@doktorandom Most people that have grown up around the trees love the forest. In fact most people that work in wood products love the forest. Its more than just a living for the workers. I find it strange that so many of the people that don't want people to use natural resources like trees live in cities. I for one love both the forests as well as the animals that live there. Both love and respect that which makes our lives so much better.
I wonder how many people realize that spotted owls have been found in second and third growth timber. There are reasons for people on both sides of this issue to not report seeing spotted owls in the younger trees. Environmentalists don't want to admit that they live there. And the land owners want to be able to log there timber.
@m8s4lif I have seen spotted owl in the Woodland Park Zoo, with a sign proclaiming that they could only live in old growth forests..... They seem to have been doing ok at the zoo??
There's a great little reastaurant in Eugene that serves BBQ Spotted Owl. Like selecting a lobster at a seafood place, you chainsaw down your own tree for the owl you want.
I came to check out the spoted owel and the problem with loging because i seen it on tv Any how the tree huggers where looking for a spoted owels nest so thay can shut off the surounding area to loging thay new if thay can find one thay can shut down production and that chaps my ass. Well there was a serten tree that the owles nest in and thats how thay found the nest is because thay where looking in the type of tree that the owles live in well any ways we can use this to ower advantage -
@gary77777778888888 als we half to do is climb up in the serten tree that spoted owles are found in and check for a nest if there is no nest then we can cut the tree i know it would slow production but it wont stop it and plus the tree hugers wont have as much leverage on us that way eather.
Big timber outbid all the small operators on many public timber sales, forcing many smaller mills under. This helped to consolidate big timbers market position. Im from the NW, the owl is just the patsy.
Close those damn mills down. I am so happy the Roseberg mill is closing. Most of all the old growth timber is gone. You keep cutting and taking and there is very little left. Its nice to see loggers laid off or fired.
yeah is it?? i will remember you shot of your uneducated mouth when your wiping your ass with something other than toilet paper stop using paper products if you dis like loggin so much
mike198748: I don't mean toilet paper. But, to make you look stupid, much of the trees are chipped in the US and shipped to China where it is fabricated into particle board furniture. It is than re-exported back to the US. Plus, I do not support the massive clear cutting of indigenous timber in the U.S. Close those damn mills down or stop exporting our resourses to China. You want it both ways. So, wipe your ass on a china man instead of toilet paper.
make me look bad?? i was just making a statement bonehead, i agree on your statement about exporting but that was not the original conversation, in your mind you may think you made me look bad and thats fine, ita all good cause it take more than the likes of you to do that, and your statement about wiping ass on a china man is nothing more than a raciest statementoh and for your information the mills dont do the exporting the ports do, the mills sell to a customer and they do the rest
your right but the thing to remember the spotted owl is NOT a native of the northwest, the enviromentilists are just using it as a sympathy vote so to speak from people who dont know any better
yeah this is true, but if people would keep their mouthes shut about things they know nothing about i wouldnt be living in vegas now i would be back home where i wanted to raise my babies at instead. my home town is dead. damn shame
the sad fact of the matter is that its not the employees fault and they are ultimately the ones who are impacted the worst... if their employers would have practiced more sustainable forestry techniques then this situation could have been avoided altogether
the practices of today are more sustainable, like most enviromentalists you are dwelling on the past the type your talking about hasnt been done for over a hundred years the forest service and other agencies regulate the industry
i worked with the forest service and know about the regulation of this industry... the thing you may be overlooking is the fact that these old-growth forests are just what the name suggests, old... it takes several years for these forests to obtain the certain characteristics that make them what they are...the past is still very much affecting today's forests and it will take time for these forests to regain their characteristics, unfortunately it may not be in our lifetime... we must be patient
i got my 2009 hippie hunting tag, did you guys get yours? just run down to bimart and pick one up. they score em on the BnC by the size of there welfare check and the size of the bugs crawling around in there dirty ass hair.....long live the logger and there saw
The biggest threat to the Spotted Owl is the expansion of the Barred Owl's range. The Barred owl competes directly with the spotted owl for resources... AKA natural selection. The Barred Owl is winning
please define natural selection for me... From my background in biology and ecology I think its safe to say that the Barred owls presence is most definitely not natural... Humans, through agricultural practices and deforestation, have allowed the barred owl to expand its range to the northwest where the spotted owls critical habitat lies in jeopardy due to unsustainable and destructive forestry techniques
the owls population was already weak due to loss of habitat and the expansion of the barred owl has only added to this sad story. The fact of the matter is the two threats are acting synergistically against the spotted owl
I was a Green knot bunper myself. When logging High lead there is a guy at the landing where all of the logs are taken to load on the trucks. He unhooks the choker or cable used to bring in the log. This is called "Chasing". While waiting for the next log he takes a saw and cuts off any remaining limbs from the logs at the landing. This job is called "Chasing and Bumping knots". The guy doing the job is called a "Green knot Bumper".
I heard spotted owls taste just like Chicken.
Just think how many chickens we could save if we started eating spotted owls.

@renly3, Well what can I say?
Hey, I like the owls, and it would be a shame for them to go exstinct.
But there are loggers to consider as well.
Hey, they shaped the United States as what it is today. The problem is to find a solution to both problems.

well its the old grwoth forest that they want to save and thats where the massive timber is
