Dear binboga, I just got your point on Ciltures, it has nothing to do with the fact that Fazil comes from Turkey to me, I meant only cultural language of the piece of art, I know wonderful chinese musicianas performoing European music.
This is terrible... it is worse than Elton John could do it (thanks to him he does not try)... this is a trick show over one of the greatest pieces of European culture, there's a life living in this music not fooling around... Just terrible and even more terrible that there are so many admirers of that faker.
Dear @binboga, By culture I mean a certain unity of notions about Human Being - the pillar of the European culture is Christian it It is not the matter of religion, church, but culture, mind, myth, idiomas of our everyday life e.g. I am not Christian by confession but I belong to European culture)
By trick I mean all he plays sums up in this video it say 'Mozart is the same thing as Ragtime".
But it's not!
Mozart is life itself, its the origin and the core of life, drama of characters.
Cultural heritage is universal. When you define it geographically or ethnically it leads us something like Nazis see the culture. I recommend you a library search on this issue. You can start looking at the site of UNESCO first.
When it comes to trick. It is an overstatement I think. You mean his interpretation. You cannot blame an artist for his interpretation. At the very most, you may like it or not.
@binboga It is noy the point of Nationality (I wrote below) heritage is universal, but cultre itslef can be in a family, in a city, in a country, even in a company (corporate culture), unversal is nothing, to understand universal we should understand personality, to love and understand another one we should understand not the common but the different traces in him. To understand Bach or Botticelli deeply you should know Christian mythology.
Why can't I say that I think that he plays it wrong?
@ProkofievRules He might be ugly but there is nothing fake in his emotion. He isn't making those faces to pretend that he's in the music. You should revel and live vicariously through this.
@ProkofievRules He isn't making those faces to pretend he likes the music and to entertain the crowd. It's genuine emotion and he might be ugly but it's real. If I could play with an orchestra I'm sure I'd look even uglier. You should be reveling in this.
Give me a break. What does it add to the music? Nothing. The music is what's important, and Fazil just doesn't get that. Watch his Ravel sonatine performance. Disgusting with all the hand motions.
Do you know what I revel in? Serious artistry. Give me Schnabel or Arrau playing only one piece, and I'd be happier than if I had access to all of Fazil's recordings.
I'm not a big fan of watching expressions of musicians so I know what you mean, but then again it's all about the music right? You may think those movements add nothing to the music, but it does to them. If you understood the joy of playing music yourself, you'd be able to atleast imagine that. I think music is ultimately about emotional connection and imagination, so it'd be nice to see music enthuasiasts demonstrate sensitivity&acceptance rather than leaving nasty comments.
Hahaha are you kidding? Who listens to Beethoven Piano Concerti anymore without understanding the joy of playing? I play piano. I understand the joy of it. It also allows me to tell the difference between fakery and genuine emotional connection to a piece. It allows me to tell the difference between real artistry, and whatever you would call this. But it isn't artistry.
Yeah, he's good and all that, but what the heck is the deal with all the new themes in the cadenza? It seemed like he could have stuck a little closer to the original material.

WOW!!! His own cadenza....very cool. Damn the purists! It's only since Beethoven that pianists are no longer EXPECTED to improvise and create their own cadenzas. I think Ludwig would get a kick out of it!
İşte bir kökten dinci geçinen gavur daha. Sizin gibi zihniyet değil midir 13 yaşındaki kızları analarının kucağından alıp dini nikah adı altında ırzına geçen. Sizin hocalarınız böyle dinci işte. Koşun sizde sapık supuğun peşinden. Hz.
I AM SO MUCH PROUD OF HIM AND HIS EACH FINGER! IT IS LIKE A TEAM OF 10 BROTHERS! HE IS MORE THAN AMAZING!!! AND THANKS TO HIS WAR ON ARABESQUE MUSIC! WE DO NOT NEED THAT NEW BORN (NEREDEN GELDIGI BELIRSIZ) MUSIC AND RAZORS :-) KEEP GOING SAY!
@ anfarahat: I agree that this cadenza sounds odd in a classical context; still, I think it is a delightful composition. The cadenza used to be "off the score", a chance for soloists to show their inventiveness. By respecting the composer¡s spirit, Mr Say crossed borders but not limits, so I say: Say, thank you for this expressive innovation!
@balikadam35 being David Dubal's assitant does not make you a classical expert. Also, while he does play *some* jazz, he is not a jazz player. I do agree, however, that it is a bit choppy. Just try not sound so pretentious about your opinions next time...
this is one of the best things I heard here on Youtube..it is my oppinion, I think this guy is awesome...the emotions when he plays..my head bobs with his playing :P
Hey, I'm having trouble understanding how Fazil Say had the stones to change Beethoven's music. I love his playing by the way I'm not trying to be insulting. I just don't get it...
He quoted Beethoven in his cadenza, but he also said something Beethoven wouldn't have said. Most pianists wouldn't dare open their mouths at all. Being so much at one with the piano is something us lesser mortals can only dream of.
In moments of crazyness it seems that I can explain the world! Every brave artist who cross the small line between this world and a world full of colourfull signs of art, is a genious! Which means you need to be out of control to seperate your body from your soul, to make music, paintings, books etc like this!Love him! Tebrikler Fazil dostum! Her sabah dinlerim ilk kahvemi icerken!

Hz.

great pianist, i love his virtuosity
tereziaildiko 1 year ago 4
@ anfarahat: I agree that this cadenza sounds odd in a classical context; still, I think it is a delightful composition. The cadenza used to be "off the score", a chance for soloists to show their inventiveness. By respecting the composer¡s spirit, Mr Say crossed borders but not limits, so I say: Say, thank you for this expressive innovation!

sorry people, but i have to say this beethoven is a bit choppy for my taste...he is a jazz musician after all
try listening to jacob lateiner play emperor, for example :) or even seymour lipkin and the rest of that generation
if you think i'm wrong, think again
(i am David Dubal's assistant)
balikadam35 2 years ago
@balikadam35 being David Dubal's assitant does not make you a classical expert. Also, while he does play *some* jazz, he is not a jazz player. I do agree, however, that it is a bit choppy. Just try not sound so pretentious about your opinions next time...

It is the prerogative of the soloist, that he/she can play his/her own cadenza, - and we don´t mind if the soloist is as gifted as this one.
metteholm75 2 years ago 3
