  • Gawsh. I just want to hug her. :)))

  • its amazing how stupid and horrible ppl were in 97. These ppl would be charged with a hate crime now

  • God, the world has changed so much for 15 years! And in a better way!...

  • People are super narrow-minded, like that hoe at the end. It's not Ellen's fault that she doesn't want to tell her stupid kid.

  • this blonde woman from the audience is soo annoying, because she never hears ellen out! her point is so rediculous, that nobody wouldnt wanna know, because the press wouldnt have made such a big deal out of that otherwise, and she herself wouldnt be so upset about that, if she ''didn't care''

  • This is why Ellen has her own show now. She's so smart and well spoken. The way she calmly handles the questions is fantastically brave.

  • Lmao "time has been asking to get in touch with you." I live Ellen!!! NOH8!!

  • Us gay people feel like we have to "come out" because for some reason the whole world thinks that everyone is straight unless we do come out and say that we're not. If straight people were confused for gay people, they'd also want to come out and say that they're not... and would the gay community have a right to judge that? No, because we all have blood coursing through our veins and should be allowed to be happily aware of who we are and be allowed to share our love and passion to the world.

  • :D looovvvvveeeee uuuuuuuuuuu Ellen. You make the world a better place

  • wow people are so ignorant... just let everyone be happy with who they are... being straight isnt 'normal'... we have multiple men and women on the planet which enables them to love and be attracted to any of them, not just the opposite sex... people cant help it, it's natural, just like its natural for straight people to be attracted to the opposite sex.

  • "TIME has been asking how to get in touch with you" lmaooo that'll shut that lady up

    <3 Ellen

  • Ellen is amazing! :)

  • i think ellen handled herself very well, no one cares, thats bullshit if no one cares, people wouldnt have a problem or issues with it. my sister was six and she asked my mam what gay was, my mam just explained it simply when i girl loves a girl or a man loves a man, no big issue, simple, next thing she was running up our street screamin im gay with karen........lol!

  • At this point in Ellen's life, I wish she had known how beautiful of a life she would have and how much people would respect her, and even more so how she would fall in love with such an amazing person and have everything she wanted.

  • best thing ever..."because it is ok"

  • seriously i would tell that annoying woman "maybe your husband puts up with you, but im not gonna put up with you barking at me , im not married to you!

  • I love ellen...such an inspiration to me<3

  • because it's okay. line of the century

  • Time has been asking to get in touch with you! Love Ellen

  • this looked hard for her. i'm glad she's made such a success for herself.

  • Personal Best was the worst lesbian movie ever.

  • I just want to punch the women at the end in the face

  • I wonder if the lady at the end is crapping her pants with what they show NOW 2012, in magazines and tv shows.lol

  • being gay it is not a lifestyle choise as many people think it is.LIfestyle choise is like desciding to be a sailor or antique dealer

  • Ellen speaks truth with humor. That's why she's soooo awesome to watch.

  • @ImAWizardMkay Me too

  • WHY THEY SO HARD ON HER! Why, to be honest, its her life, they are screaming at her because she is who she is. Get off her case. If they are all like 'it's your business.. blahblahblah' why they screaming at her. Ellen, we love you for who you are, gay or straight you are amazing :)

  • I love how Ellen is just so chill answering that lady's questions.

  • I think its nescessary because Ellen had to live with that pain in her heart. Ellen YOU WERE BORN THIS WAY!

  • i love ellen!!

(tht lady at the end needs a punch in the face)

  • "Time has been asking how to get in touch with you" xD

    I love Ellen!

  • I wish I was swinging from chandeliers and having sex all the time.

  • i bet that woman at the end is kicking herself nowadays mwah ha ha haaaaa :D

  • Oh look how nervous she was! She's come such a long way, big love for Ellen!

  • "I tell you Melissa, I thought about it, for far too long I've been thinking I might be doing something like this and I thought to myself 'no-huh, I can't do that'. I finally figured what the hell, I might as well do it, I mean, look at you..." love Ellen!!

  • I lovee ellen! seriouslyy get over it peopleee! gay, straight, wateverrr... love is lovee! .. love yourself and love others... no big deal.

  • We need people like Ellen to be role models. When I came out there was only a good friend of mine who came out to be bisexual and without her I still wouldn't have come out!!! Because I wouldve been alone. There were no (openly) gay people in my environment and who wants to be the only one being bullied and stuff?

  • Oh my gooosh, that woman in the end..........

  • @milleevb thats the ellen i know! she didnt let the woman in the end put her down! she is sooo strong

  • Lady at the end was a major BITCH!

  • That woman was being so rude to Ellen.

