finlaly found the song. i haven't watch the highlander movie but just finished watching all the seasons in the youtube !! ,xD. and yes this is the fitting song for depatuer of Duncan from this era. didnt like the abrupt ending of the series but thats how the show business is i guess. if you like to watch all the sesons or any particular episode, search as "highlander episodes" and then click the one with the user id "NewVideoDigital".
I love the original Highlander movie and the series, but two little comments I would make. 1) Bonny Portmore is an Irish song lamenting the demise of Ireland's old Oak Forests, and 2) The MacLeod's land was in the Western Isles, nowhere near Glenfinnan... Ironically, Eilaen Donnan Castle, which was used as the setting for Glenfinnan in the film, is much nearer to the Western Isles than Glenfinnan.
Still a great song and a great fim / TV series though.
I first heard a version of this in the last episode of Highlander: The Series, and fell in love with the song. Then I heard this version in Highlander 3, and fell in love with this version. Such a beautiful song.
@thetrueprometheus Honestly it is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. Sometimes I think it is the best song ever but then I think Mummers Dance is, then I think Lady of Shallott is, then I think The Old Ways is ......
i am a celt and this is just to put it simply AMAZING!!!!! her voice and all is simply beautiful and before somebody says something celt is NOT JUST IRELAND its both the EMERALD ISLE and BONNY SCOTLAND...
@Pbrock67 Actually the Celtic lineage can be traced to several countries of the European mainland as well as the Celts originate from an area between the Alps and the Schwarz Walt in Germany. Ireland and Scotland are the only countries (sadly) where the Celtic influence has maintained a strong presence.
I'm planning out a tour as we speak - From England up to Scotland then from there to Northern Ireland down to Southern.
I'm planning on doing it on a Motorbike (if good weather holds while I go from England to Scotland). I am going to video the whole experience as much as I can as well.
My grandfather was in WWII USN my dad in Vietnam USA I was in the gulf war USN and my son in Iraq USMC We all lived but when get together we cry for are brother in arm that did not made it back when heard this song we all started to cry and could not stop because we who live will carry those we left behind in are heart forever we are irish and proud.
Although I'm not Irish, I AM of the highlands. I've never been to lands of my clan, music takes me there where I may, at the very least, dream of what may be there.
'Tis the dream of this Scotsman to one day visit home. In the meantime, I let music take me there, to the highlands of Scotland, to let my soul run free.
@darkheart1776 - If you've been there darkheart - as best as you can, tell me what it's like. I, too, think of Scotland and the Highlands when I hear the pipes tugging at my soul.
@Rainmaker65 - I've been to Scotland and Ireland, I'm from England myself but Scotland was amazing I went to an island called Rossie looking off the coast you just see mountains in the mist it's breath taking. I prefer Ireland though I've been around 7 times now and it's just beautiful and break taking. Every turn round the road you see lakes, streams, rivers, mountains, hills, fields, green, woodland. I'm a Horticulture landscaper maybe I just take more interest in countryside beauty.
this is pretty much the anthem for everything long standing that gets destroyed. from the literal, to the figurative, to the emotional...even heart, and soul, and sanity itself.
@Fureyn You, you just had to had to do it didn't you? You couldn't just say "pop fans" could you? No you had to bring that name in here. I suppose it's my fault really for asking the question, encouraging that kind of response. I'd just like to never see/hear that name or any of the others ever again. My attitude is, if we'd all just ignore them they'd all go away in some way or another.
@CarbonBasedAndroid sorry to upset you Android; unfortunately not enough people are ignoring these "pop singers"; they're not ignoring "reality tv" either; what does that say about the general level of intelligence in the world?
I've always loved this song beacuse of the melody, but after I read the lyrics I love it even more. To stop deforestation is close to my heart. I hate when a single tree is cut down
we gave the trees away to sin............along with the animals............Jesus thank You for REDEEMING US, may we turn ti Him,the only one who bled for us,and let ho man come in between true love such as Him.
@LordMalice6d9 Every culture and nation has a beautiful history :) be proud what your ancestors are and be also interested in your own culture and you will find that you have also tremendous tunes and beautiful flawless melodies:). and if I might ask where are you from?? remember that all of the northwestern, middle eastern and further southwestern Europe was inhabited by the Celts, so there is a chance that your blood does have a mixture of many cultures including that of Celts :). :)
@LordMalice6d9 You wish you were Celtic? Your either a nordish viking or a celtic warrior in some parts of your blood. They fought and raped with all nations of the world during their epoch of time.

Its a sad and haunting song, more so when you think that the forrest where destroyed to build ships of the line for the Royal Navy.... she has a awsome voice, and some great Sean-nós singing.

@pres921, you are reading exactly into the song what is there.....sure, the subject may be trees, but the object is the loss of a thing once beloved. When I listen to this song, I use it to test and strengthen myself, like you, against the mistakes I have made or those that were made against me. Ich bin froh das ich damals herausbekam, wer dieses tolle Lied gesungen hat (Serie Highlander). Tolle Stimme, sehr einfühlsam und beeindruckend. Habe sie 2x in Hamburg erlebt. :o)
You know, my dad was Scottish and i am not, but lets not argue, thats how wars continue, because people can't understand how to live for today, our children and children's children don't need to fight, because we couldn't find it in our hearts to forgive for something that was such a long time ago in the past, yes the past that part of our life that is well behind us. Live for today, life is too short
Love this song and she sings it beautifully. I had my childhood woodland paradise thorn up and burned down to make room for a factory. I feel the pain of the song writer as he laments the death of something with such meaning. "For the oak and the ash, they are all cutted down."
This is a beuatiful song...so haunting...and so full of ghosts of the past....but one I love to listen to over and over bcause of them...the images feelings....so wonderful.
Sorry friend, but IF that tree was not destroyed, this song would never been written. And same goes from everything: destruction, war, death, crimes are all necessary. Without them there would be no civilization, no art, no sad stories, no songs. Just monkeys having fun under big old trees. Because monkeys don't wage wars. Would you like that? I prefer the way it is :)

@leoncio41 People are a lot like diamonds. We have so many different sides, we are complex. Which side is strongest? Only time can tell.

@leoncio41:

@darddalgard Monkeys don't wage war? The so-called lower primates attack each other with the same relish as humans do each other! ;)

@barnstormer66
Attacking each other is not same thing as war. The war is a highly social, coooperative and an extremely intelligent activity.

@darddalgard when you have seen kids limping about the place missing legs or hands then come back and say that war is necessary.
