Coming from Wabash, Indiana.. it makes me glad that our river is mentioned in this song. I go to this race every year and there is simply nothing like it. 250,000+ people for the 100th running and it was a sight to be seen. The majesty of this race track will never be duplicated. I believe it doesn't matter where you come from. Everyone who attends this race is a Hoosier, for a few hours at least! :D
@Hunkola Did he ever claim to be from Indiana?..I guarantee you ppl that sang "California Here I Come" were not all from California... enjoy the race and smile....oh, and look up the definition of FRAUD...I think it would help you out.
Never realized how lucky I am to get to go to this every year. I've been to 5 and I'm only 14. And props to the All American Marching Band!!! BoilerUP!!
I like Jim, however this song sucks. I'm Paul Dresser- Get with it --On the Banks of the Wabash Faraway is the true song. Be a believer, check this out: Eventide Poetry Music
im from indiana orginally and this gives me chills. im a nascar fan but nothing is more dear to my heart then the indy 500. it all started with me as a kid. ' and rick mears comes off 4 hes going to do it . rick mears wins the indy 500!!'.
Jim Nabors' singing of this song on Indy 500 Sunday is just as much of an American institution as the race itself in my opinion. I look forward to hearing it during the pre-race show again this year!!
I go for the race and the tradition! This will be my 23rd straight and 24th total. I get drunk at the race so don't speak for everyone. I love the 500 and look forward to this weekend more than any other. I will drink a cold one for you as I enjoy another fine Spectacle from the Southwest Vista ya whinebag!
@67nairb I agree... but when it comes down to video's... a video with bad sound and good picture is worse than a video a bit blurry but good sound. true?
I'm a little confused here?? Are you guys saying there are a lot of people drunk there and you go there for that reason, (which I doubt) , or you don't go there because of that.
I am there for the race. I do not drink. I've picked up too many dead drunks on the side of the road or those they killed to say it is OK. Yes, it is sad. But unfortunately, they make it uncormforable with their stupidity for many people who just want to watch the race.
For those of us who have been privileged to see him sing this as well as hear it, it is basically THE reason we go to the race. The race is fine, but the opening ceremonies (especially this part of it) are what make it the event it is. Love you, Jim. If you ever leave Hawaii, you can stay "back home" here anytime you want to!
@susanb6479, Oh yes. There is nothing like hearin Jim sing, witnessing the balloon spectacle, Mari Hulman George giving the command, then the start of the race. Greatest 10-15 minutes in sports.
aAfter watching 25 years plus on TV, I attended my first Indy this year. I was up top between turn 3 and 4. When he started singing, everyone started singing along, not in their owns voice but in baritone like Jim......awesome.
He was even better this year. I loved auto racing when I was a kid, and still like Indy cars--watched the whole race this year. I've always loved Jim Nabors. Andy Griffith Show to Gomer Pyle--my dad didn't watch, but when Jim started singing on Gomer, I ran to the other room and switched the channel because my Dad thought he was a great singer. I always say, Back Home Again In Indiana is Jim Nabors at his most heterosexual (no anti-gay slur here, since his voice shatters any sterotype).
I had the privilege to come down from Canada for the 1984 race. The huge crowds...the history....the ceremonies before the race...the roar fo the cars coming out of turn 4 and down the main straight for the first time....truly amazing. It really is "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing".
Every time I hear Jim Nabors sing that song it makes me smile to think that I've been there and felt the goosebumps !!!
Are you kidding? I live in Houston, Texas now and life has taken me all over the world. When I hear this song, it takes me back home to central Indiana at a time when the month of May WAS the Indy 500!! THANKS FOR POSTING THIS!
As a fellow Hoosier (and DAMN proud of it) I can honestly and truthfully say that next to the race itself, Jim singing this is what I look forward too EVERY May, not to mention my birth month as well. This and few other things make being a Hoosier all that more special
I absolutely agree that Jim is my favorite pre-race moment. I've been going to the race with my dad almos every year since 1986. This is actually my ringtone when my dad calls my cell phone. This will be my first time going to the 500 without him (family obligations)...
my family has been going to indy since the 80's, my dad took to me to my first 500 in 1998 when i was 8 years old and passed away in october of '99 and I've gone to every race ever since. Every time i hear this song i get goose bumps and my thoughts go back to all the races past especially the one and only one I shared with my dad.
