Variax isn't a synth. Neither a MIDI instrument. It's a guitar. All the processing to emulate the other guitar sounds are done with what is captured by the pickups and it's then changed (by severe eq'ing and filtering, whatever) to make what is coming out of the output jack to sound like the modeled/emulated guitar. Pretty much like your fav distortion pedal does when emulating a "tube" amp.
@MrToodling : thats a typical prejudice...variax is a guitar! far away from a synth...ok...this distortion sound is not the best one to show the ability of the guitar...listen to "hooligan" on my chanel, all guitars played with variax and POD...
it has a piezo bridge but the actual power behind the guitar is in the electronics where everything is wired up it can achieve quite a range of sounds it's unbelievable how good it can immitate such high end models of course it's not perfect you can't have a les paul without it being a les paul etc
I have a variax 600 sunburst, it is cool, works well, love it

pickups are in the bridge, after that it gets digitally modelled and plugs in any normal 1/4 jack.
