Irish Guards- Cap badge is the shamrock, st patrick's blue plume in the right side of the bearskin, buttons spaced in fours with a harp on each, green band on the forage cap.
Welsh Guards- Cap badge is the leek, a white/green/white plume on the left side of the bearskin, buttons spaced in fives each with a leek, a black/green band on the forage cap
Coldstream Guards- Cap badge is the Star of the Order of the Garter, Red plume on the right side of the bearskin, buttons on the front of the tunic spaced in twos with the garter star on each, White band on the forage cap
Scots Guards- Cap badge is the Thistle, no plume on the bearskin, buttons spaced in threes with a thistle badge on each, a checkered band around the forage cap with no chinstrap.
The 'Queen's Guard' are made up of 5 different regiments: Grenadier Guards, Coldstream Guards, Scots Guards, Irish Guards and Welsh Guards.
Ways of identifying the regiments:
Grenadier Guards- Cap badge is a Grenade, white plume on the left side of the bearskin, buttons on the front of the tunic are all evenly spaced with the royal cypher and small grenade on each, Red band on the forage cap.
I'm guessing you Brits call these different groups of soldiers, 'Regiments'. But, how do you distinguish one 'Regiment' from another. To the uninitiated eye (US Marine),
it's difficult as their uniforms look alike to me. I would guess they wear some sort of device or emblem on their uniforms. What are the Red Dress uniforms called? Chief Warrant Officer, USMC, ret.
@gunner4usmc Well the troops doing this are the Queen's Guard, they are housed at the palace, but you can mostly tell which regiment they are with by the cap Badges they are wearing, The black hats are called Bearskin caps and the uniform is a scarlet tunic
Many different factors. Most noticabley, the colour of the plumes in their bear skins, their button groupings on their tunics and the cap badges on their collars.
