I had a kids album named after this song which had another song which was in a similar depressing type song called "Wrong Train". And blue, I agree with you, I did not think anyone had heard of this song besides my brothers and I!
When I was in gradeschool I used to lie in my parents bed listening to the radio before school. This song was popular and was played often. I'm so glad I was able to find it!
Thanks for posting this! I heard this in the early 1970s on The Johnny Walker show on WFBR in Baltimore. He might have played it because it mentioned the Baltimore Colts. (Not a lot of Bawler songs, really.)
I've been searching for this song since 1968. I was a big Colts fan and only heard this song once. In a verse, Bobby Russell sings "Staying at home watching the Baltimore Colts". I always thought it was a version of his song, "Saturday Morning Confusion". I knew I didn't dream I'd heard it on the radio that day!!!
I've been searching for this song since 1968. I was living in Sebring, Florida but had lived 8 years in Baltimore. I was a big Colts fan and only heard this song once. I knew I didn't dream I'd heard it on the radio that day!!!

Bobby Russell wrote lots of Super Great Songs. One of them was the True Story about his Young Wife and was Sung by Bobby Goldsborough and you can Look it up and Play it. Its called HONEY (1968)

for a long time i thougth i'd dreamed up this song.. but i love it! i remember it from when i was like.. uh.. 12??!! Its cool! thanks bobby russell! i'll never forget you! i loved this song.. and still do!
how come they never play this oldie on the oldies stations you never hear this one anymore but i do recall it playing on the radio once was that realy back in 1968 hmmm forgot when it came out ah well!
I heard this a lot in the fall of 1968, then heard his slightly bigger hit "Saturday Morning Confusion" a few years later. Seeing other references here that he had died, I wondered if they had him confused with another songwriter named Bob Russell, best known for "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother", who died around the time that the Hollies and Neil Diamond did that song in 1970, but I checked, and unfortunately, this guy died in 1992.
I grew up on the song as well as other gems. My dad was a great conniseur of music from this guy to Dolly Parton. Listen to "me and little andy". Love that music when you can understand the words
This song is a timeless classic I wish Tom Hanks would use for a movie. I could see Tom Hanks getting "whipped" by the neighborhood kids as a stay at home "Dad". This song takes me back to a time so wonderful in life!!
I've been telling my partner about this song for years. We have silly late night sessions where we sing snippets of songs from this era. The stuff we heard on our parent's AM radio, or maybe on the console/tv/hi-fi.
Red Roses for a Blue Lady, King of the Road, Today, Lazy Hazy Crazy Days of Summer, Walk Right In, Honey,
Makes us simultaneously feel old and young! Thanks for posting this - I'll make him listen to it tonight!
I, too, grew up listening to this on a 45 I bought at a garage sale. I like to think my life as a dad today is patterned after this song. Thank you for posting it.
Terrific song. Thanks for posting it. I just happened to be looking for the lyrics on the web when I came upon your posting.
I remember first hearing this song back in '68 on a "promotion copy" of the original LP by Bobby Russell on Elf Records (I believe that was the label). Lots of good songs on that album. Bobby was a really neat writer.
Just a record on a turntable. Simple and beautiful (and your sound quality is excellent!) I grew up with this song. I need to get my album "Words, Music, Laughter and Tears" recorded and uploaded into mp3 (I've acquired Saturday Morning Confusion as well). Meanwhile, I know where to find this...Thank you...
My Grandpa sings this all the time when he's cooking in the kitchen. I remember him singing it to me too when I was a little as a way to get me to go to sleep. XD It made me cry re-listening to it, but thank you VERY VERY much for posting it.
I love Bobby. This is vertualy the same song as 'Saturday Morning Confusion', (same sentiment anyway)! Under-rated, fabulous man. My Dad played this to me and my sisters when we were kids and now my kids love him. You just can not knock the guy. Awesome!
I think Bobby Russell was a clever song writer. This song is a sweet lyrical portrait of the quintessential dad. I had this record in a small flimsy plastic disc that I've never seen before or since. Wish I had it now, as I'm sure it's a collector's item. Thanks for adding this to the playlist.
You guessed it. . . the 1432 Franklin Pike Circle Cowboy.
