Reminds me of my IFR in a 182 that was just BELOW clouds about half the way; about a half hour. It was smooth on the bottoms. Like a knife had smoothed the clouds. I did a pirep and told the controller "my exhaust pipe is out of it, but my wing is in it". I asked for higher as it was making my wife ill.
@MaxPayne19146 In the RAAF's case you need to have atleast 6/12 (or 20/40) vision uncorrected to be accepted as a pilot, the rest can be corrected with glasses. In all other fields if its corrected to 6/6 its fine.
@captainmorgan757 This made me laugh! :D Now as much as I love Boeing, it doesn't matter which aircraft it is, as long as it gets me to my destination safely, i'm always happy!
Fly4fun isn't this at the period you were doing the same flight over and over again at St thomas so you didn't bring your camera and you used the flip-video?
It was a while ago, but I seem to remember we were descending through the 20 something. I only film above 10,000 feet, so I know we were higher than that.
Occasionally there my be some turbulence associated with the clouds. We'd then request a different altitude. But if it's smooth we'd just enjoy the view.
Isn't that just grand? I had a helicopter pilot take me and my dad up to 12,500 feet to watch the sunset above the clouds, and on the way back, we got to cloud skim. It is just awesome...
I dont think there is enough moisture in the clouds to actually do any harm to the engines. Think about all the flights that have gone out and came in during thunderstorms. Its dangerous but it can be done.
Beautiful. I saw something similar on a Delta MD88 flight to BOS. We were cruising a few thousand feet above cloud cover, but it felt like we were flying 50 feet above a some frozen landscape, as if the clouds were snow.
I could understand where most get the idea that pilots do nothing. But... the people that say that (and no offense) are the ones that aren't very educated on what a pilot does, or has to do to become one, and so forth, and so on.
I agree rdiddie, but you need to read the comment itsanthonyhere was commenting on himself. It had NOTHING to do with the job of a pilot, but rather how Carterboyy hates the adds that YouTube has put on some of their videos. Jus sayinng to read before assuming its what someone is ranting about =)
Ive noticed reading, and then actually comprehending someone's comment, and the circumstances it was made under. Seems to be FAR beyond 99.99% of youtuber's mental capabilities.
Great video, I was working at ATA as a mechanic about 10 years ago and was deadheading on a 57 from Charleston SC to Midway in Chicago and we were cleared to 10,000 at virtually the same time of day. We were right at the cloud tops doing 300 kts for a good 3 or 4 minutes. Thanks for evoking the memory.
Wow thats beautiful! You don't see that everyday. By the way, what's a good way to learn how to read and use IFR charts, such as SID and ILS? It's a bit of a learning curve, ;)
Download old ones, or buy jeppview for example. Depends on your learning style. I'm at my best figuring things out myself. Is it for Flight Sim? I try and find as much official material as I can to study for myself. Learned a lot in the past 4 weeks, barely "cheat" with gps in flight sim anymore. Didn't find navigation that hard, currently studying CAA's radio comm manual to improve my atc comms. KLM won't take me for sponsorship though, highschool was a bad time so I don't have correct diploma
Very cool video. I'd love too do that, seems really fun. I remember flying once when i was travelling home from Canada and the pilot decided too show us a few things as in two layers of cloud, we flew in between them and i must it was amazingly cool.
Hope for more videos in the future. I'm saving this one and i'll add you as a friend.

Before TCAS, it was probably a bit risky, especially over New York or Chicago. Never knew when the fin of another shark may jump out of the water...LOL
I guess you've never heard of required IFR separation? The required VFR cloud separation requirements alone would keep the non participating aircraft away from skimming. TCAS is a realatively new tool. ATC has been around much longer
If operating on an IFR clearance, in controlled airspace, and under ATC control... ATC provides aircraft separation, whether or not you're in the clouds.
For the complete regulations concerning basic VFR minimums, look-up FAR 91.155. So you don't go home empty handed, here's a sample. Aren't I a nice guy?
Class E: Below 10,000' MSL (Mean Sea Level(not as in cruel)), 3 statute miles of visibility, 500' below clouds, or 1,000' above, or 2,000' horizontal.
Class E: Above 10,000' MSL, 5 statute miles of visibility, 1,000' below clouds, or 1,000' above, or 1 mile horizontal.
Yes ! Thank you for this clip - In a smaller plane and slower speed, you can 'fly the white sand' of cloud cover. When conditions are perfect, the boundary between the cloud and clear air is so solid, it looks like you are flying a dune buggy on perfect white sand.....a must see.

MaxPayne19146 1 year ago
@MaxPayne19146 Perhaps in the fighter pilot world. But flying for an airline (at least in the U.S.) only requires vision correctable to 20/20.

@fly4fun Well, in Canada, it has to be correctable to 20/30

Dear All,
I have some question about psychology:
*why do we love flying and being in the sky?
*Why do we relate flying with our full potentials and with our successes?
*Why do we use the phases "take off" and "fly high" as a kind of adjectives to describe our success of our hard working?
*Why do we used the word "runway" as a expression of optimistic future of a person/ a team?
*Why do we relate aviation with freedom?
THANK YOU IN ADVANCE for your creative ideas and brainstorm.

I wouldn't think it's dangerous. Maybe for a Cessna 172 but not for an airliner. Their designed to handle the weather as well as harmless clouds.
joemccormick 2 years ago
it's a little dangerous, clouds restrict visibility
cornskid 2 years ago
does that matter on 30,000 feet.
even when there are a lot of aircrafts in the sky the pilots can see them on their TCAS.

matters a little to a lot, visibility is allways importent
