Gold medal is the International standard. Because in the end, winning gold is the goal. If an athlete won 8 silver medals in his/her career, but no gold. That simply means, great accomplishments, but not a champion.

By no means I will deny the fact that training life is hard, but those children as well as their families are all honored to be the next generations of champion athletics. The competition is tough since the population is high, thousands of young kids will fight for the spot of being trained by their country, those who were chosen must felt really proud, yes they didn't live a normal life, theirs are better.
I think it's wrong to take a child from their family just to teach them, like a robot, to learn how to balance on a beam or swim the length of a pool.. China may be leading, but at least the US allows their participants to lead the life of a normal young person.. I think that's what a true athlete is. A healthy person with extroardinary skill. U.S. might not get a lot of gold medals, just because China is better in sports like table tennis. U.S. is better in team sports, in which there aren't a lot of gold medals. But sports like swimming and gymnastics and athletics have like 5 times more gold medals then team sports. The individual sports from the U.S., since China is better individual wise, will get silvers and bronze medals, and sometimes gold medals. U.S. might not get all the gold medals they wanted.

I listed events that do not require strength and events where Team USA beat the crap out of Team China, especially in full contact competitions.

This is not quite the fault of the Chinese, but how do you choose a tie breaker in an OLYMPIC GOLD MEDAL FINAL that has nothing to do with the skill of the gymnasts? Because Nastia was more consistent and got more middle of the road scores while the Chinese girl got scores higher and lower than her, when they threw out the final lowest score they threw out a 9.0 for Nastia and like a 8.5 or 8.6 for the Chinese gymnast.
China should be kicking much more ass since their competitors are essentially property of the State and they have well over a billion people from which to choose. The fact that we're doing this well against a severely stacked deck (not even counting the cheating and Home Court Advantage) only proves the superority of our system.

You've only heard about the point of view of the American reporters. By no means I will deny the fact that training life is hard, but those children as well as their families are all honored to be the next generations of champion athletics. The competition is tough since the population is high, thousands of young kids will fight for the spot of being trained by their country, those who were chosen must felt really proud, yes they didn't live a normal life, theirs are better.

I think it's wrong to take a child from their family just to teach them, like a robot, to learn how to balance on a beam or swim the length of a pool.. China may be leading, but at least the US allows their participants to lead the life of a normal young person.. I think that's what a true athlete is. A healthy person with extroardinary skill. U.S. might not get a lot of gold medals, just because China is better in sports like table tennis. U.S. is better in team sports, in which there aren't a lot of gold medals. But sports like swimming and gymnastics and athletics have like 5 times more gold medals then team sports. The individual sports from the U.S., since China is better individual wise, will get silvers and bronze medals, and sometimes gold medals. U.S. might not get all the gold medals they wanted.

As a Canadian who's nation of 33 million people earned 18 medals incl 3 gold, I'm totally happy. Happy because I live in an awesome nation in the most gorgeous city in the world. I couldn't care less if we walked away with ZERO medals. US Media has been ranking by total medals for at least 35 years now. Probably longer but that is how long I have been watching and tracking the Olympics.
And before you say that they started doing it to favor the USA team, please do some research first. During the 70s and 80s, the former Soviet Union and East Germany were usually at the top not the USA. Unlike China this year, these countries lead in both total medals and golds.

Gymnastics 10 golds
weightlifting 8 golds
Diving 7 golds
Shooting 5 golds
judo 3 golds
and couple of golds in many other events
They also have 4 medal contenders in boxing where a few of those guys are world champions already. The US has only 1 medal contending boxer. The rest were eliminated easily.
Nobody is saying the Chinese are better athletes but it certainly looks like they are more well rounded.

Pacifica, my point was that you are wrong. You said that Chinese athletes are better than Americans. I just gave you many examples where when going head to head, the Americans beat the Chinese.
So we suck at badminton, table tennis, trampoline, and most shooting where Team China picked up 12 golds. You can have them.
Most people prefer full contact sports or ones that require stamina/strength. Let's add those up at the end. The greeks admired physical strength not hitting a birdie.

Hang on Pacifica, let me share one of my favorite Shooting examples.
Men's Double Trap. Hu Binyuan of China, was a favorite to win. Sorry Hu, Walter Eller beat you. Walter had an outstanding final and set an Olympic record in his grabbing of the gold. Hu won the bronze.
Nastia won the women's all-around in gymnastics. Yiln Yang of China won the bronze.
Then Shawn won the balance beam with an outstanding performance. China 3rd.
There are more example of non-medal wins.

Men's Water Polo (8-4), Women's Water Polo (12-11), Swimming - you know our dominance there. I do not feel like typing in all the examples.
How about Shooting, a strong area for China? Hm, Vincent Hancock won skeet shooting. Qu Ridong came in 6th place. Vincent set an Olympic record.
Rapid Fire Pistol final - Keith Anderson came in 5th place. No chinese athletes made it to the finals.

The other day when the Chinese girl got a medal and pushed Alicia Sacrimone out of the medals for vaulting I was furious. The Chinese girl fell! Fell on her face!!! It left Alicia out of the medals in fourth place. And this after all of her heartbreak? It made me go on a rant like I have never gone on before. I started making death threats at the TV screen. The Chinese need to stop getting preferential treatment just because this is their moment to 'become a superpower'.

This is not quite the fault of the Chinese, but how do you choose a tie breaker in an OLYMPIC GOLD MEDAL FINAL that has nothing to do with the skill of the gymnasts? Because Nastia was more consistent and got more middle of the road scores while the Chinese girl got scores higher and lower than her, when they threw out the final lowest score they threw out a 9.0 for Nastia and like a 8.5 or 8.6 for the Chinese gymnast.

Medal Count - As of 8/20, Great Britain is in 4th place, with a total medal count of 37.
Cycling - Completely dominated this event.
Rebecca Adlington - Won 400M freestyle giving Britain its first swimming gold in 20 years. Then won a second gold in the 800M freestyle breaking a 19-year old world record.

Some people hear have suggested that I am a "China hater." That is not true. I have throughly enjoyed this Olympics and contribute much of its success to the Chinese people.
I have never criticized the Chinese people nor the athletes. I was simply doing what I have done since 1972, the first Olympics I ever watched, giving praise to Team USA.

Well, as of 8/18, my gold prediction was way off. I forgot that China still had events like table tennis, badminton and trampoline left.
Anyway, with 4 days left, I am predicting a USA surge in gold medals and a one point deficit between US and China. If the USA surge continues, result will be USA 47, China 46.
But then again, I could be wrong. China has two major events left that are judge based, rhythmic gymnastics and boxing. Those could be enough to get China 48 golds.

not only that but they get gold medals in badminton, ping pong, which aren't exactly great ways to get them. plus, nastia liuken (pardon my selling if I'm wrong) got cheated as well as shawn jhonson in the vault finals and liuken got cheated in the uneven bars. The tie breaker thingy was a total gas.

tsk tsk tsk... so much hostility in here. hey, get off here and get laid... it's interesting that they doin what hitler hoped to do n only through doping up his athletes. Regardless of how you look at it, it admirable. And don't act like some parents here in the us don't attempt the same as far as training em goes. I pity the kids though.
