This is an extremely poor example of doing a brake reline! If all you care about is cost, then go ahead and follow this garbage. If you care about doing it properly, being able to spot potential problems, and want your new pads to last more than a month, get a $25 repair manual from an auto parts store and read it first. There is so much more to doing a proper brake reline than this video shows.
You are both wrong. The end of the video shows both brake pads are BLACK. It's called a fastcut. You simply repeat replacing the brake pad on the other side. Use your eyeballs.
It sucks, i had a chainlock but was too small to try, got a bigger one since i do not have an autoparts around. But the experience of taking it out and putting it back makes me happier 'cause I know it is not an enigma to cry it loud. They charge 30 dollars per side around here
i love it! I can do this on my own............every male I asked made it sound complicated......needed an overpriced proffesional............yaw......I don't have that kinda money...but I do have the tools, ha!....got quotes.......bought the parts.......then, I found you.......thanks! You will so be highly recommended!
should have showed in the vid to put grease on the bracket where the pads slide, grease the sliders and said make sure the pads move freely in the bracket
@covergirlx2i5 The reason for the old brake pad is simply to push the two pistons back in as this car has. While it close to you, your aswel to use it. And thats the motto to use :D
I don't understand why he did the last step. Putting the old pad in and turning it like that. Not a bad vid, but I wish people would explain why their doing what their doing.
@tigergreg8 I don't know a lot about cars at all but was he widening the caliper possibly? Like I said I don't know that much about cars, so if this sounds dumb just forget I said anything haha.
@XjoshhyX I think your right, When I look again, it does appear he is trying to widen it for some reason, Maybe that is how it is reset in order to fit back in. Thanks) You have a good sense of humor btw. hehe.
@tigergreg8 you arent supposed to do that with a brake pad, you're supposed to have a special "mount" for it, so that you push the piston all the way to the back, that way when you put everything together and you pump your brakes (10-20 times) it will be perfectly calibrated
Great video, saved 150 dollars and got it done by myself. Its been a good learning exercise..to top it all up my caliper just had one bolt to be undone while the other was acting like a hinge joint(it didnt have a bolt). Good old subaru Liberty design ae. At the end of the day only spent 55 dollars to get it all done. Thanks Tom
@tepenene69 AFAK, caliper bleeder must not be opened as you're pushing the braking fluid back in the reservoir, if you open it you'll push it out of the bleeder->lost brake fluid and possible airbubbles in your brake lines '-.-
@WeRideTonite If u r a profesional u must do it, u have to lock the brake hose whith a hose clamp, other wise u pushing al the corrosion in to the master cylinder or abs system doing this for 20 years have any problems whith hydraulics & a lot of techs that I have seen no doing that have that problem.
@RaffNTemp As the old brake pad wears down, the piston (that pushes the brake pad against the disc to slow down the car) slowly comes out more. You have to push the pistons back in (impossible to do it by bare hand, so he used that silver tool, $10 at the store). If you don't push the pistons back the caliper will not fit because new brake pads are too thick (compared to the old worn down ones). Hope that made sense! I just learned it too hahahaha
I like your video very much. I've done this before but its always good to have a refresher coarse. Save lots of money on labor doing it myself. Warpped Rotor is causeing my steering wheel to shake when stepping on the pedal. I'll have it resurfaced or buy new ones. Thanks again for your video.
These breaks will SQUEEL!!!!......first of all you need to clean the surface of where the breaks will ride on, then you need to put the proper caliper lubrication on these surfaces (Do not get any on the rotor nor the front of the pads themeselves..then you need to (although some break pads say they already have the anti-noise backing) spray the back of the pads with an anti-noise liquid. it is also nice to put a dab of anti sieze lub on the bolts so they won't seize in place for the next time
Ignoring for the moment that not replacing or refinishing the rotor can cause decreased performance or result in noise (and that new pads alone will NOT fix a pulsation), you need to inform people that the correct way is 1) take at least 1 minute compressing a caliper to avoid damaging filters and valves in the ABS system, 2) Replace the saddle hardware and 3) lube the slide pins with brake silicone lube (NOT petroleum grease). That is the right way.
@TurnerLion He did put a new pad on both sides, I think they just cut the video. You can see both new pads are black compared to the old one which was rust colored.
its not good for the ABS pump when pushing back the brake caliper piston, its best to open the bled screw, and push the piston back while using a bottle and tube to catch the brake fluid, go to my channell [ how to fit brake pads on a td4 freelander land rover] you will see what i mean, good video all the same, liamautomechanic
Good job... would have been better however if you would have replaced "both" pads before remounting the caliper for the viewers to see. And when decompressing the caliper pistons, one might also effectively use a large C-clamp.
@SvenStadt Hey dipshit...take a closer look at the video...they are both in there...he just did not film putting the back set on......open your eyes...you can see they are on there
Not a good idea to use the press if you have ABS, as it can damage the master brake cylinder...it's better to drain the brake fluid from the drain nut on the caliper as you're pressing it in, instead of forcing it back through. I agree with Kovac too...always best to use jack stands and noise reducing lubricant on all the contact points. It's also a good idea to replace all of the hardware whenever you change the pads. Also, machine the rotors only when needed, then follow with a light sanding.
Okay first of all did he use jack stands? Also you should always check the rotor and or replace or have it turned. The rotor is not going to be straight. So if you just "pad slap" it your shortening the life of your pad. Also he should of greased the pins and back of the pads.
@mattisGST I would think you should be able to. As far as I know, there is no safety between where the caliper is and your engine being on. However, why would you want to start it before you put the caliper back on? You'd probably ruin the caliper if you pushed the brake when the pistons have nothing to resist against them.
it is easy as long as you have the right tools. It's good to have some WD-40 in case your bolt sticks. I have a caliper clamp like it and it make it so much easier compare to taking the old pad and a hammer, always check your rotors and pump your brake a few times and release the presure from the bleed valve til no more air bubbles come out so you can stop.
@gracson Bleeding the brakes is a good idea, but you shouldn't have air in them as a matter of routine. If air does come out, you need to look for a leak in the system.
OMG!!! I PAID SOME JERK 250 DOLLARS TO DO THAT????? I'm going to go cry for at least 3 hours now. And I will never look at myself in the mirror again.
@123gwf Before you beat yourself up, look over your invoice. How much LABOR? Yes, you probably paid a significant mark-up on parts, but what did you get? Just pads? What kind? Were the rotors replaced? My average passenger car brake job with new rotors and mid grade pads from NAPA runs my customers $120-$150, $30 of which is labor. Trucks are usually quite a bit more due to parts.
Lets see, no jack stands, pushing the dirty fluid back into the master (Near future failure) no cleaning or lube on contact points (you'll hear this one squeeeeek) nothing measured or checked...is it safe? Only 23 of 27 steps to do the job properly skipped. Hey it's only your brakes, wonder if that "E" brake works.
(about the auto insurance advertisment that came on before the video started & show's a Motorcycle crashing w/o a rider & then text saying "a Motorcycle Never Crashes Alone".) THAT'S BULLSHIT, Anyone who says that has never either been in or to a Beginner/pre-novice 250 (4-Stroke) class Motocross Race. I've seen kids let go of their bikes, land on his feet, while his Honda CR125R took off & flew 65-Feet (Height) in the air & clear a 80-Foot (Distance) triple that wasn't ever meant to be a triple
He forgot to grease it before putting the brake pads in. So i disagree this is not a good video it can make the caliper cease and then have problems with ur car again.
Q: 1974 For gran Torino, Not S/H. Mine is better. lol,
My fender is hanging over top of wheel, Front end pops a little both sides, going over speed bumps. Only pulls right when tire is low on air, Tires have no wear on them. What could this be a problem from, Also, It has a sqeak in rear, Vibrates a little while on the gas, Any Ideals. Thanks. Snow.
If you know that the rotor is not overworn, or gouged and all you need to do is replace the pads, then this video is very good.
Too often people only realize their brakes are done when they have a grinding feeling and noise coming from the brakes, when applied. That usually indicates the pads are gone, and the metal backing is grinding into the rotors. More steps and more money to fix right.
If your brakes aren't fixed properly, you could void your insurance. Be careful what you are doing.
he made it look easy and its not that easy for a beginner. i push the caliper back with a c - clamp. But my mother actually told me what to do so it must be easy .... it just took me all day.
Remember to remove the reservior cap first, as you could spray brake fluid over the car when you push the piston back. Add an anti-seize grease to the back and top of the brake pad to avoid seizure and squeal. Remember to use torque settings when tightening bolts.
This video is a great example of how not to do a brake job. 90% of the steps to do a brake service correctly were not done. It is this type of service that will lead to all sorts of problems, and complaints. Most of the accepted professional trade standards in servicing brakes are also violated here, causing potential safety problems. The correct methods can be found online at professional sites. This guy poses a danger to the industry and his customers. ? Do you want cheap or correct?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow

No.. all you need is enough to hold the pads against the calipers piston not
too much glue...when next time you change them they should come off easy.
@dammitcrap
Lubricating the bolts is very important because you want the bolts to slid
back and forth easily..."not to be dry".and yes the caliper bolts.
Any high temperature caliper lube will do just fine.
Are you an installer?

Be careful what you are doing.

is there a better tool to use to remove a pad from a cliper than a C-clamp? whats it called?
kemshifarm 1 year ago
he made it look easy and its not that easy for a beginner. i push the caliper back with a c - clamp. But my mother actually told me what to do so it must be easy .... it just took me all day.

i did this on a car like 2 years ago forgot how to do it lol
TylertheGeek28 1 year ago
i agreed he didnt show the last pad but u can see the new 2 pads on its simple like the 1 to replace not hard thx nice video
adelonic1 2 years ago
Remember to remove the reservior cap first, as you could spray brake fluid over the car when you push the piston back. Add an anti-seize grease to the back and top of the brake pad to avoid seizure and squeal. Remember to use torque settings when tightening bolts.
gs5774 2 years ago 12

This video is a great example of how not to do a brake job. 90% of the steps to do a brake service correctly were not done. It is this type of service that will lead to all sorts of problems, and complaints. Most of the accepted professional trade standards in servicing brakes are also violated here, causing potential safety problems. The correct methods can be found online at professional sites. This guy poses a danger to the industry and his customers. ? Do you want cheap or correct?

I never use american car mechanics to do maintenance work on my cars. I always changed every thing including mufflers. The only time I took my car was to weld a piece on the exhaust and I was watching the fuker like a hawk. Do your own work, never trust american anything.
ZaphedBeebleBrox 2 years ago
here in mexico nobody tell you how to do it yourself ....mechanics in mexico sucks,,,they only want more money for his pocket hahahaha...
good video man thanks for the advice...
