Lesson #15: Modern Pentatonics Part 2-Lydian Pentatonic

This is GREAT stuff! Far down the road for the though as of now I am trying to internalize pentatonic from the root of IIm7, from the #9 of Valt, and from the relative minor of the Imaj7. Will substituting a minor pentatonic a half step below the root of a maj chord give me the same lydian penatonic as the one you are talking about here by the way?

Technically, this is known as the Insen (In Sen) Scale, derived from Japanese Shamisen Music.

A really hip idea is C In Sen superimposed over C sus b9 (second mode of Bb melodic minor).

@mibifinalist how do you sub this scale under a C sus b9 since there is no b9 in the scale. Then again, maybe your talking about playing the b9 on the upbeat of your phrase. This would give in an outside sound.

@1979saxman The dots of C In Sen are C - Db - F - G - Bb.

Db is the b2 / b9 of any C scale. So, C In Sen does have a b9.

C sus b9, voiced simply, is C - Db - F - G.

The In Sen occurs naturally in the major scale as well as the melodic minor scale. Over C sus b9, which can be seen as the phrygian chord of Ab major, or as seen here, the second mode of the Bb melodic minor scale, it is not an 'outside' sound, simply a beautiful melodic pattern hidden away in ordinary diatonic harmony.