  • i would have punched that bitch in the face lol no but i have a daughter and i will definately want her to know what gay is me and my husband are straight yes, but if she is gay as she gets older at least she wont be all confused :/ i'd hate if she were to marry a guy have kids then realise shes gay best to teach your kids about this

  • @StaceyNicolePaine thankyou!!! I guess you're a great mom! open-minded and loving!

  • way to go ellen........

  • awww this makes me cry :'(

  • A lot of young people have no idea Ellen was a pioneer, and the things she dealt with. The ignorant woman probably didn't bother Ellen; people connected to the sitcom were recieving death threats & someone tried to kill Ellen by hiding a bomb on her sitcom set. Thankfully they found it & it was mistimed. Oprah recieved the most hate mail of her career, and think of all the controverisal topics she has covered. Some folk are mental :/

  • @Blue3940 I didn't know all of that happened. It breaks my heart. :( I'm so happy that, 14 years later, Ellen is allowed to be happily married and LBGTQ is as accepted as it is. Yes, it's not perfect. But I'm glad people can be fine with Oprah accepting gays and lesbians, and Ellen can host her new show without ....bombs and death threats. :(

  • Ellen knows how to shut down her critics with a joke #pow

  • "Because it's okay. It is okay." Goodness I love her. Such a wonderful role model.

  • Woman at the end: BITCH.

  • @natlongrox True that! Hate that bitch! If she didn't want her dumb brat being influenced by "gay ellen" on the magazine, she shouldn't have bought the effin magazine! How the hell is it Ellen's fault? Stupid bitch.

  • @natlongrox she is indeed and thank you for saying that on my behalf! :')

I can't help but conclude that she is so GAY... Homophobia is gay that's it, that's her the woman @6:50

  • i forget the 90s even existed, got Ellen!

  • go ellen ! u did a brave thing for all women

  • Screw that person at the end.

  • "I'm not on the cover sayin, 'Yep, I'm straight!' Nobody wants to know, nobody cares! I don't care!"

Well, girlfriend, she's on The Oprah Winfrey show telling the entire country about it. So I think it's safe to say that SOMEONE cares.

  • These videos are inspirational and Ellen is amazing, but I feel like we shouldn't be hating on the woman at the end of the video. I bet Ellen has forgiven her. They seem to have had a nice conversation about it, which is important in mending things like this. I don't know any results, but Ellen may even have convinced her to accept being gay.

    Ellen, ÿöü àrè bēāūtīfūł. :_^}

  • What a beautiful human being

  • the bitch at 6:51 needs to shut the hell up. if your that concerned about your kids finding out about todays society just tell them that they will find out when their older. its not ellens fault that the story was everywhere. she came out because she wanted to. and people like you are the reason that it is so hard for everyone else to be as brave as she was.

  • That woman was a major cunt.

  • The best thing about all this is when Ellen starts talking about what she wants in her life (3:49) and you realize that she has it all right now. Just goes to show you... ♥

  • YES! BECAUSE IT IS FUCKING O.K. FUCK YES ELLEN.

  • I LOVE Ellen, she is awesome. She's a better person than all the homophobic.

  • sorry, what does it mean when she says time has been asking you how to get in touch with you

  • I'm so happy she has Portia now:)

    They're perfect.

  • If there's one thing I swear I'm going to do when I have children, it's raising them to believe that there is no closet to come out of. Just a girlfriend or a boyfriend to introduce me to, and that it doesn't matter which one it is.

  • Such a wonderful woman.

  • Leave Ellen alone. She has the purest heart

  • What a stupid, sad woman. Poor Ellen, that was having her moment and having to listen to that stuff....That lady's reaction can only have two possible answers, one: she's just an empty, stupid person; two: she's gay too.

  • They should give Ellen a troll face at the end. She seriously pwned that woman

  • 2 people clicked wrong buttons!!!HEY!!!

  • Damn I never knew Ellen went through such a rough time, I was in 4th grade when this all occurred.

  • ImBeautifullyTragicx took the words right out of my mouth. why the hell do gay people have to "hide in closets"??? straight people don't have to... WHATS THE DIFFERENCE????? they're just freaking people too who just happen to love people that society isn't used to. guess what society? ITS 2011 GET F*CKIN USED TO IT! thanks :) <3

  • Hey lady at 7:00 It's gonna be a rough 14 years for you.

