the great leo mackern rumpole of the old baily this is a british classic imagine if it was givin the hollywood remake majic what a blast that would be lets hope they give it a go
Actually the premise of this film is a variation on the nuclear-Armageddon theme, although scientifically speaking, it's completely preposterous. Unbeknownst to one another, the United States and the USSR conduct simultaneous tests of super-powerful atomic weapons at the north and south poles. Somehow the combined force first shifts the tilt of the earth's axis, then pushes the planet out of its orbit and sends it toward the sun.
That's absolute bilge, of course -- compared to the mass and inertia of the earth, even the biggest nuclear bombs are like a gnat landing on a boulder. But the film holds up surprising well today, with Val Guest's witty and literate script, full of typically British sardonic humor. Sample dialogue (as water becomes ever scarcer and more tightly rationed):
"It looks as if they're putting up community washing centers."
Gotta love trailers that give away the ending! Throwing water at each other and dancing in the street, how suspenseful! Stiil, I'll try to catch this obscure sci fi when I can since it's got Leo in it!
The realism of this film blows me away...how it shows a great city in crisis. I think every reporter in America should watch this movie. It might encourage them to really investigate what's going on in the political establishment.
Yes.. this movie introduced Edward Judd.. he should have went on to become a star...but it was Michael Caine who had a bit part in this as a traffic cop who made it.
I'm old enough to be able to say I saw this movie when it first was shown in theatres. It did "burn into my memory." I still can recall the details! I remember it seeming so real and it scared me. This is one of my favorite sci-fi films ever!
do you suppose a young Al Gore saw this movie on a saturday afternoon? It gave me chills when I saw it as a boy and now it gives me worse chills because of global warming.
A great film that the world has, sadly, caught up to.
I know its m. cain playing the bobby, but is that Diana Dors playing the nurse sitting behind the desk taking deatails?

One of the best Armageddon films ever........very realistic--and I notice the word "bastards" changed on the trailer to "bunglers"!

Love these old end-of-the-world sci-fi movies. I've never seen this one, but it does look good!

Edward Judd was an excellent actor who deserves to be better recognized. You might say he's the British Paul Mantee.
(Paul WHO??)

Edward Judd? Well he was (with Patrick Macnee) the original Avenger. And on Youtube there's got to be his "Think Bike" road safety PIF. :)
But seriously... the world getting hotter and hotter? Where do they get these ideas? ;)

I agree! Anything with Leo is fun to see. But besides this and HELP!, what else? (Oh yeah, A Jolly Bad Fellow!) Do you know any?

Actually that's not the ending. It really doesn't give away the ending. Besides, the film doesn't really have an ending as such :)

One of the best beginnings to a film ever!
Such simple and erie sound at the start with lifeless images in sepia. Chilling.
I think the sound was produced by rubbing a drumstick or something around cymbols? Anyone into music confirm this?
Could spend millions today to get the same experience and probably wouldn't be as good.
Wish they would release a special edition of this with a long making of. PLEASE!