brings chills down my spine, what a awesome moment in racing, just moments b4 the start of the indy 500 so much excitment, so much anticipation, i remember watching my first ever indy with my dad at age 5 in 92, and when i hear jim neighbors sing this song each year it brings back so many memories of what truly is the greatest spectacle in racing and the adrenaline starts flowing and i wonder what new memories are about to be created in the next chapter of indy that is just moments from startin
The last Indy 500 that I watched, Jim Nabors did not perform. It was just a bunch of brass and no lyrics. He does have a great voice and I am originally from Indiana so this song means A LOT to me. I love Indiana. Maybe Mellencamp will do it. He could. I met him many times. He was very nice . The first time I met him, he was at Target . I just shook his hand, told him that I loved his music and that I would see him at the Bird in Bloomington. He literally would just pop in and play.
You Hoosiers aren't the only ones tearing up! For me everything that happens at Indy during practice and qualifying happens in the Spring. Raceday is when SUMMER starts for me. Jim Nabors is the voice that welcomes it in. I've missed the 500 twice since 1974 and its still the highlight of the year.
I agree. I am voting that Mellencamp does it. He is from Indiana and loves it. I met him many times when I was at IU as a student Very nice guy. I never asked for an autograph and never went all "ga ga" over him. He is human. He still has a home in Brown County. He could do it but not as well as Jim.
I love this song and the 500! Spend the weekend in Indy around the track, cold beer, fast cars and being a hoosier NOTHING COMPARES! I cant wait till this years race! Love it
I learned the words to this song in the 4th grade and I sing along with Jim every race day. Hard to get through it without choking up. When Jim passes the torch I hope the replacement gives it the same dignity that he does.
I am from Indiana, and every year when Jim sings this at the 500, I do tear up as he puts so much passion into the song that I thought he was from Indiana. I really can't imagine the thought of anyone singing this but Jim. While it is a nice tradion having the song sung before the race, I don't think there is anyone who could do it justice. Florence Henderson tried, but it just wasn't the same.
Echo every positive comment. Parents went to THE race in '36; been going since '55; Jim Nabors is the best; the balloons, fireworks, taps, and all the other traditions make this so uniquely American. I hope it never changes. Too bad Tony Hullman's not around to give the famous command. Thanks for posting.
It's worth the 6 hour trip to the track just to hear Jim sing this song. Indy is such an amazing event. It's more than just a race, it sums up what being an American is. Can't wait for 2009
He is the only one that can do this song the way he does...he makes the race complete. No one could duplicate the way he does it and the way he makes you feel.
"There are only 3 times in a man's life when it is ok to cry in public. The death of a loved one, the graduation of a child, and immediately following Jim Nabor's rendition of "Back Home Again in Indiana" at the 500."- Kevin Olson
I so agree with you there, and I need to add one to the list. The marriage of a daughter. Honestly when this man passes away, I seriously think they will need to retire this song as well because no one does it justice like Jim Nabors.
Jim...if you read this..."oh My Papa" from the GP show NEEDS to be posted on YouTube...please !!! Your version of it was one of the most moving songs ever recorded.
I was there it was so much fun!! I also cannot believe that Danica was clipped, i think thats her luck! anyway, it seems like the nicest people in america come from the mid-west and alot around Indiana
It's just not the same without Jim. I've been to the 500 since I was 8. I've known the lyrics to three songs since then, Jesus Loves Me, American Pie, and Back Home Again In Indiana. It's a tradition that will never get old with me!
Always the best part of the day. During the prerace the people I was with were still kind of chatty, but the second they go to Jim Nabors, everyone stops and watches the TV in silence.
100,000 views...THANK YOU ALL.

I get goosebumps every time I see this... The most moving part of Indy build-up, at least for me.

For anyone who grew up in Indiana, this has to get you deep inside.
This is my favorite version of the song--especially since Jim is backed by the AAMB!

It's just not the same without Jim. I've been to the 500 since I was 8. I've known the lyrics to three songs since then, Jesus Loves Me, American Pie, and Back Home Again In Indiana. It's a tradition that will never get old with me!

The "Greatest Spectacle in Racing" was even better this year with the return of Jim Nabors. Not a dry eye where we sat!

Always the best part of the day. During the prerace the people I was with were still kind of chatty, but the second they go to Jim Nabors, everyone stops and watches the TV in silence.