  • It doesnt matter if your Straight, Bisexual or Gay .. or what color skin you are, we are all people we just had different personalities, accents, languages .. from a different country, but we are all people.. and there is nothing wrong if your gay.. im a lesbian yeah im from the UK and iv left school and i still get bullied but i dont care now back in school i was like why do i have to be gay! but now im like.. What? shut up.. or why u wanna bit (; jokingly .. i dont care now. im me! luv u Ellen

  • Why is it anyone's business who someone else shags?? Thats always confused me. . .

  • My heart goes out to Ellen and everyone who was in that position. man I wish I would've been born a bit earlier. I would have been their first supporter and I would've fought!

  • uuugh that lady is pathetic u dont care if ellen is gay well i dont care u dont care!! why do people have to be so harsh!!

  • im sorry but the human race is fuck up because of those people who feel that gay and lesbian people are stupid and crazy, they are the same as you and me just they like the same sex. what is wrong with that????

  • That lady Ellen was talking to at the end is a dumbass lol 13 years later her kids now 23 he could be gay...

  • Ellen says to the ignorant woman at the end who's shouting that no one needs to know that she's heterosexual "Time has been asking how to get in contact with you". Excellent response Ellen! Absolutely excellent. Sometimes when people are that ignorant, trying to reason gets you no where. Showing them their stupidity in a tactful and humoristic way, just priceless. That shut her up and the audience with their applause let her know that she was being a fool.

  • "He should know!!!!!" Loooove that line. I bet that woman would have pissed her pants if she found out that her son was gay one day. Those who protest the loudest.......

  • It is okay Go Ellen!

  • 3:48-4:03 - And years later, she met Portia :)

  • wow that one woman was annoying

  • WE WERE BORN THIS WAY!

  • Why should gay people have to come out? I mean, straight people don't have to declare "I'm straight" at any point in their lives. Everybody's sexuality should be equally accepted and nobody should assume what a person's sexuality might be, or put pressure on anyone to reveal theirs. Everybody should be free to pursue any relationship they wish because it IS ok.

  • @ImBeautifullyTragicx This is why I'm not actually out as bisexual to my parents. I know they'd be totally cool with it. I'm out to my friends because we talk about sex and relationships and stuff often but I never really do with my parents so it's never come up. If I get a girlfriend at some point then I'll bring her home to meet the parents and I know it'll be fine.

  • @ImBeautifullyTragicx ya know, my best friend ''came out'' while she is straight, to kinda announce me to make it kinda more easy to tell ma friends :D so straight people come out to :D

  • @ImBeautifullyTragicx I know right?? it's soo stupid. I mean why do I have to come out because I'm a lesbian? why do straight girls NOT have to come out? when will people finally stop assuming that everyone's straight and when will they stop thinking that being gay is being off the norm??

  • @ImBeautifullyTragicx I've had to declare i'm straight several times in my life :p I'm also sure that a bunch of people who asked didn't really believe me either >_> So, I guess the only reason for gay people to come out is because not everybody has a (working) gaydar? >_>

It's also tiresome to assume sexuality is a choice. What Ellen above describes, I can't comprehend. Maybe she's bi, I don't know. I can't even imagine being with a guy. Ever. I imagine it's the same with gay guys and women.

  • @ImBeautifullyTragicx because you should at least tell your friendwho you are. of course you don't need to world. Tho people need to know that there is gay people out there. When I told my friends I was afraid because I didn't know any other and so did they. It needs to be people's life to become usual and common.

  • @ImBeautifullyTragicx Because you came to this world by a very natural act between a MALE and a FEMALE .. being straight is natural, that's how things should be so that's why straight people don't have to come out. ( asking why is somebody straight is just like asking them why they're either a guy or a girl )

ps: I don't have absolutely nothing against gay, i accept them for who they are.. I m just answering your question

  • @florina1912 asking someone why they're gay is like asking them why they're a boy or girl as well, don't try and seperate the two, being gay is just as natural as being straight.

  • @florina1912 "Being straight is natural, that's how things should be." According to who? And whether or not people like you think it should or should not be, the fact remains some people aren't born straight. Deal with it.

  • @florina1912 i agree with you, unfortunatly many people who are pro gay take it to another level and dont understand that its not a perfect world and wanting to or not we judge people and have perceptions on who they should be and how they should act. its why men act difrently with each other then they do with women or children or people of difrent ethnicity's.

  • @florina1912 There is more than 1.300 documents homosexual behavior in very "natural" animals, homosexuality is in the nature since always ant it's natural as heterosexuality. When you say "things should be" you are showing us that you have a very heterocentric view of life and nature and not a real view of sexual behavior , gonobos are pansexual (they practice every form of sex) dolphins and penguins form homosexuals couples for life, please read a little more aboou it.

  • @florina1912 Being gay is also natural though...

