Savatage in TSO makes them Savatage is like saying Megadeth is Metallica because Mustaine is a former member. Two seperate groups, dude.
@CowboyBill22 As much as this is true. Jon is only not a member of the touring line ups. He actually wrote and played on all of their albums. He still contributes but does not tour with them.
@JohnnyBlade12 Yup. The main creative forces behind TSO are Jon Oliva and Paul O'Neill. Remember, Jon had stopped recording with Sava after Streets, but Criss and Jon were still very much "the band". When Criss died, Zachary was still singing, but Jon popped on to do vocals occasionally (and finally full time with Poets). Really all the living members of Savatage post "Gutter Ballet" save Steve Wacholz have recorded or toured in TSO. TSO is very much Savatage.
@theaterdreamer See I know that. Actually I heard that Jon also did keyboards on Edge Of Thorns. But Idk if that is true or not. I know that Jon still provides keyboards on TSO recordings. But I agree fully with what you are saying.
@HeliasValenti The band seriously changed direction after Criss' death. Not that the change was bad. Just different. I loved Jon's vocal style. Zach has an amazing voice and great stage presence. But vocals didn't "move me" the way Jon's did. Both are great. Just different.

Nope, the song was originally released by Savatage. TSO is made up of former Savatage members so they re-released this song.

@Iksbrown Unless they rereleased the exact same recording, I'm pretty sure this is the TSO one. If they did, shows what I know :P

The guitars are a little heavier in the background in this version, but otherwise i can't tell the difference.

One of the greatest bands EVER! Unfortunately, this song, and the subsequent TSO killed Savatage....
CowboyBill22 3 months ago 2
@CowboyBill22 Do some research. Criss Oliva died; as a result, TSO was born. The loss of Criss is what killed Savatage.

@CowboyBill22 Actually, the founder of Savatage got killed in a car wreck, so they continued the Savatage project to TSO.

@GHPro10 Jon and CRiss Oliva co-founded Savatage and yes Criss was killed by a drunk driver. But they made 3 more albums after Criss died.
