@lester5192 your wrong this band has come further since simone joined and is great you may just not have the ear to hear the potential or u dnt like this type of music but all the same, YOUR WRONG :)
@lester5192 So you're saying you took a look at the band's long hair and black clothing and knew it was a heavy metal band that growls? NO WAY!!! Maybe if they were gangster rappers you would've been surprised? I don't know what the point of your statement is. Oh, if anyone can write songs like this let's see you write something better.
@Splitlnfinity nah, rap metal mixed with hardcore has been done by hip hop looking people before too. tons of that shit goin round as well, where you been? lol.
and the who'll female fronted vocalist with the opera type Celtic vocal sound and super hott Gothic witchery image for her. started with evanescence.
@lester5192 Actually I'm pretty sure it started in 1997 with Nightwish but I bet someone will butt in with some obscure band that no one's heard of calling shenanigans. But I mean you see what the band looks like. Why expect anything else?
@Splitlnfinity nope, that amy lee put it on the map. i would also expect some originality in a band and another knock off, there's too many copy cat bands now.
@lester5192 'da hell? Evanescence doesn't count, it's not metal. If anything you should be arguing that this band is similar to Nightwish, not Evanescence. And it is. But Epica is anything but Gothic. The lead singer prefers a balance between operatic and discernible vocals. And where do you see the Celtic in this? It's largely power metal with huge symphonic and death metal influences.
Try listening to Fools of Damnation and Kingdom of Heaven. Those are this band's best IMHO.
@TheEarthforge anyway. so what? not every band is the same or gonna be exactly the same for another one to start a trend and another one to get some ideas. evanescence was still heavy at times. show me a top 40 band before evanescence that had female vocals like amy lee, you can not. then right when she made it tons of wannabe's started up, of course you will tell me musicians and bands don't jump on band wagons. lol.
@lester5192 Epica isn't even in the Top 40, so that is not relevant.
You miss my point. Evanescence is rock. Epica is metal. Evanescence is focused on the female vocals with straightforward riffs. Epica is focused on both female and growled vocals, which scares off most rock fans, with very complex orchestral arrangements and choppy guitar lines (another staple of death metal).
Epica was also formed in 2002, about a year before Evanescence became big. So your bandwagon argument is absurd.
@TheEarthforge like i said, no two bands are exactly alike so you pointing out every little thing is irrevelnt. and they can still get influence from another band even if they seem real different. bottom line is amy lee's style was not being used until afte she came out and got big, show me a vocalist like this before . what was epica's vocalist like in 2002? the same it is now? or did she change her style after? was she even in the band in 2002?
@lester5192 No band is alike, but different genres hold different sentiments and different appeals, so crossing genres in comparisons is a slippery slope.
Actually Simone's style didn't significantly change till the Divine Conspiracy album was released in 2007, long after Evanescence rose and fell. For reference, they had three prior albums in that duration, two with singing, and on both Simone was waaaay more operatic. But why listen to me? Check out this band yourself before badmouthing them.
@TheEarthforge i don't really care if bands copy each other as long as they have good music. and even if evenescence is on the downlow it doesn't mean amy lee's style is still not admired still.
@lester5192 One thing is clear: Epica did not copy Evanescence at all. Some people like Amy Lee. Some people don't. You're clearly also not checking out the rest of Epica. Go and listen to the rest of it. You might not like it, but find out why others like it. Be a scholar, not a bigot.
@TheEarthforge i did listen to a couple other songs. i'm not gonna listen to every video and song, it's not that important. all i know is many female singers have copied amy lee's style after she made it, her vocal style was considered new and different then for a female vocalist . of course not one of them followers will admit that. of course. they all the say they started this style or that there is no such thing as styles. lol.
@lester5192 No they did not copy her style. Simone got the idea for it from women such as Anneke van Giersbergen, Liv Kristine, and Tarja Turunen who was a big influence on Simone. She did not even know who the hell Amy Lee was.
@Viccerz nothing? you don't have an ear for music then, no two singers are gonna have the exact same voice and that's why you say nothing. lol. yeah right, their styles of singing is night and day cuz they're not the exact same. lol.
@lester5192 All I can do is laugh at your comments. You think Amy Lee was some kind of original that everyone scrambled to copy? Why do you keep referring to the "top 40"? That doesn't mean jack shit.
