Actually Mel Brooks is so anti Racist it's not funny. What's noteworthy Is that the Towns people are utter morons and a Jewish cowboy and A black Sheriff both outsmart everyone in the movie! The whole point when this movie was made was yeah it was brutal but it was about getting things out there, it was still the early 1970s and things were still raw. If anyone watches the movie they'll see it is anything but racist, in fact it targets racism more than anything else and beats it up using satire. Given that one of the writers of the movie was Richard Pryor and Mel Brooks was another, it does that brilliantly. Great writing team, all the contributors.

This is hilarious! @bestrader considering the history of the word it's a little doubtful. The "N" word originates from the latin word for black, and was used as early as the 1600's to describe non-whites, but not in a racist sense. Only in the 1800's was it largely deemed as racist/demeaning as by that time "colored" was the accepted term. It's been around for hundreds of years in some form, so it's unlikely that african-americans or even caucasians will stop using it. Check wikipedia for more on it.

some of the more "racial" lines were written by Richard Pryor. Cleavon Little was great, but I don't know why Pryor didn't play this role.

@smichelle65 Warner Brothers refused Pryor because of his rampant drug use at the time. They wanted someone more reliable to show up on set sober and ready to go. This is also the reason why Gene Wilder was cast....Gig Young was originally cast as the Waco Kid, but because of his alcoholism, WB axed him.

@bestrader considering the history of the word it's a little doubtful. The "N" word originates from the latin word for black, and was used as early as the 1600's to describe non-whites, but not in a racist sense. Only in the 1800's was it largely deemed as racist/demeaning as by that time "colored" was the accepted term. It's been around for hundreds of years in some form, so it's unlikely that african-americans or even caucasians will stop using it. Check wikipedia for more on it.
