"one might think that was the same thing" well when you look at the tube connecting the rad coolant reservoir it goes directly to the bottom of the radiator so common sense should tell you that they are in fact the same thing. If you're tinkering in an old car, you may as well pick up the haynes manual it really is helpful.
The cap on the radiator has to be pushed down, then turned. And you can fill the overfill tank about 1/3 the way with antifreeze. Antifreeze is engine coolant / radiator coolant. Make sure if you get concentrated antifreeze that you mix it with water. Send me a message if you have more trouble with this.
