Correct. The inside of the lantern is then painted black and that helps the light stand out more. Some of the light does leak through to the country side- See the Rendlesham Forest UFO mystery!

Nice close-up shots of the lighthouse. It looks as though the light is blocked in the direction of Orford itself.