  • @ImBeautifullyTragicx well said my friend thumbs up

  • Actually, time has beenn asking how to get in touch with you. lmao love u Ellen!

  • Wow that lady really needs to take a chill pill cause I know she just pissed so many people off. I would sell everything I own to have a 10 minute conversation with Ellen. That woman needs a lesson on parenting, obviously. If you don't want your kid to see something, then don't expose them to it. And if you don't want your kid to be exposed to homosexuality, don't take them out into the real world, because it happens, and like Ellen said, it's OKAY. It's ALL love and love is always okay.

  • cause baby you were born this way ;) I wanna punch that STUPID WOMAN. F**KING BITCH. Ellen is awesome. This makes me so sad. It upsets me that people have to explain themsleves, why should they have to. People can love who they want to love and that should just be accepted. I think Ellen is an amazing, funny, caring person, she is just truly lovely and why should anything else matter. Being gay does not define who you are, its just part of you and people should be proud of who they are.

  • Every kid knows that when a girl meets a boy, and they have feelings for each other it's called love. So what's wrong with when a girl meets a girl, or a boy meets a boy. There's no difference. Who you love should not matter on what sex you are <3

  • @lovelymusic92 Good for you, you can copy and paste.

  • God that lady at the end was a total a-hole to Ellen and she just took it with a smile. I love this woman. SHe is so inspiring. :)

  • I'm really impressed how Ellen handled that (ignorant) woman. Go Ellen!

  • Ellen, you are great. Everyone should be like you. Being gay is simply a characteristic, as Özpetek said.

  • cause baby you were born this way ;)

  • Actually time wanted to know how to get in touch with you :) jajajaja

  • That lady at the end of the vidoe was such a stupid bitch. She needs to be slapped in the face with a fat, black cock.

  • who was the one dumbass who disliked this interview. go fuck off. ellen. dance. laugh. conquer. <3

  • I wanna punch that STUPID WOMAN. F**KING BITCH. Ellen is awesome.

  • This makes me so sad. It upsets me that people have to explain themsleves, why should they have to. People can love who they want to love and that should just be accepted. • i thank ellen for being tha voice of gay people

  • what matters is a good heart and not a sexual leaning..as if all people have to be involved in her activities..it's her life! ridiculous

  • I would sell everything I own to have a 10 minute conversation with Ellen.

  • "Why did you feel like it was necessary to come out?"

    "Because it's okay."

  • Love u Ellen

  • Wow that lady really needs to take a chill pill cause I know she just pissed so many people off

  • That women makes no sense and has no valid points, she just shut up

  • This is horrable ... That women offending Ellen is just grose.

  • how old is Ellen here?

  • @2607musicalgal She was 39 :)

  • The points Oprah and Ellen make in this interview are just common sense for me. And I think its so important for people to understand more, to not be ignorant.

  • I love so much Ellen. I wish I could see her on tv here, in Spain ;__;

  • I LOVE ELLEN SO MUCHH.<3

  • Ellen is amazing!

The way she talks about being gay is so awesome!

    She is my rolemodel.

I am not gay, but I have so mutch respect for the gay community!

  • wow that woman at the end really needs to chill out!, Talk about anally retentive/highly strung and in need of Prozac. Yikes!

  • "because it's okay."

I smiled so big when she said that.

  • It brings tears to my eyes to see this interview. Oprah's words are really appreciated in LGTB community. Thank you Ellen and Oprah.

  • There was so much focus on it because it wasn't ok for a long time and now people are finally finding a way to be heard and that's on TV. If u don't wanna watch it, don't turn it on! Gays and lesbians have alot to proove and still today have a long way to go w society. I'm straight so it's easy for me, I can't imagine how hard it is for them. Leave them alone and just let evryone be!!!!! It's 2011, it's about time!

  • Even though I have never been against gay people, I used to think I would still be reluctant if my own child turned out to be gay. Growing up in a society where gays are percieved as strange outcasts from kindegarden to highschool, it is hard to be totally comfortable with it, no matter how much one values tolerance. But since I found out about Ellen, my viewpoint changed drastically. I understand now how much sh*t society have taught us. Gays are perfectly normal, and I wholly support them.

  • "Because it's OK." <3

  • No disrespect to the mum in the audience, but my son (14) picks up stuff all the time from the news on the telly, newspapers and if he asks a question about it, then he's ready for an answer. It's not always up to me when to tell him stuff. I can tell him stuff but everything and anything going on is a cue for discussion, even the difficult subjects, if he asks about it. Better he hears it from me as truthfully and tactfully as possible, than not asking at all.

