Hi, know that the anwsering time of the software was pretty much low and couldn't fallow the real moves. Go check on my videos to see what i can do with a real drum. Sounds much better ;)

And domdom87 is right, it is super hard to feel what you play with the program and the speed of your moves couldn't be well tracked because of the frame rate of the two webcams needed... Go check on my vids with my real drum and then you can bash me like you did for free if you don't like what i do

I don't think it's that easy for a drummer to "play drums" without something tactile to give you some sort of feedback. And on the other side it's difficult to create software to replicate something as sensitive as drum hits (velocity, angle, position)

He doesn't suck idiots. Drummer's muscles are adept to retracting drum sticks within the time signatures. The skin to the drum head bounces the stick back. It's only the down motion. Think of it like a crocodile. Opening the mouth. Same thin with retracting the strike. We rely on the response of the drum head to bounce the stick back after impact.

Agreed to a point. Things such as rolls can be simulated by producing a hit both on the stroke down and the lift back up. While it won't sound nearly as crisp, I believe the point is simply to show that it is possible :).

Impressive technology, but from a musicians perspective, the physical interplay or response between the musician and the instrument to convey human emotion is missing, this abstracts that very necessary process. Still software that would allow 2 or more people to interact with virtual instruments may be very intresting and a lot of fun.

he is good. if you play the drums, the bonce that happens when you hit the drum lets you pick up the stick faster. here, there is no bounce so it takes half a second more to pick the stick up, so its a bit harder.

Moreover I recall that the attempt of V-D is not to replace real Drums but to have fun with a virtual, low-cost kit. Being virtual does not allow rebound, but has other advantages like 3D positionning adaptation, no limit in the number and style of drums, endless custumosition etc... which are not possible en real (like for 2nd life), you do not expect it to wash you...

Yeah the fact that it has no rebound is the main drawback. For the little latency problem it is mainly due to the 30fps acquisition rate. To have a real real-time feedback we would need near 100 fps camera which are very expensive, we wanted something working with webcams.

That's clear that this application should be seen more like a game than a real simulation.

It could be good too for a first hand initiations to drums and rythms like shown on the website with the mini game. Xavier

It's impossible to get a rebound in that.

Only few drummers can control the stick in a way that they don't need rebound. And those are great legends like Buddy Rich and Jojo Mayer.

That guy can be a good player, but what he is doing makes it a lot harder.

the only problem here is that playing drums has a lot to do w/ being able to manipulate the rebound off the drum heads or cymbals, so if you're hitting just air, that ability is pretty much non-existent. Good technology, nonetheless.
