I watched this with my mom. I was about five years old. I ever remember this storyline w/ the two sisters and the baby. Laura and Iris. Thanks for the memories!!!!
My mother used to watch this along with "As the World Turns." I was only five that summer, but my mother usually gave me the choice of going outside to play, or if I was going to stay, to watch and be quiet. When the commercials came on, those afforded me some measure of entertainment (especially the "Dove" diswashing liquid animation). Watching this now is a sheer blast. The seriousness that attends this show! In a way, I should have wanted to know what happened to Iris' baby.
wow, the organ played in this theme is the Hammond X66. The organ was introduced in 1965, didn't realize this tv show was in black and white. Side note, this organ was also recorded on by Lenny Dee, the great MCA recording artist.
Attn. TheDangergirl35: this was a B&W kinescope. Every "Splendored" episode was in color; in fact, it was the first CBS soap to air all its episodes in color.
Oh this is a wonderful find! I had a crush on Donna Mills when I was barely a teenager. Laura Donnelly was so pretty and fragile, and I loved Iris. I remember when she went blind and was later healed. She told Spencer Garrison that he was a "sight for getting better ideas." I've remembered that line for 40 years. I don't know why. But thanks for posting this clip.
thanks for posting these episodes from 8/70. That was my first summer I remember watching soap operas with my mom. This was her favorite along with As the World Turns. I have always remembered the name Iris, so different a name for a 7 yr. old to hear.
To redo that comment, Julie was an alias. Her real name was Martha Donnelly, and was the former wife of Tom Donnelly and the mother of their son, Ricky. I mistakenly used the name of the character's actor (Shawn Campbell) as the name of the character, and hence the reposting.
This is such a RARE treat!! Thank you for posting this!!
The man playing Jim is Berkeley Harris Beverlee McKinsey real-life husband. Contary to popular belief, Bev and Berkeley did not meet on this show. Berkeley convinced her to take the job (she didn't want to move from CA to NYC) and then she ended up getting the producers to consider him for the role of Jim.
Thanks again, I have wanted to see this for decades and never thought I would have the opportunity!!
You are very welcome. Another bit of offscreen marital trivia. Sasha von Scherler, who plays Sarah Hanley in the scenes with Bev and Berkeley, was married to Paul Avila Mayer, creator of Ryan's Hope. At the time, Paul was headwriting Where the Heart Is, another CBS serial. LIAMST and WTHI were both canceled by CBS on the same day, putting husband and wife out of work simultaneously.
And so many of these gorgeous birds flew to the competing Peacock network (NBC) Beverlee to ANOTHER WORLD, Barbara Stanger to DAYS OF OUR LIVES, Bibi Besch to SOMERSET, and Velekka Gray to HOW TO SURVIVE A MARRIAGE, then SOMERSET. Then of course, Leslie Charleson made her mark on GENERAL HOSPITAL, and Donna Mills as scheming Abby on KNOTS LANDING.
This is such a wonderful treat! Beverlee (is that her natural Southern accent?), and Leslie Charleson! She's so young, and her voice is softer. I didn't know she and Donna Mills were still on the show by this time.
Thanks for the answers. I guess I got confused because of the closeness between Iris and that guy.
I can't imagine how viewers adjusted to two such popular faces leaving around the same time. I know Bibi Besch replaced one of them, didn't she? Or was she brought in later on?
Laura (Donna Mills) was married to Mark, who was an architect. Iris married Spencer Garrison (Ed Power), who was a senator. Laura & Iris previously vied for Mark's attention. Bibi Besch replaced Leslie and was the last Iris. Donna was replaced by Veleka Gray, who was succeeded by Barbara Stanger. Stanger and Besch were very good in the roles, too. LIAMST was a good soap. CBS threw it away. What a waste.
Thanks. I've heard good things about Stranger and Besh in their work over the years, I haven't seen them on this show though.
Schmering said CBS interfered with the show too much, then canceled it even when the ratings were still decent. I wish they'd given it more of a chance. I know that went on to be Y&R's timeslot but imagine how much stronger their schedule might be today if they'd kept some of the well rated soaps they saw as not worth keeping, and also brought in new soaps (like Y&R).
Y&R replaced Where the Heart Is. Love is a Many Splendored Thing telecast at 3PM immediately following The Edge of Night. The New Price is Right (which had been airing in the am) moved into LIAMST's afternoon timeslot.
Did they not have color in 1970

I love this theme song. I wish soaps were like this now. Maybe they wouldn't be getting cancelled so much

A rare treat, indeed.
Yes! Thank you so very much for posting this.
How sweet that Scott McKinsey gave props to his mom at this year's Daytime Emmy Awards. Rest in peace, Ms. McKinsey....

The organist on the show was the late Eddie Layton, who also played for the Yankees, Knicks and Rangers.

So this is the guy who replaced David Birney?

No, David Birney played Mark Elliott. Mark doesn't appear in this episode.

Donna Mills left one month after this episode aired, and Leslie Charleson left four months after Donna.
