I still think that getting on ball earlier (in higher position) can compensate poor strokes as much as good strokes can compensate for bad footwork somewhat. Maybe footwork stands out because we are all watching the backhand smash from guy in black and do not pay attention to the white so much and then 1:06 minute of the video occurs where you can evidently see that guy in white totally misses on basics of movement on the court.
His stroke issues are much more of a problem - even his lifts (when he barely has to move at all!) are well short of the rear tram line. A good stroke can compensate for poor footwork to some extent, good footwork achieves nothing with a poor stroke!
I don't know why people are commenting on footwork it had nothing to do with white guy getting hammered. His constant weak clears to the mid court just give guy in black to much time, and too many options hence the fancy backhand cross court smashes etc. a good clear should send your opponents feet out the back of the court, i don't even think guy in black was forced into the rear tramlines. Completly unnacceptable clearing that far short, even with good footwork he'd still get beat doing that!
Footwork is basis to get your position right and on shuttlecock in time. If guy in white improved his speed and footwork technique he would be able to reach shuttle earlier and in higher position. This would also greatly improve his clearing, cutting and deception ability.
Respect for backhand smash. You really nail it. I wish I had such a natural feel with racket on backhand (I rarely use it though). Still a lot to do on foot work and raquet position when moving. You let your racket drop after every shot and playing with an opponent with more technical quality and powerplay abilities (based on the video the guy in white has totally wrong footwork and does not have smash and defending abilities) can present a big problem.
What standard are you playing at? County? The white guy is a very good play, but h'es playing with very well with the WRONG technique. This is why you thrashed him :)
@beatworkaholic your backhand is sooo awesome! you know, i match your backhand smash video for motivation to cont'd doing backhand smashes! and now i've almost got it and its improved a lot! I'd really like to thank you for motivating me to do backhand smashes like you! :D :D