  • There's nothing wrong with swinging from the chandeliers either.

  • I know this interview is old but I love ellen and that women needs to stop blaming ellen for her not talking about that subject with her son. For all we know her son could be gay.

  • Wow, that audience member.. Ignorance at its best.

  • We do need celebrities who are openly gay, that's how it gets easier to approach the issue.

As for children: straight kids are going to be just fine; if anything it'll help when they're older so they won't be so confused when they meet gay people. As kids, they don't know it's "wrong" yet so they don't mind.

GAY kids on the other hand: finding out about it is priceless. I grew up not knowing about it and it was such a relief when I finally learned to know gay people and realized it was okay.

  • ellen ur my hero!! <3

  • the whining woman in the end... how stupid and annoying can someone be.. seriously

  • I love how ellen responded to someone who was bashing her , with lightheartedness. It shows how calm and collected she is.

  • Well that woman at the end needs to fuck off!

  • I've never heard of Ellen before, but now I know she's a really inspirational person. Does she have a show or something? x

  • " i dont want my son to find out whaat gay is till i tell him. not on a magazine stand" lady shut up! dont blame ellen. blame the press for making a big deal out of it.

  • Great interview! I would say what I always say;. It's not about the gender, it's about love. How do people justify hating something thats about love? Blows my mind every time. LOVE YOU, ELLEN!

  • The lady is like "I'm straight!!" YES WE CAN TELL,. :D

  • To every woman glaring at her in the audience... Middle finger! Haha

  • Wuv Ellen!

  • I love Ellen so much! Rosie O' Donnell should have taken notes. You don't have to be a total bitch and an extremist when coming out. She is one of the most successful ppl right now. Many ppl love her. She's happy.

  • @AngelofAmbrosia Actually, I have great respect for Rosie O'Donnell. She is who she is and she speaks her mind.

That's who Rosie is. You're being just like 'those people' . Ellen had a different experience, and so did Rosie... there isn't "a standard" that they have to live up to.

  • Ellen: "Society has a pretty big problem with it, there are a lot of people out there who think people like me a re sick."

I've always said fuck society and be who you are and do what you want to do. Society will always have a problem with something.

  • DUDE I TOTALLY FUCKING LOVE HER SHES AWESOME

  • All i wanna say is ELLEN I LOVE YOU & THANKYOU!!!!!!!!!!

  • Ellen handled that lady like a fucking boss. What, does she honestly think that gay people should make themselves invisible so that she doesn't have to have a simple conversation with her 10 YEAR OLD son? Give me a break. A few shows start to have gay characters in them, and all of a sudden it's "shoving it down people's throats". Omg, I feel so sorry for you! You actually have to deal with gay people living their lives openly and honestly! Boo fucking hoo.

  • @CanadianQueer Hahaha agree!

  • I hope that loudmouthed lady watches this video when she's 80 and she's embarrassed.

  • @ouch2112 I hope that lady's son comes out as gay and gives her a heart attack

  • @DennistheGreat483 I do too, but then on the other hand he might be treated very poorly by his family so I hope he actually isn't gay.

  • lol Ellen owned that lady at the end :D

  • it doesnt matter if someone is gay or not, i have gay relatives, it doesnt mean that i love them any less, that woman at the end was just pathetic, Ellen is an amazing lady.

  • The moment when Oprah asked "Why was it so important for you to come out?" and Ellen replied with "Because it's okay," it the pivoting statement of this whole interview. I cried hearing her say that, and along with watching the video "It Gets Better," I've realized that you will, without a doubt, lose some people in your life if/when you tell them you're gay. But for every person you lose, there will always be double that to surround you with love and faith that you'll make it through.

  • GOD THAT WOMAN IS A BULLY,,,, SHE KNOWS NOTHING ABOUT NOTHING.. AND YOU CAN SEE HOW MUCH SHE IS UPSETTING ELLEN, THAT BULLY NEEDS TO GET HER HEAD OUT OF HER ARS*,

  • When Oprah starts asking "why did you think it was neccessary to...." my brain filled in the sentence to "keep your sexuality private", \i know they is still a lot of prejudice but I think we've come a long way, I watched an interview with Portia De Rossi and that is the way the interviewer asked that question. I hope the vilivication of the gay community continues to become more rare and archaic.

  • That woman basically just told everyone, on national television, that she is heterosexual.

  • Wow Ellen just killed her with the last sentence

  • Just imagining how hard, sad, and depressing Ellen felt while this "coming out" stuff was going on makes me want to hug her, comfort her, tell her that I'm gay too. No one has the right to criticize lesbians and say that being a lesbian is a sin. W