@D3c1m80r you're in denial and proud of it, i seen it before with people. you're one of them.
bands and their fans will NEVER admit to following a trend or to copying someone especially, ever.
we all know when amy lee became famous with bring me to life that other female singers starting doing a style similar to her with operatic singing and goth image, unless you don't follow a music scene really.
oh know artists never copy each other oh no it can never be oh no. LOL
@lester5192 Lol, now Amy Lee is a pioneer of the goth image for female vocalists? Give me a fucking break man. Amy Lee doesn't even do operatic vocals.... And if she did, she'd be ripping of Nightwish or Within Temptation who were around before anyone knew who the fuck she was. I'm not in denial, I just can see when someone is being a total asshat so I like to point it out.
@D3c1m80r i never said she was the pioneer. putting words in peoples mouth is a desperate approach when people lost a debate. amy lee didn't invent this style, a very few european ROCK bands had this going on with female vocalists in the 90's but they were unheard of cuz girls are usually into pop and r&b. only recently have some women grown some balls. but after amy lee there has been an explosion of goths opera style female singers in METALl, but not before.
@lester5192 Do your bloody research. There wasn't really an explosion. Evanescence released their first full length album and got big in 2003. This band(epica) was formed in 2002 under the name sahara dust. Nightwish released their first full album in 1997, Within Temptation released their first in 1997. Lacuna Coil released their first in 1999. After Forever released theirs in 2000. These are just a few of many metal bands around BEFORE her album. So, people are coping her? Your logic hurts.
@lester5192 HAHAHA I can name a hell of a lot of rock and metal bands from Europe that were doing that style. Let's name some of them. Nightwish, Within Temptation, Lacuna Coil, The Gathering, Doro, this next one gose way back. Girlschool that gose all the way back to 1978. But let's stay in the 90's Opera IX, Inkubus Sukkubus, Switchblade Symphony, Tristania, Theatres des Vampires, Flowing Tears, and the list keeps going.
@lester5192 Seeing as how Theatre of Tragedy and The Gathering are from Europe and were doing that shit long before evanescence. Hell Dark Tranquillity had used female vocals on some of there CD's. Women in metal music is nothing new dumb ass.
@lester5192 Wow Inkubus Sukkubus have been around scene 1989. Theatre of Tragedy started in 1993. So I'm calling bullshit on that. Inkubus Sukkubus is Gothic Rock/Pagan Rock and have had that image long before Amy Lee. Theatre of Tragedy is Gothic Metal and also had the image long before Amy Lee. Theatres des Vampires 1994.
I never really was into their stuff, but since they've gotten heavier with design your universe I started to really like them. This one, Burn to a cinder, Deconstruct and kingdom of heaven are great tracks! I hope they'll continue this road and make more songs like those!
@Tangakkai I agree. I think this happened because Isaac Delahaye replaced Ad on guitar. He's the one that does all the solos, and he comes from a heavy metal background.
Ufffff.. I just can say that after listening to the whole Nightwish's discography and to the last albums of Epica, both are the groups that are able to give me chills!!
@soraelegido Totally agree. I find Nightwish a bit softer, so I listen to that when I'm not in a face-busting, ass-kicking, zombie-killing mood. When I need something that makes me want to scream "Oorah!!" at the top of my lungs, it's Epica every time.
No doubt this is Epica reloaded with tons of metal power! I'm sure their music is one of the most epic I've ever heard and think this album honors the band's name by far. And headbangs for ludiqbg, changing from hip-hop to metal is like spiritual Initiation and enlightenment, therefore abandoning the darkness of the profane world. Well done man!
@windguide147 Yeah! But I would add scientific indoctrination too. Modern science and religion are the darkest shrouds spreaded over human understanding for the sake of the few. Contemplate the whole of Kingdom of Heaven's lyrics, but mostly this: "Quantum physics leads us to answers to the great taboos. We create the world around us. God is every living soul." There is wisdom.
@windguide147 Maybe their last album? You must have missed that they had recruited a new singer and that Tuomas had got totally insane and had started composing pop music...
@martytheshredder Tuomas, totally insane? I think the most insane here is you, to gibber such nonsense. Or are you very ignorant, or very misunderstanding of what Nightwish style is. People like you who keep hating on Anette can't just shut up once and for all? Nightwish spirit is in Tuomas' music/lyrics, and not in Tarja's voice! But I don't care the least what you think. Keep hating if you like. You're the one missing something, not me. And I'm glad that everyone's not behaving such fool.
AMEN AMEN I SAY TO YOU!!! :D you now have a deeper understanding in music! :) haha you're the first person Ive ever heard to convert from hip-hop to metal haha

Exactly! this album only came out and I already can't wait for the next one cause I'm sure it's gonna be better even though I don't know how they can do any better.

@spirkass that's why I like them the most, they never disapoint you... not like NW and WT that get worse and worse at any album...
