Here is a woman who really knows how to work with the orchestra to create great comic moments. She knows that they're there to help her and it's just exquisite how she uses them!
I got to see Loudon three times in this role. She was magnificent. Early on, she made it clear that she was in charge and that it was going to be very hard to pull off the scheme she had hatched to get Sweeney. This fed the tension that builds throughout the evening and really increased the tragedy for Lovett. I liked her in the role far more than Lansbury. Loudon's 'Nothing's Gonna Harm You' was chilling. You could see the moment where she decided that Toby had to die.
Thank you for this amazing peek back in time to what we're not supposed to see. Unfortunately, these lost performances are never supposed to be filmed for posterity. It's certainly not as good as being there, but I'll watch absolutely anything with Dorothy Loudon.
I'm mixed on this performance. In some ways I think it's great, but in other ways I think she overdoes it. Yes, Lovett is supposed to be over the top, esp. in this scene, but I think Dorothy goes a little TOO over later in the song. It almost seems like she could be doing a parody of "Worst Pies in London"; this looks like it'd be at home on the Carol Burnett Show or something. But otherwise, it's an interesting, different take on the number.
Absolutely. This was miles away from how I've seen anyone else play Mrs. Lovett. I'm thrilled that somebody put up a few clips of her in "Sweeney." I've wanted to see her in it since I read how great her performance was. "Could have originated the role," the critics said. I'm happy to see they weren't just blowing smoke up my ass. Great performance!
What a joy to see. I saw Angela Lansbury in the role 43 thime. Unfortunately, I saw Miss Loudon only once, and that was her closing matinee performance. How I loved her portrayal. Thank you so much for posting.
OH MY GOD THIS EXISTS?!
IS THIS MY LIFE?! *tears of joy* Dorothy is AMAZING.

interesting, much funnier than Angela, but not as sublimely cast - it's a draw.

Of Angela, Dorothy, and Patti, Dorothy does the best job with this song. She is fantastic. Miss you : (

Oh, and the rather "country western"-ish way she sings "Worst PAH's in LUuUndon. . ." REEEEAALLY grates on me. But, oh well.

The definitive performance of the song! Nothing sweet at all--brash, dirty, lusty and FUNNY!
